This movie is my childhood, and it's amazing to think that this was the first fully cgi animated film. I like how they knew the technology was limited, so they worked around the issue of everything having a "plasticy" look by making the main characters plastic toys. And of course, the story and characters are amazing. Pixar really came swinging right out of the gate.

What's weird is that in the original storyboard/Deleted Scenes of Toy Story, Woody was extremely unlikable however that wasn't John Lasseter and his team's idea to make Woody that mean, It was actually Jeffrey Katzenberg who thought of the idea of making Toy Story more edgier compared to being more family friendly, which is no surprise since he would later work at DreamWorks to make Shrek.

Yeah, they made Woody meaner and Buzz extremely clueless and naive, I’m so glad they decided to tone down their personalities and made them more well-rounded. Like, Woody is still kind of a jerk, but that’s stemming from his insecurity, and for the most part he’s a good guy. And while Buzz is naive at some points, he’s not a doormat either, he’s capable of putting two and two together and standing up for himself.

I saw the documentary "The Pixar Story" from 2007 and thats where I first saw the story of their "Black Friday" reel and as a fan, its almost unwatchable to see characters that you love that way, it's crazy how much Lasseter and his team early on were pushed to make the movie "edgier". While that humor worked perfectly for Shrek, it didnt fit in with the story Lasseter wanted to tell. Granted that's the studio systems and them always giving notes, sometimes its helpful but sometimes it isnt. What's more crazy is that the studio gave them I think only 2 or 3 weeks to essentially start from scratch and make a new pitch for the film and they did! It was a battle up until the film released with their big Pixar image computers running practically 24/7 to get the film done and if any one of those shut down, it would've been a catastrophe. This film has to me become one of those immortal classics, not just because it was the first full length CG animated film, but it's because of how truly good the film is and the first 3 Toy Story films are I think one of the best film trilogies, period.

Time to blow you guys’ minds; 9 years before this movie came out, a Jim Henson TV movie called “the Christmas toy” came out. It also involved toys coming to life, the favorite toy feeling threatened of being replaced, also by a new, space-themed toy who did not know they were a toy. As an added drama, if toys were seen by people out of place from where they were last left, they basically died. It’s way to much similarity to not have been toy story’s inspiration. I suggest checking it out cause it actually is a good movie. just checked and the full movie is free to watch on YT

11:00 Fun fact: the Buzz Lightyear commercial is narrated by Penn Jillette, of Penn & Teller fame. And funnily enough, Penn & Teller would later do a show called _Bovine Faeces!_ where they'd debunk popular myths in society (e.g. religion, politics, marketing, everyday mumbo-jumbo), so him debunking Buzz's entire worldview is retroactively perfect casting.

A classic movie that upstarted Pixar stream of many Classic films. Toy Story also changed the animation industry forever with how animated films are made really. Now all animated films are made with CGI, instead of hand drawn animating. Studios figure out early that CGI animation films were for outperforming the hand drawn ones. Despite the CGI being more expensive to produce, the profits were huge for it be totally worth it.

I believe one of the reasons why this movie holds up visually is because most of it is centered around toys. And being toys, they don't need to look hyper-realistic to be believable. And if something doesn't look quite right on a character, you can just chalk it up to said character being a toy, rather than the issue being the animation's technology.

The story I remember is John Lasseter was a Disney animator that advocated 3D animation (like they used in Beauty and the Beast) but for an entire film but Disney execs thought that could never work and kept shooting him down. He left Disney with a few others, got funding from Steve Jobs, and bought the Pixar computer from Lucas and named their company after it. They did shorts and commercials at first. Toy Story was their first movie. They got Buena Vista (Disney’s distribution company) to distribute it. And they did this for several movies until Disney outright bought Pixar and brought all of its people back into the fold. I think it’s a neat story. Fun side note, a Disney movie I love, The Brave Little Toaster, a movie about appliances that come to life when their owners are not around and go on a journey to find them after years left in a summer home, was done by many of the same people that did the Toy Story movies.

You guys gotta watch A Bug’s Life next. It’s super underrated in terms of Pixar films.

Maybe this is biased and childhood talking but I personally say that the Toy Story movies are the most iconic Pixar films to date! Don't get me wrong. The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Brave, etc all masterpieces but there's just something about Toy Story that always felt the most special. Hope you guys do the sequels. The 3rd is my personal favorite.

I know even now fur can be a struggle but Pixar pulled it off well during Monster's Inc with Sulley alone. The humans also seem rough in this movie too.

Honestly you would think it does clear my favorite Pixar movie but if you haven't watched The Incredibles as an adult and really thought about the themes plot points and the attention to detail you would never guess that it clears every Pixar movie and arguably every Disney movie IMO and this coming from someone whos favorite show growing up was toy story .

Never really thought about it before, but if Buzz was a real ranger as he thought, with a real laser, he would have at least tased a random, friendly, inhabitant of a new planet. Not very paragon.
