We Take The Base Taycan Cross Turismo 4 Into The Mountains To See If It’s The One To Buy!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Kyle and Lexie head up in the hills with the 2021 Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo and take it on a spirited drive. Their goal is to see if the entry-level model is worth going for and saving some coin over the higher spec models where pricing can get out of hand very quickly.

It seems to me that the Taycan 4 CT does pretty much everything nearly as well as the Turbo we had in Europe. The suspension / braking options made more of a difference in everyday driving than the acceleration boost. Would you pony up the extra $ to spec a 4S or higher trim? Or just go with the nearly perfect base car with good suspension options, and forego the insane acceleration.

I would get the 4, upgrade the wheels. More power wont likely get used and the $$$ difference isn't worth it. Since it's a daily driver this will do more than almost any other car. Plus you get the option to drive it like a sports car at times. I look at this like the Audi A4 Allroad versus the RS6. I daily drive the Allroad and with APR tune its a perfect daily. Plus I get 35mpg on highway and in dynamic mode I can drive backroads very spirited.

This is really the dilemma. Especially in the CT range since they all come with the other base goodies like the bigger battery, all wheel drive and air suspension. I know when I was building my CT4 I was dancing around the 4S model but ultimately couldn't justify the silly cost increase for straight line performance. Like you I've had a performance model S, and after the initial novelty, you really just want a solid daily with the right creature comforts. Plus, the CT4 in the end is still no slouch.

I think we are going nuts, 5¨ 0 to 60 is not fast??? Do you really need 1,9¨0 to 60? I'm not in a hurry, I just want transportation and having a good time and this thing delivers both at a reasonable price.

I agree. The ridiculous 0-60 times are unnecessary. Our Audi Q5 diesel feels quick to me and it's 0-60 time is 6.4 seconds. You dont need anything quicker than 5 seconds unless you are racing your car for youtube views. What I really want if we are talking speed and power, is the ability to pass someone on the interstate. That 40-80 mph burst is more important to me. That's what gets you out of dangerous situations.

Maybe I drive a bit hard then, I would feel it instantly, and at least in 10-20% of my everyday driving. If I have an acceleration to do, I let all of those sweet horses out. And they do enjoy themselves. An believe me it's far from just straight line, and traffic light battles. It's just so much more agile when you got all that power readily available. I would not buy anything below 4S. But at the same time turbo S is not worth all that extra money over the Turbo. Both have the same amount of HP while driving, and you cannot tell the difference without launching them. But from the base to the turbo there's a huge gap, and you feel that extra power all the time. But if you're in "driving ms. Daisy" mode, and try to not spill any coffee from a full cup of coffee with no lid on, then sure. They feel 99% the same.

Even without all these expensive gadgets, a base Taycan model still is lightyears better to drive than an akward looking Model 3 or Y! It steers, drives and brakes like a true Porsche, even without rear wheel steering. By the way: the current "Cannonball EV record holder" is the Taycan 4S, which shows that even in the USA, where Tesla still has an advantage with much more Superchargers, the Porsche Taycan is as good or even quicker as the Tesla models at a long distances. With Porsche 800 volt charging technology and up to 270 kW of charging power, the Taycan models are unbeatable when it comes to DC fastcharging. Here in Germany, it's absolutely no disadvantage at all, that you can't use Tesla Superchargers as a Porsche customer. The DC charging networks here in Germany are growing fast and every DC fast charger has quicker charging times than the fastest Tesla Supercharger. In my eyes charging another 100 kilometers of range in just 5 minutes charging time with the Taycan 4 is more important, than having more range capability with a Tesla. Which 99% of EV customers won't need at all for their daily driving. Porsche Taycan charging technology at the end is faster, even at longer distances! Therefore charging the Porsche Taycan regularly at DC fast chargers won't be the most important thing for 99% of its customers too, who will charge their Porsche Taycan at the wallbox charger at home in the garage, over night and every day, with a maximum charging time from 0-100% in just 4.5 hours with the optional Porsche 22 kW wallbox.

I know you've repeatedly stated it, but when spec'ing a CT for order, I was really surprised at the $$$ difference between the CT, CT4S, Turbo, and S. Of course I'd love a Turbo, and I could, in theory, afford it. There's a 991.1 Turbo S in the garage. But a nicely equipped CT is actually $125k, a 4S $150k, a Turbo $185k, and the Turbo S $209k. 95% of the configuration is exactly the same except the acceleration, slightly the range, and whether the fender flares are gloss or matte. It's REALLY hard to justify $35k for the extra acceleration and glossy flares of the Turbo. I couldn't.

