We should have NEVER LEFT FRSKY! The X9D Plus SE

Ғылым және технология

When it comes to tech NEWER is always BETTER, right? Sometimes, the best option isn't the one that's hot off the line.. Sometimes the best option is the OG option!
I've been flying the Taranis Qx7 from Frsky ever since the day I picked up an FPV Drone for the first time in 2018. Somewhere along the way, I felt like I was outgrowing my transmitter but could never find another one to fully replace it. I've tried radios like the Jumper t16 and t18 to gamer style controllers like the tango2 and even newer stuff like the radiomaster tx16s. I don't think I'm very picky when it comes to radios but all of them had some sort of issue, either technical problems or didn't feel right in my hand or just a crappy design all around.. Whatever the reason, I never found a radio I felt was an improvement or good enough for me to relearn and adapt my flight to, Until Now! I've finally found a super sick radio and it turns out it was right under my nose this entire time!

    Tim Proctor people are mad because frsky went closed source so no third party companies can make receivers with their protocol, so tiny whoops for example cant have receivers build into the board. also all the new frsky radios arent compatible with crossfire unless u do the stupid mod, which is a move they made to shut out crossfire and promote their R9 long range system

    The x9D feels so great because its a direct rip off of the old JR 9303 radios which in their day if you had one you were living good. They were not cheap. Don't be fooled though. Frsky's original x9d had their share of problems. They had lcd issues and if you used a 433 module in them you got to listen to the buzzer moan the whole flight and also it would trigger some of the buttons because there is no shielding inside and the board just had issues. As a owner of a x9d, two x9d+, two jumpers and now a radiomaster t16s I can say the radiomaster for its first release has done a pretty good job. The color screen is great for those who use telemetry especially the ardupilot/copter crowd. 18650 vs the old nimh is a no brainer. It also fits the hands much better because it has trigger like finger rests on the back. After the ribbon cable fiasco with Jumper I will only buy their receivers but if the radiomaster holds up over time this could be my primary for years to come.

  • @kandredfpv
    @kandredfpv3 жыл бұрын

    I love my X9D+. It was my first FrSky radio after starting out on crappy FlySky gear. I bought it second hand, and upgraded to the M9 gimbals. Even broke and replaced the LCD. I also bought the Q7 and didn't like the mold, as a pincher it bruised my hands. All that said, I hate that FrSky created ACCESS (with end-to-end encryption) to try and corner the market and lock out competition. I invested in the ACCST R9 system and felt screwed when they discontinued it and ended firmware updates. I think this why people in the FPV community are ditching FrSky. Regardless of what you think about Jumper, having competition and options is good. It certainly forced FrSky to provide budget radios for beginners.

    I'm a thumber and my QX7 is my only piece of original hardware still in full use. Still has my first ever quad in the top slot and my latest in my last. I also set my gimbals as loose as they will go without losing the centre return. I got an X-lite and it's been a paperweight since the week I got it as the gimbals are horrible stiff and can't be adjusted. I looked at the Tango 2 but it only has two spring sets which I wonder if will even be loose enough to match my QX7. Then Trappy said the V3 Tango 2's will only support 500mW where as the V3 Micro module will be supporting 1000mW in next weeks firmware update so I may be better off just upgrading my V1 Micro module and sticking with my QX7. My only complaint is the sheer size of my QX7 for carrying.

    I get what you are saying about the T16. It is terrible in the hands, especially for thumbers. I own a Tango 2, and love it. I also recently bought the TX16S with the full 2W Crossfire module. This transmitter is MUCH better in the hands. Have you tried it? I personally cannot support FrSky. I used to use nothing else but FrSky. I took a pretty big loss by getting rid of it all, and am currently very happy with the RadioMaster TX16S. It is very similar, but completely different than the Jumper T16, at the same time. I really like the Tango 2, for regular mini quads, but needed the extra auxiliary switches, and module bay for the full Crossfire TX, for larger aircraft/longer range. In my opinion, it’s a great combo. It has great ergonomics for your hands on the back side, unlike the Jumper. I do understand what you are saying about the Taranis X9D, but for me it is just not an option. Please tell me that you have tried the RadioMaster. WAAAY better than the Jumper, in feel, and quality.

