    The Brienzergrat is always a brilliant experience. As a skyrunner, I enjoy both the challenging trails and the unique view. Here are a few tips for all those who dare to take on the challenge: - you need a very good physical condition - take at least 4 liters of water with you - the way from the Brienzer-Rothorn to the Harder is easier than the reverse route - do not go on the route on rainy days or when it has been raining the days before - ask about the exit variants - look for a guide if you are inexperienced - enjoy it!

  • @Matti6950

    @Matti6950

    Жыл бұрын

    @@WanderwithXander From everything i read, September is a status quo in weather of august, especially with recent climate change, only oktober is way more risky (and shorter days). Plus september has advantage of just being out of the 'high' season. If it rains, the dry process is way faster in september, then say June and maybe even july, cause the warm summer already dried out excess water. Tons of google 360° 'no clouds', dry condition pictures are taken in September (on google) of the ridge, movies as well, this gives me confidence.

    I literally just finished this hike 2 days ago from Brienz to Harder Kulm. Spent the night at Brienz Rothorn hotel. Nothing, not even this video, can really prepare you for what's to come lol it was the most physically demanding thing I've ever done, and mentally it pushed me beyond my limit. Would you say that Tannhorn was the 'biggest challenge', (top with cross, near start, 2200 meter (second highest)? I'm thinking of skipping that part, but including the whole interlaken - Allgauwgoren (one way or the other), and then stop (go down to lombachalp). The part like Suggiture and Harder Kulm seem very doable? ofc steep but so is any mountain to be honest, and the paths seems very chill. Correct me if i'm wrong.

    We did it about 10 years ago and needed from Brienzerrothorn to the Harder 12 1/2 hours. If you go a second time then start at the Brünigpass and walk to the summit of the Brienzerrothorn. Then spend the night in the hotel on the summit. That enable a very early start next morning for the ridge. 👍

The first section is already awesome yet I would still rate it as T3 (the whole ridge is categorised white blue white, means T4+, I think they give a T4), after that exit till Tannhorn it becomes really T4

    Just watched your other video, where you succeeded in hiking the whole trail, but started from Interlaken. Do you have a preference as to which way to do the hike - Interlaken to Brienz, or Brienz to Interlaken?

  • @WanderwithXander

    @WanderwithXander

    2 жыл бұрын

    I would say, maybe start at Brienz. Because thats the highest point, so you're more or less descending in between the climbs. But the hike to the brienzer rothorn is quite a lot higher. The train goes too late. So either you're fit enough to hike it up yourself, just as a warm up, or take a train the day before and sleep there! So starting at Interlaken starts a bit less intense but then you still have to climb more during the whole hike!

    Did it in 2020, Brünigpass to Harder Kulm in about 12 hours, 3.4k elevation, arrived with the first train from Zurich. I am not a skyrunner, just a hiker. In general not difficult, about two or three exposed places. Ridge to Morgenberghorn (Leissiggrat) is much sharper and breaks apart under your feet. Last 10 km are boring, but going down straight from Augstmatthorn is also painful. You can refill water at Rothorn, I think I had 2 liters. If I would repeat, I would do only the part between Augstmatthorn and Rothorn.

    25km mountain hike in one day? That's rough!! Absolutely looks incredible!!! Well done!! I do have to say, seeing how anxious you got getting on your knees, that you might have overestimated yourself, or underestimated the route. In German they call this "trittsicherheit", and it is very important to understand one's limit for the sake of safety. Perhaps I am being a bit harsh, but I think you really shouldn't be on a route like this.

    Am I right that the Tannhorn (and the one before, briefenhornli?) are by far the most dangerous (and scaring part), and if skipped, would make the walk a lot easier (both on mind and feet, and timing schedule? After watching 12+ video's, 2000+ images, maps, google 360°c, my conclusion so far is to drive to Lombachalp, rise to Augstmatthorn (the easiest, and still beautiful, thus most must see top), by first going Suggiture, then doing the 7 tops to Allgauwhoren (Gummhorn, blazenhubel, Schnrirenhornli, Algauw licki, Allgauwhoren), then there is a path down from there, long but easy walk to lombahalp, drive back done :D In perfect world, Harder Kulm + forest walk would be included, but in case we dont make it, would be risky + the forest removes some sight (i take camera with me, to take top quality landscape images, so those top views are my priority). Between Harder Kulm to Allgauwhoren (just before Tannhorn), the ridges seem most of time safe (either 1.5-3 meter wide, or one side that is way less steep, with grass, that should prevent sliding down all way if dry. Since i'm staying 14 days at Brienz, i can just do the Rothorn another day, and perhaps even skip Tannhorn and enjoy view like Planalp, maybe even walk to top and go down. Harder Kulm (maybe even from Interlaken walking all the way), would also be nice hike. Also @ Wander with Xander, did your feet ever slip on a dangerous part (Tannhorn especially)?

    You're acrophobic, it's not just fear. Your motor functions and balance are impaired, it's not just a feeling, you are literally more likely to fall and die. I'm glad you survived the experience but you should take it seriously and realise that it's not just a matter of getting over the fear. There are ways of overcoming it, at least to an an extent, through exposure therapy in a safe environment.

    Your friend should NEVER have taken you on that hike, as you are not accustomed to the steep drop-offs and hights, nor to this level of alpine hiking combined with climbing on fairly exposed trails (and I'm wondering if he is - as he clearly could not properly assess the personal abilities versus the requirements of the trail), IMHO. This is the kind of understimation of the alps ond overestimation of one''s abilities that can land you on the title page of the boulevard press very quickly if you slip and fall (and many DO land there - almost every weekend!). Just this weekend it was two inexperienced and inadequately dressed, young ladies freezing to death on the Monte Rosa in a "sudden" snow storm... It's good you decended once you realized the time plan was shot and did not try to push through to the end. Glad you made it. Just 2 weeks ago I was witness to a person falling 30 meters off an exposed part of a mountain side, splitting his skull on the rocks and dying at the scene a few minutes later. It is SO much better to use that brain for researching the skills required for an alpine hike BEFORE going there!

    Agree with you, many people underestimate it because it is only "2000m" ...yet it's white blue white (for very good reason), I think it's T4 to be precise, and personally I think it is a very tough T4, mostly exposed on both sides, narrow top, good "chance" to slip on the grass...compared to bettmergrat (also T4) for example I think the brienzer gratweg is more difficult

    @Wander with Xander Yep! I have walked a little bit of the Hardergrat when I was a teenager, and because of my fear of heights, my body just shuts down and I can't go on. I backtracked and said never again 😅

    Haha then this hike might not have been the best for you, I can imagine you turning back! Are you trying again or are you more into other hikes now?

    @@WanderwithXander I just avoid ridges like that. Just completed the Rothaarsteig in Germany, very nice trail. Haven’t hiked in Switzerland for ages, would love to go back.

    First time ever I had to stop watching a video. Just too scary. It's madness. One tiny slip or movement of stone and it's all over. Just not worth it in my opinion especially when there are hundreds of safe walks with great views. But well done

    Thats why we stopped half way as well, we got a bit more than we bargained for... Thanks for watching though, I went back in 2021 and was better prepared! Judging by your profile photo I see you hiked the TMB as well? Thanks for watching the vids!

    The music distances the viewer from the experience. The exact opposite of what you intend I expect
