We Solved Our TV Upscaling Test (TV Test Bench 1.11)

Ғылым және технология

We’ve designed a new test as part of our TV test bench, one that allows us to assess upscaling and sharpness image processing in a much more helpful way than originally. Instead of every TV getting a score of 8.0 for upscaling a 480p image, like a lot of you pointed out over the years, we now have scores for upscaling that actually reflect the image quality and performance. At the moment, we've updated 24 TVs, but we have another 49 planned.
In this video, we will walk you through this new test, how we created it, and look at our results so far and see which model and brands are better than the others. You can also compare the results yourself and make your own judgement by looking at the photos we took on our website!

    I think a good combination of media player and TV make great upscaling partners. I have an nVidia shiled with an LG CS OLED and i was shocked how good DVD looked. I recently got some old movies that are only available on DVD, was blown away with PQ, so I have decided to acquire my other collectables on DVD, not dismissing the format due to the upscaling capabilities I have now. It is a blessing in disguise when understood properly.

    Thank you for the great content as always! Shadow detail, black crush tests would be great, because blooming test may omit some of the shadow details. ABL test would also be great for OLEDs, and it should reflect the score. Burn-in as well should have a larger impact on the score, especially if there's no warranty from the maker. Some sort of "Creator's intent" custom test against reference monitors and checking how well TVs replicate BVM-HX3110 image would be awesome. Lot of enthusiasts (people who check TV reviews!!) want to go for a natural image, and the best way to test this on a TV would be to put a reference monitor next to it and compare IQ. Vincent at HDTV Test does this, and that is why I buy TVs based on his reviews, and always been very happy with what I've gotten. Rtings is a 2ndary site for me, used to be number one, but still provides good info generally. I very much like the burn-in test content, that is extremely valuable and made me not go for A95K and instead to X95K (for which you upgraded the review as well, albeit it should still score higher than C2 for example as the aggressive ABL and burn-in are at the very least as bad deficit as blooming is on X95K.)

    Congrats for ure start in KZread 😃👍🏼🍻 About your upscaling tests: I think 480p is not up to date. More realistic are 720p 🤝🏼 480p is only necessary for really old non 16:9 Serials or Films. When streaming from Disney or so the older films or serials are already upscale! Also when u have older stuff on ure home server, they are already upscale when transcode. So there are really a small use case under 1% for that. When u rate on 480p the tv manufacture will improve Ai on there TVs that cost us more when buying this TVs. Going with 480p don’t show the real daily use case and are not representative in my opinion. 🙌🏼

    The LG upscaling switches between favouring blur and favouring sharpness based on content detection. From what I can see, static images or anything filmed on a quality lens/camera with minimal compression artifacts takes the blurry algorithm, while anything else alternates between the two. You can see it clearly switching if you set subtitles to grey text with black outline and watch mixed content - sometimes the subtitles will have ringing artifacts and sometimes not

    There was some issues with our test. For example the Sony OLEDs were being overly penalized when looking at the screen directly. This means that our test was not aligned with normal content. We are not closing the door forever as there is a lot of impact in these near blacks/shadow details that are important to users. What it means is that we have much more to understand and master before we can design a test to properly test this. We also need to think how this is impactful in both SDR and HDR content.

    Hi there, When we test TVs in general, they are going to default to a 16:9 aspect ratio. If we you are referring to our upscaling test this is a little more complicated. We send a 720x480 resolution to the TV via windows PC and play a video on MPC-HC player (the idea is to mimic DVD playback here). Using the TVs scaling/aspect ratio settings we then make sure the desktop is filling the most screen space without excessive cropping or overscan. Within the player we set the aspect ratio to assume square pixels. This is because windows works in square pixels (1:1) so most video players are designed to rectify non square pixels so you can enjoy DVDs and similar content on your laptop/monitor. However, the DVD players do not for historical reasons and modern TVs do this to keep backwards compatibility. So, if we let the PC correct the pixels then the TV applies the same correction twice and the image will not be displayed properly.

    I have Samsung 55 s95c , how can I test upscaling if the upscaling it automatic ? I was chat with support Samsung and he say that upscaling work also with band in bottom and top , but in rtings say thay work when the screen are stretch in full screen? So I ask you , how can I test the upscaling in that tv where can I see the difference in upscaling off and on ? In that tv is true or not that upscaling work also if the image are not stretch in full screen ?

    This can be such a complex issue for consumers. My Sony UltraHD/Bluray player upscales... And my Sony STR AZ1000ES receiver upscales.. And my Sony X90K TV upscales... Clearly they all aren't upscaling at the same time. If one of them upscales to 4K, then the rest downstream should not do any upscaling .. am I right? But which is the best at upscaling? Is it the TV? With its Bravia processor? They are all Sony so it may not make a difference. But I wonder...

    I recently took back a TCL Q7 because of its issues with scaling. It looked great half of the time with cable TV. But it would aggressively smooth certain images until they looked like water paintings. Coming from a Sony 900f this was untolerable. I can't stand aggressive smoothing and macroblocking. I personally feel as if scaling differences are being understated and that reviewers overlook how important it is.

    @@deanwilliams433 short version: eye fatigue due to judder. long version: it’s a game with lots of orbiting a camera around a character with a far away backdrop behind it, and spinning at high speeds means for each frame at 30fps the environment moves a great distance, and as your eyes try panning smoothly across that scene to follow objects they all become a motion blurred smear due to persistence, enabling the soap opera effect yields a frame of latency, and some occasional edge artifacts, but all the motion blur is gone if the implementation is good, my tv does 120hz mothion smoothing with bfi at 240hz which results in effectively an 8x increase in clarity, that’s something i like to do to avoid eye fatigue when playing for many hours at a time. upscaling can also reduce eye fatigue if done right as the eyes can focus on a clear image, whereas if you’re looking at a blurry image your eyes will try to shift the focal plane into focus to compensate but fail to rest at one

    How is upscaling in game mode? I have no intention to use a TV to watch TV or netflix or anything, I just need it as a PC monitor. Since my PC won't run games in 4K, I will play them on 1080, which is enough for me (done that for a decade by now on my current TV). Do those upscale features kick in while in gaming mode? I assume they increase input lag a lot? I'd prefer to see only 1080 tests but it seems our website does not want to show me those.

  • @RTINGScomRD

    @RTINGScomRD

    All TVs upscale automatically; it's not a 'feature', it's just what they need to do to take a lower resolution signal and scale it to fit their 4k native panel. Game Mode disables every processing feature that is likely to increase input lag, although sometimes you can enable some that will add lag, as with Samsung's Game Motion Plus. Some TVs do have upscaling specific features, such as LG's Super Resolution, that are still available in Game Mode, but these features don't tend to noticeably impact input lag, and you can disable them. One thing that has been shown to make input lag worse however is when you're asking the TV to upscale a lower resolution that isn't in an 16:9 format, such as when gaming in 4:3 with retro games. But otherwise, 1080p upscaling tends to give the same input lag numbers as native 4k. Hope this helps!

Assuming TVs get 15% faster a year (which is a very generous guess) it would take TVs another decade to have enough performance 🤷‍♂️