    Still like my non-plus , original, early adopter, now heavily modded with top mounted micro usb, Hall gimbal X9d. FrSky brought me back into the greatest hobby with OpenTx and great telemetry. I really loved telemetry in my gliders. I also still like the Jumper T16 that I upgraded to Pro 2 and replaced the ribbon cables and replaced the thumb roller once. I am a pincher...mostly and I do use this radio for INav on 2.4g ELRS on Quads and planes. I like the screen because of the INav LUA script that I use for preflight checks, but then it shuts down to save battery...well I use 21700 4000mah 2s that lasts a week. I did recently buy an on sale Eachine T16 for the price of a QX7 for when the Jumper finally gives up. The T16S has proven to be a robust but cheap deal. I hate that FrSky wouldn't make simple the Firmware issues and continued to rely on users, KZreadrs and bloggers to bridge the Gap in their lack of support. I was ready to purchace an X20....really like it...but first they wouldn't just sell me the radio alone....then no Open Tx support, all the while I am having trouble getting Access registering to work with a QX7access I bought for Dad when his X9d plus started having range and fail-safe issues. They just don't seem to care that some of their receivers kill themselves, that they don't have universal Smartport connections for firmware updating, that they don't even include labels on the Smartport connection of the Transmitters or their documentation, that they continue to use the old usb. Hey I want FrSky to be a model of what fpv, LOS, pattern, glider, and beginners need and want. Then I'll stop buying cheap, open sourced, gear that amazes me what can be done with it. Better yet, I'd buy a Made in the USA if we would just do it right.

    I fly Futaba 18SZ and I'm beginning to show more and more interest in Frsky, mainly because of their attractive Rx lineup and low price. My next radio will probably be a Taranis X9D. But the Futaba gimbals and switches blow everything you're showing here out of the water in terms of feel and ergonomics. It will feel like a downgrade for me when (if) I do switch.

    Yeah... sorry for this novella. TLDR: different strokes for different folks. It’s Radiomaster for me. I didn’t want to spend money on a radio when I already had one, but I got the TX16S and I don’t miss my old FrSky at all. Your main complaint about the way the T16 fits in your hand is definitely valid but that is addressed in the Radiomaster, which has the molded grips on the back side. It is considerably nicer in the hand, has better switch placement, and is generally a lot higher quality than the T16. Equal to a Taranis? Idk. Probably not, but it costs $50-60 less and definitely feels good to hold. Excellent gimbals and construction, overall. It’s not “good for the price;” it’s just good. I also really hated updating and binding/rebinding on FrSky; just got so sick of trying to understand ACCST/ACCESS/ACRSTS/ACSTRTSCST/whatever-poorly-explained-alphabet-soup protocol they’re using now. Granted, it was the switch to CRSF - not moving away from FrSky - that fixed that problem for me. The way FrSky threw their weight around and banned US retailers from selling competitors’ radios was a major dick move. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. Chinese companies “bullying” (aka financially constraining) relatively small American businesses like GetFPV and RDQ is just not acceptable in my book. People have different preferences and that’s fine. If people like junk radios or if that’s all they can afford, more power to them. I also totally understand people who like FrSky products - they make undeniably high quality hardware. I mean, I used my FrSky radio for 3+ years and while it made me want to pull my hair out from time to time, it generally worked fine. They also arguably did more than anyone else to make FPV what it is by making a decent radio for less than the $500+ offerings from old school powerhouses like Spektrum and Futaba. That still isn’t enough for me, personally, to ignore their shady business practices - especially now that there’s viable competition out there. Not sure why I felt like typing so much, but there’s my half-cent opinion [/end rant]. Cheers dude!

I’m on the Qx7 currently and I like it but I know what you are saying about readjusting your hands from slippage on the radio when flying. Anyways just wanted to thank you for making these vids and always tellin it how it is!!!! Your videos are pretty much the only FPV videos I still watch you and Kabab sometimes when he’s not making commercials for his own store and his own products, and nurk and JohnnyFPV of course.. I wouldn’t mind an hour of you just talking about new equipment thats coming out that you think it good or even things you think are just hype or stuff like that, just an idea! Thanks again. .

    Looking more like they are going to dump the X9D which would be a shame pushing the new expensive horus like Tandem radio over $400. I have a X12S I fly fixed wing but would like the newer Access radios planning on getting a new Taranis Qx7S maybe if I like it sell my X12S. I never used more then 9 channels all that telemetry is nice can't really pay any attention to it have to pilot. Color displays who needs them not like your watching movies on them. Can't even see these displays in the sun anyway maybe if they put OLED, or AMOLED might be nice touch screen programming not really something I need. The big ticket items the QX7S ACCESS radio has like wireless receiver upgrades.
