If you're thinking of buying a premium badged mid-sized SUV, you might not be thinking of buying a Volvo XC60. Perhaps you should be. Jonathan Crouch drives the lightly revised version
Ten Second Review
Think of a premium-badged mid-sized compact SUV and you probably think of something German - an Audi Q5 perhaps, or maybe a Mercedes GLC or BMW X3. We'd also suggest though, that you should be looking at the car we're going to test here, the enhanced version of Volvo's second generation XC60. It's a now a rejuvenated proposition with the option of both mild hybrid and Plug-in hybrid tech.
Background
The first generation XC60 was the car that established Volvo in the minds of buyers in the mid-sized SUV segment. In nine years of production, it became the best selling car in its class in Europe, will nearly a million units sold annually, and accounted for 30% of Volvo's total global sales. Hence the crucial importance of this second generation which, along with the smaller XC40 model, is a key part of the Swedish marque's future SUV strategy.
This MK2 model XC60, first launched in 2017, shares its platform with its larger XC90 stablemate but isn't quite such a revolution in terms of its design as that model was at launch. Nevertheless, there's ground-breaking safety tech and smart looks that'll eat into the sales of key rivals like Audi's Q5 and the Mercedes GLC. A subtle update in 2021 saw this car smartened up and embellished with extra media and safety technology. Plus diesel was banished and the PHEV variants got bigger batteries and a more powerful rear motor.

My view on PHEV. And I've had two over the last 9 months or so. First a Mazda CX-60 that was overall a lovely car bat had a horrible vibration / resonance issue that ultimately made me return / reject the vehicle after 4 months. Now I've owned a T8 XC60 recharge for nearly 5 months. If you can charge at home then sign up for an EV tarriff with your provider. IF you do short trips daily - less than 20 or 25 miles a day (kids back and forth to school, supermarket runs, short commute to work) then this car will KILL your fuel bills. And to be fair the Mazda would have. Pure EV mode - using cheap overnight electricity is amazing - daily back and forth and the petrol engine nevers starts,. But when you need to take a longer trip then its not an issue. I do make a point of running mine in Power mode every week or so just to force the engine to run on a 10 mile or so trip. I NEVER run hybrid mode (always pure or power) as I really dislike he idea of the petrol engine being woken up under stress for 5 seconds. Pure is short trips when not in a hurry, Power is longs trips or once every week or so to run the engine. Fuel economy is crazy following this path ... had a few long petrol runs (North Wales and Heathrow - I live in the Midlands) and I'm still showing up towards combinned 90 mpg.

@@georgiosevgenios7510 3470 miles... I do most of my short trips in Pure but try to run the engine at least once a week. Anything over a 20 mile round trip I will put it in Power mode. I think my average is around 85 - 90 MPG right now.

Thanks. What year and battery size is your XC60? How long does it take to fully charge? Also, what would be the typical fuel consumption on a long motorway trip of say 300 miles? Currently have a Kia Niro Phev which will do 30 miles in EV mode quite easily. Average MPG over the last 7000 miles is 75mpg. I like the XC60 and am looking around for a good one. Thanks for your info. 👍🏻

@@user-io2et5bv2s Mine is a MY2024 with the 18.8KwH battery, winter battery range is around 30 miles - cabin heater heated seats and steering wheel etc take a toll, plus cold bayberry. Now it's mid 30s and sometimes estimates 38 - 40. Charge rate is slower than I expected. They were supposed to have installed a faster inverter (6Kw if I recall) on newer models but I still only see 3.6 or 3.8 Kw max. I don't usually take mine down to a heavily drained state but I did run it down to 4 miles remaining the other week and it took 4.45 hours to charge overnight. Motorway trips MPG depends on how fast you cruise. at 75MPH it's about 35 or a little over MPG. In power mode with charge un the battery it is very quick.

I don't know how it is in the UK but in Sweden here all the Volvo plug-in hybrid/petrol cars have their engines throttled, maximum speed 180 km/h regardless of which version and model you choose, so the question is what is the point of spending more money on from core edition to the Ultimate Plus which only differs with the equipment but the car itself looks the same and goes a maximum of 180km/h and charging takes 3-4 hours because these only go 78km then the petrol takes over then the question is is it really worth throwing out several hundred thousand that differ from the simple model to the maximum equipped model, so think about what you are going to buy. Volvo XC60 Core Edition 602000-Sek and Max equipped Ultimate Plus 859200-Sek .

The combination of Swedish design, Chinese technology investment and build quality control is quite successful on this vehicle. I don't love the engine but since I'm using the battery most of the time, it's acceptable. Having test driven the Cayenne e-hybrid as an alternative, I wasn't convinced the extra cost was worth it.

You thoroughly listed all the Volvo options but failed to mention what you could miss out on for your chosen spec which Volvo also fail on. Spec the heated windscreen and you'll lose the HUD. Spec the rear booster seats and the heating option will magically disappear. With Audi you may have an expensive choice of multiple options but at least they're up front with what will need to be removed if your chosen option can't be combine together.

What Volvo WON’T tell you about the XC 60…and I’m on my 3rd…is that the air conditioning system is faulty and every two years, it’ll likely malfunction to where the driver’s side will blow hot and humid air while the passenger side blows cold and muggy air making any driving experience absolutely unbearable no matter the time of year. And if you have no insurance, then expected to be on the hook for an almost $2000 fix. Other thing I’ve experienced the terrible sunroof that you can’t do without. After a period of time, it will develop a clog of debris that builds up in the tubes that normally will expel the water down through the pillars that connect to the roof to the main frame of the car. When it gets clogged the water will back up and then leak either inside your vehicle or worse, the floorboard of the driver side, causing your entire electrical system to burn out, because of a placed main chip that allows you to actually drive your vehicle. This happened to me not only did it turn on light on the dashboard, but it also prevented me from putting the car into drive. Driveshaft handle was stuck in park. Top of that when I went to turn the car off it refuses to turn off! I had to have it towed to Volvo dealership with my suv still running. 😮 Now the ridiculous answer when asked if they had any idea what might’ve happened to the vehicle was that they had never heard such a thing. Come to find out there is a technical journal filed with nhtsa.gov details the problem with the sunroof and furthermore Volvo admits they know about it yet they won’t pay for it because the problem doesn’t affect your life or severe injuries. Think long and hard before you consider this vehicle because if you’re a normal person like me… You will regret it.

Unless they updated mine over the air (built Sept 2023) then it's wired. AND you need to be careful about which dongle you buy to make it wireless - some of them just don't work with the onboard Android car OS. Ottocast U2Air Pro works just fine in my T8... stick it in the center console bin and it connects in 10 seconds or less.

Stop your focus on steering feel, the target market cares nought for this. Volvo has mostly nailed the family brief with this car. Would be closer to perfect if the rear seats had fore/aft adjustment, the door pockets shaped to accomodate large drink bottles and the driving info displayed more conventionally. At this premium end, its interior lighting game is incredibly weak
