Four things of note about Sokka's boomerang: 1. It almost never hit what he aimed it at on the initial throw. 2. That boomerang always returned, regardless of how it left his possession. 3. He paired the boomerang with a warclub, and later a sword, so it wasn't his only weapon. 4. If the boomerang didn't seem to dissappear into the void, it would return to hit the original target when they least expected it (usually in the back of the head).

Exactly! This is the weapon Sokka trained with, without doubt. It's far harder to use than any other ranged weapon (as demonstrated here), but its unique design allows for shots that would be completely impossible with any other weapon (think Sparky Sparky Boom Man, defeated by abusing the unique trajectory demonstrated here and in the actual show). Turns out, Sokka is a lot more skilled than he gets credit for.

In addition Sokka does use the boomerang as a Melee weapon, in conjunction with said warclub or sword. The boomerang is used as a defensive tool in those instances, used to hook a limb that was used for bending or other weapons and pulling or pushing them.

True. Sokka also never threw the boomerang straight forward, always slightly to the side because it curves. Even better, he changes and adjusts his throwing angle depends on the situation. Mythbusters tested the insult of "You're throwing like a girl". They found the differences between men and women is that men tend to throw faster, stronger and throw horizontally by nature, while women are more accurate and throw vertically by nature. The difference in throwing angle blurs with experience (baseball player experience), but the results are the same. These results can apply to throwing weapons it seems.

Sokka's boomerang would've been made out of whale bone as the hardest and most durable material available to Southern Water Tribe. Because of ethical reasons I don't think trying to replicate the material would be a good idea, but either cow/elk shoulder blade bones (scapula) or whitetail deer antler sheds would be good replacement materials, within a reasonable budget. They'd also be much heavier than plywood props and more consistent in performance.

They were used to hunt birds by frightening them and driving the birds into nets, or causing them to flee from brush where they could be killed with other weapons. Ironically, the returning boomerang is actually easier to make than the straight variety, which is probably why they were independently developed by so many different cultures around the world. Making a throwing stick that can fly perfectly straight and accurately is very hard.

I’m an American who’s never been anywhere near Australia but I have thrown boomerangs. I bought two of them at an antique store cheap figuring they were the equivalent of wallhangers. One day I decided to try throwing them. One turned out to be the kind that returns, the other not. I could get within five feet of a target at fifty yards but couldn’t actually hit anything. Both were airfoils. A few weeks later the second one fell off its wall mount and my dog chewed on the skinnier end a bit. A little while after that a friend and I took them out to throw them and the chewed on one was suddenly way more accurate. My guess is that the weight distribution was off until my dog “fixed” it for me. My point is that for all of throwing sticks being tools of “primitive” cultures, they are actually very sophisticated and require practice and skill to use effectively. I don’t know how much real time got compressed into this video but you guys definitely should practice more, and study up on how to make and tune them. We’re hoping for a followup with a properly made set that really work, even for Nate. 😅

Nah, you don't need one that goes straight, you just need to figure out exactly how to throw it to get every variation of curving in flight with it. Also, the variations in how they fly differs between every one, usually even if they appear identical, because even the slightest aerodynamic change completely changes its flight characteristics. When you have learned how to throw a boomerang so that it goes almost straight ahead, then curves up into a upside down U-shape and then back towards you, that's when you should have figured it out enough to start hitting things with it.

Sokka's boomerang works purely because Sokka is, believe it or not, the true god of the avatar setting. In fact, Sokka is the god of boomerangs specifically. In the old lore, Sokka divine form is that of a boomerang and there exists a story of his divine form passing in front of the moon, which lead to the goddess of the moon falling for him. This story is also believed, according to some old scrolls in Wan Shi Tong's library, to be the reason for why full moons are so common.