I think it boils down to one thing. People who really don't care that much about acceleration, and people who do. Biggest reason to get a Porsche should always be epic handling performance. So for that reason you should always get the driving bits first. And even though the Taycan is pretty sharp to begin with, I think it's such a better drivers car with PDCC. So I would get that even on a 4 I think. Now, I am one of those into acceleration, so I would neven settle in with a base model Taycan. That would feel way too slow for what I'm used to, and expect from my car. I would need a few years to get used to a car with 0-60 in about 5 seconds. I know that's fast in 2010-2015 terms, but you got to remember that it's for the most part all about the G-forces and not the time it takes to get up to speed, and ICE cars that are doing 0-60 in 5 seconds will feel far quicker, because they will pull a lot harder when they pull. EVs pull in a very linear way. So for people into acceleration the CT 4 will not be suffisient. For people not into acceleration, it will be more than capable of what they need it to be. Overtaking should be no problem. And it will probable be faster than what they used to drive.

"Which vehicle feels faster"... Really, this is getting more and more irrelevant and ridiculous, buddy! First of all, a Tesla isn't a "race car" at all, and reaching your country speed limit in under 4 seconds feels kind of irrelevant to me. Much more important for all these fucking heavy EVs is having driving capabilities despite all this weight. Which the Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo certainly has, because it's a Porsche! It drives, steers and brakes like a Porsche, whereas Teslas are just like batteries on wheels, with just one-trick-pony acceleration capability (until overheating the battery after only short Autobahn runs, like here in Germany...), paired with the shittiest build quality in the industry... @@maxmensch8910 Exactly! All these acceleration fetish blah blah has to stop! Because much more important for an EV are NVH capabilities for example. For my taste, an EV has to be almost silent inside, like the Mercedes EQS for example. This EV needs 3.5 seconds from 0-100 km/h, which is still crazy fast ("but theTesla Model S is much quicker bla bla blah..."), but all the other things are more important in this car, like its steering, the noise insulation, materials, build quality. Even the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT have a dead silent noise level in the interior and a fantastic build quality. Teslas must be ashamed, compared to the quality level of these German competitor EVs. Also driving capabilities of EVs, due to a very low center of gravity, are much more important for me, than all this stupid 0-60 mph acceleration bullshit, which can get even boring very quickly. Therefore Tesla models are absolutely boring, at least for my taste, because they have just this one trick pony character but nothing more.

I do really like the Cross Turismo and have spent way too many hours on the configurator trying to determine the minimum spec I could deal with. For the price, it does seem like the 4 should offer the same power/acceleration as the 4S currently does. It also bugs me that for such a long and wide car, the interior room (both passenger and cargo capacity) is slightly worse than some compact crossovers. And to both of those points, I am really curious to see the pricing and specs on the Macan EV when its released. I can't see the "S" version of that being slower than this car, and I can't imagine that it'll have a starting price too far above the current gas version. If it has the same fast charging as this, with likely more range I think it will be hard to justify the CT4 just to get slightly better handling. Makes me wonder if the facelift version of this car will be upgraded in terms of range/performance to give it some breathing room with the Macan EV. TL;DR I think it's worth waiting for the Macan EV and then deciding which to buy.

I have a Macan and have owned a Sport Turismo. I prefer the wagon style to the "crossover SUV" style of the Macan but prefer more ground clearance than the ST provides; for me, the CT4 is almost a perfect cross between the too-low Sport Turismo and the Macan. What I like about the CT4 (vs. CT4S) is that you can keep the cost under $100k and not lose much at all. The Macan will probably benefit from more cargo space and cheaper cost to buy/own. But, like you, I'm planning to wait for the Macan BEV before deciding on that vs. the CT4; there are still too many bugs in the current Taycans that need ironing out by Porsche for me to invest that kind of money in their all-too-new BEV offerings.

You buy a Porsche Taycan because of its driving capabilities, because of its styling and shape, but not because of its interior space in first place. The interior space in the Cross Turismo is totally acceptable and much better than in the "normal" Taycan version. Why do you complain? You just can't have it all with a Porsche Taycan, because it's still a sports car or a very sporty electric GT.

If the added acceleration of the 4S was only 10k more then it would be a no brainer but that’s not the reality of the matter. 17k extra for the faster acceleration of the 4S is a hard pill to swallow.

By the way: here in Germany, the Model S is exactly as expensive than the Porsche Taycan base model! Do you really think, under such conditions, that a Model S would be more attractive to sporty customers, than such an amazing Taycan 4 Cross Turismo? The Taycan just outperforms any Tesla with pure driving capabilities. Because it's a PORSCHE! These guys know one or two things better than a rookie company like Tesla, which still is only pure straight line performance, how to make a drivers car, even it's electric! I had a turbo for one day: serious passes, highway and city drive was on the menu. Although on paper everything is good (and every single bit of the car is simply great) I was disappointed. A car to me has to give me as linear response as possible. On the mountains, not having the possibility to lock one of the two gears didn't gave me the confidence to know which one was engaged and the power delivery was suffering of this discontinuity. In city driving the "fine tuinig" is missing so the usual stop and go was not nice at all In the highway... well highways are just boring I had the chance to drive it on a track and it's more than great but... if I go for a track obviously I would choose something else than such a panzer. At the end of the day I was happy to go back to my "simple" (and modded) M3P. Nearly there. Porsche is nearly there. If they fix those things I would definitively consider
