    The Hex has to be one of the best feeling, straightest flying midranges in my bag. Can hold the torque of a forehand and that's a must for me.

    Good point. One of the big factors that has made me switch to the Hex is that it is able to handle my forehand a bit better when I get off torque with out it being an overstable disc as well as it just being a great feeling disc when I throw backhand.

    I love midranges with more glide (such as 6 like a warship), it feels easier to throw with less power while still achieving the distance and accuracy. Also, the midranges that have a turn rating of 0 are easier to throw more consistently without turning them over because with slower discs it is sometimes too easy for more beginner players to throw it too powerfully and the disc turns over and flies super right.

    Can you explain throwing with too much power and going right? I assume you mean that with RHBH players? This seems to be an issue I have, and would really appreciate a solution to correcting it, if you have one

  • @Mark-wg8yj

    @Mark-wg8yj

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@meb212 i assume you are using discs that have flight numbers. Ill take the buzzz for an example. Its a 5 speed. Now when i throw a 5 speed disc like a driver it will act understable. It will do that because you put too much speed on it. A midrange will fly a long way when you put less speed on it. Throwing mids you should cocentrate more on the spin the disc gets and the angle, not as much on the power. Just try throwing it with different power and you will see results. Another way is throwing it max power and hyzer flipping it. Search that on youtube

  • @MaxLBogue

    @MaxLBogue

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@meb212 The faster the disc moves, the more it wants to tilt into its spin and turn. Throwing a flippy disc on a flat line will bring out the turn it has, but it's often too intense to hold the line for very long in the air, and you'll turn and burn into the ground. To fix this, start the disc out with the outer rim angled slightly downwards as you release (for RHBH, the left side of the disc would be lower than the right side). This is called a Hyzer release. The disc will naturally flatten out if the angle you chose was right for the amount of turn it has. This is called a hyzer flip. Some shots call for a hyzer flip, others prefer a reliable, neutral disc thrown flat. Hyzer flips can be used to precisely tune the line of a shot, and discs can even turn over and glide right for a portion of the flight to achieve maximum distance even on a hyzer release. Each disc will acquire at least a small amount of turn over time as it gains more scratches and dents, but depending on the mold, beating it in can drastically change the flight properties, so the hyzer flip is a really important tool regardless of your arm speed or which molds you use.

    The Emac Truth is my go-to mid. I bought one just to try it out and having never held one prior, it's just perfect. The concave rim on the warship is uncomfortable, the rounded rim on the mako3 makes me lose confidence in my grip. The buzz is too shallow, the warship is too deep. The Emac just balances itself in between everything, and it's flight is perfectly predictable. Design one like that, but maybe with some softer edges like MVPs reactor or hex.

    Axiom Hex has been my favorite mid since it came out. I'd love something very similar in terms of diameter and profile, as the flatness of the Hex makes it comfortable for sidearm as well. But if possible, I'd love your disc to be slightly more understable. That might already happen by just not having a GYRO rim, but anyway I think that's the kind of disc we don't have on the market. Dead straight (also with slightly lower armspeed), flat top, yet still glidy. I know that's a difficuly combination but I think the Hex is the closest thing we have right now.

    For my mids I use a Buzzz when I want that predictable left finish, my Mako (I have the original one and the 3, but throw the old one more) when I want it to basically fly straight all the way to the ground, and my Tursas when I want a right turn on a backhand throw. It is nice to have varying stabilities but if I had to pick just one, it would probably be the Mako. Personally I don't want a bead on a mid because I'm going to grip it like a driver instead of like a putter. I do like the taller/thicker rims, but also like the rounded edges it will be interesting to see what you end up testing!

    I love mid ranges. I bag way to many. Ahhh here we go: Z Sol - the under-stable queen. Heyzer to turnover glides and finishes smoothly right. Z Buzz SS - Anhyzer boms will hold the anny and not fade where I wouldn’t throw the sol because it would turn into a roller or dump. Champion Shark 3 - was a super straight flier till it beat it, super glidy will S curve beautifully and get good distance. My straightest hyzer to flat disc with a straight finish. Buzzz - Similar to my Shark, will hold any line you put it on but can flip up like the shark, tbh I’ll throw this when I don’t want to loose my shark LOL Kc Pro roc - supposedly over stable, but not really. I feel like Innova mids are less stable than what the numbers say. Will still try to flip up, straight flier with a more aggressive finish. Champion roc 3 - will glide farther than my kc pro roc, very minor turn when released flat. Good glide, good distance reliable fade. Z Buzzz OS x2 - two of these in my bag one more beat in than the other but I LOVE THIS DISC. Crank it as hard as you want, this will hold the heyzer, won’t flip to flat. Super predictable, great flying disc. Discmania Mutant - basically a tilt midrange. Super over stable, dumps extremely hard. Buzzz OS takes care of everything but in case I need something that just hooks and dumps left fast. This is it. And a zone because who wouldn’t bag a zone. Putters - P2 x3 throwing putter is a Link x2 FD I have like 4, DD I have two 😅.

    cool video, dude! Love your stuff! Looking forward to seeing your discs! As for straight-flying midranges, I prefer something with a shallow depth and with a top that is on the flat side (but a little dome is okay too). But I don't know if that affects the flight. I REALLY am always needing a disc that flies super straight with almost no fade.

    I got into the midrange game about a year ago and have tried a fair number (Mako3, Buzzz, Shark, Roc, Pathfinder) and when I threw the Hex I was blown away by how easily it came out of my hand. Now I notice what I hadn't before in the others-some sort of hang, hitch, scrape, something during release. The Hex just disappears from hand. I will say that all of these midranges have flown super straight for me, so as far as how they fly-they all go beautifully. But the Hex is the nicest to throw. The only thing I would change is make the outside plastic super durable because it hurts me every time I hit a tree with the thing. Also, as a designer I really appreciate the graphic design of the ThoughtSpace discs-I want every one of them.