Ah, Shad doesn't know the low pressure-high pressure thing is a myth. Wings work mostly thanks to laminar air flow near the top surface being directed downwards at the back of the wing, creating lift. You can see this effect when an aircraft is flying through a cloud. In essence, a wing redirects some of the horizontally travelling air downwards because air tends to stick to moving surfaces for complicated reasons. Hence why the wing loses lift if that laminar boundary layer detaches from the wing surface at high angles of attack, that's what a stall is, and why turbulence is bad, because it disrupts laminar flow. There are more details to it, but that's the gist. The pressure explanation doesn't make sense because air doesn't have to "arrive" at the back simultaneously, and it doesn't work for inverted flight.

@@Peak_Aussieman The Witch-King's Flail (it's not a mace) isn't practical. It wouldn't work in real life. And we have video proof of this in the behind-the-scenes for Return of The King. The stunt man who played The Witch-King (I think it was Sala, but don't quote me on that) mentioned that the Witch-King's Flail was so big and heavy that it was truly unwieldy and that he could barely give Peter Jackson what he was looking for in the fight scene against Eowyn. I mean you can see, in the movie, just how heavy and unwieldy it was. The Witch-King swung it very slowly, not for dramatic effect, but because the guy in the suit couldn't physically swing it any faster or smoother. Also, Peter Jackson kept telling WETA to make the flail bigger. They told Peter that if they made it that big, it wouldn't be realistic. Peter's response? "It's the Witch-King of Angmar. I'm not looking for realistic. I'm looking for intimidating." Peter understood that the only reason it works for The Witch-King is because he's The Witch-King. He's got Dark Magic Enhanced Super Strength. And because you're dealing with "magic," you can go ridiculous for the intimidation factor because the "magic" in the story will make it believable. If you shrunk it to a realistic size, again, it would just be a standard flail so... yeah it works great, as history has shown us. But full Witch-King size and weight? Not a chance in Hell... as history has shown us. Do I believe the Witch-King of Angmar could swing that thing with one hand with enough speed and smoothness that I wouldn't be able to dodge it? Absolutely. Do I believe a normal human could do that? Absolutely Not. Sauron's Mace, on the other hand... well... if you could lift it, yeah it would work. It's a big metal spiked stick. Why wouldn't it work? The problem, of course, is that Sauron was, like, 15 feet tall or some ridiculous height so his mace, realistically, wouldn't be able to be lifted my a normal man. Also, Sauron augmented his own strength with The One Ring. That's how he was able to one-hand that sucker. Thing is, you COULD probably make a 1:1 replica of Sauron's Mace out of a far lighter material (Sauron's Mace was made of metal, as a mace, generally, is made of) and I think it would work just as well. A stick is a stick, regardless of the material it is made of.

16:30 I'm thinking, Shad and Tyranth having competition like usual is fun, but man I wanna see Nate get in on this. Seconds later my man delivers with some fire. Fuckin' love Nate dude. Edit: Nate going onto the range like "you won't hit me, YOU WON'T" Is such a badass move, then he tears them both apart verbally while staying humble. Holy hell, god damn I love Nate. He is the balance we need.

Tod from "Tod's Workshop" made a few videos about throwing weapons. Distance was about 40m for pilum and 100m for plumbata. And that was a professional javelin thrower. Its nice to see that boomerang, even being much less dangerous, can keep up.

Id like to see you guys test some forward curved swords. We always hear about straight vs curved and the pro's and con's of both but most don't talk about forward curved blades like the ginunting sword or kukri blades.

@@shadiversityThe reverse edged katana was interesting, but I would like to see a weapon that is designed to have a forward curved blade. Rather than a ceremonial or fantasy weapon. Also thank you for replying.

@@J-AngelShifter Ditto. It would be interesting to see a study of the pros and cons of forward, curving blades. Does it bite better? Is it better for grabbing and pulling the target while cutting?

@@captainnoob4 I think so but its been awhile. I tried looking up videos like that one but there are so few videos about forward curved swords it's kind of sad.

I havent rewatched ATLA's for quite a while. But what i can remember, Sokka's boomerang is the only attack that clearly connects and gives a critical strike to the combustion man. One of the strongest foe in ATLA history that the whole GAang struggle to fight