    I am primarily an Innova thrower. The Roc3 is my favorite feeling disc and the feel alone gives me the most confidence in my throw, and the consistency I get from that is amazing. I also have the mako3 and I love its straight flight and I can even use it for shots that fade right. The only problem with the mako is that, at least on mine, the rim ends In a sharp edge that isn't too comfortable. If you can somehow blend the depth, bead, and overall feel of the roc3 with the roundness, dome, and straightness of the mako3 you got yourself a disc that's going directly in my bag.

    When judging a midrange, the primary factor I look at is stability. As an NC woods golfer, I am a huge fan of understable midranges that I can release cleanly and work angles with. Personally, I have never been a huge fan of buzzzes or truths since, due to their finish, they require much more height control--whereas with an understable mid I can throw it high and let it ride straight. Rim depth in the 1.3-1.4cm range seems to offer the most control when coupled with a thinner rim width of ~1.2cm. For reference, after trying most midranges on the market, I use a champion mako3 as my staple. This is an awesome idea, can't wait to see what comes out of it even if it's nowhere close to my ideas!!

    I also recently fell for the Axiom Hex and the thing that stands out for me is that the rounded but tapered wing shape fills my hand in the most comfortable way I have felt from a disc without simply being a round blob like the Mako3. No bead, medium diameter, and especially no flashing or sharp edges like you see a lot with Prodigy. I think making something that is on the straighter side out of the mold would be better than something that naturally pushes an understable line to avoid it breaking in badly with consistent use. If you could combine the feel and shot-shaping flight of a Hex with the distance that a Westside Warship can push, you would have something a cut above the rest.

    Bit late here, love the hex myself. I threw a Mako3 when I first started out but it beat in to hella understable. I'm also a big fan of the RPM Piwakawaka, straight to understable flight, low profile, everything I want in a mid range that I can power it and get it to go right (at least when it's beat in, I find RPM starts out more stable than numbers suggest). Anyways I like low profile/flatter discs they fit my smaller hands better.

    Hands down my favorite mid is an md3. The musts for me when choosing a mid are: flat top, mild shoulder, flexible flight plate, and a 1.4 rim. If it's going to double duty as a forehand disc, smaller diameter is a huge bonus. Give me a small diameter md3 and it goes in the bag immediately.

    Durability is a major part of how I pick my midranges. Typically they're thrown in smaller fairways or where touch/shape is needed. This means lots of trees and turns after the stability starts to fade out. That's why I love the svea. It doesn't have so much turn that it can't be compensated to stay straight, and having no fade makes it extremely predictable. The power level is very familiar for almost every midrange.... but the #1 factor that nobody really brings to light with midrange discs, is glide. The Svea is an extreme glide midrange. Very rarely do you see a disc with higher glide rating that it's speed without any fade. This produces flat, stable flight that you can predict, and shape to do what you need it to. It's the ultimate disc to use for any shot. If there was a disc you'd need to try and copy, it's the Svea.

    I have pretty dry hands, so more of a base plastic grip helps with control a lot. I usually fan grip mids and the slicker premium plastics sometimes slip out early. My go-to is DX Roc which has great grip and feel for me, and a good stable/straight flight. I generally throw backhand and like the bead for that and don't mind some dome.

    Mostly flat top, medium depth & fade. Flight numbers 5/5/0/1 are ideal because thrown hard it will go straight without turning over but still have enough fade to come back at the end. The Compass, Chariot & even the Emac Truth all fit this really well to me! I’ve throw all of these for fairly hard left turns, flex lines, straight flights & even turnovers that will go right then straighten out. I think if you get something in that area you will be looking at a solid disc!! Keep up the good work!

    Take three of my favorite mids from that stack that all have distinct features I like (Ex. Flat top, shallow rim, rounded edge) and do some mixing of those features to create 3 new mid designs. Then Print out just the edge (similar to the flight towel pieces) to test the feel and tweak it. After I get three I like the feel of I would prototype the full disc to test flight then tweak dimensions from there to adjust stability and flight. Then just keep narrowing down until you get the perfect design!

    I bag 3 of those: mako3, buzzz, and M model s. They all are a little different, but the mako3 is the one that is straight and holds any angle (sometimes to a fault). That said, my perfect straight mid would be shallow with a wide rim (like 10cm rim) but flies like a mako3. Probably not physically doable, but I feel like deep mods are harder to aim and control, so something like a Leopard in the hand that flies like a mako3. Love your vids. Thanks.

    My first mid was a warship and it’s still the one I reach for the most (with a Z buzzz a close second). Interestingly I have two warships, one in VIP and one in the softer Origio burst and the two different plastics have different glide ratings (6 on the VIP and 5 on the Origio). If you could get something like the hex with more weight outside near the rim, but shallow like the mako 3 somehow that would be awesome! Something like 5 5 -0.5 1 would be the best.

    Great video! I like the DGA Rift, or a Buzzz, but if I were designing a mid, I would try to get a straight finish on a straight shot. I'm still a very new player and I really put a value on straight flying discs from the start. I prefer no bead but I don't think that's an important element when throwing with a power grip. I wouldn't want it flat, but if it has too much dome I feel like it would be more susceptible to the wind. For depth, I say the deeper the better, but it might be interesting to have two versions that vary the depth like Innova does with its 3 series discs.

Innova's vtech design really helps to keep that high speed turn under control, making a disc fly very straight with plenty of torque resistance. So my vote, a mako3 mold but with a v-tech rim.
