The fox should not be captured, it belongs in that area where its home is. With living in such close proximity to wild nature foxes are to be expected. Just keep an eye on the dog and keep the chickens out of reach, every farmer knows this.

Large raptors live in mountainous regions, the Alps and Pyrenees, Foxes almost never attack dogs- more like the other way around, Even a small dog would be safe unless it threatened the fox's babies Lancelot is no longer as small as he was. He is fast and agile and would no doubt fearlessly chase away any fox he saw. Foxes are not coyotes, nothing like them, They are usually shy creatures that avoid conflict. Unfortunately however, poultry are very vulnerable to foxes and need to be contained securely for their own safety, The dog will be absolutely fine

Foxes don't attack dogs, or cats. In fact one of my previous cats used to play with a fox cub. The cub would wait in the garden for her and they go off together. Went on for a year until the fox was hit by a car. They will kill chicken s however, not be sure they are killers but because an accessible chicken run is their equivalent of stocking up on a special offer at Costco.

Stephanie…FYI Anna and Peter, former Chateau owners, had an incident at their current farm home where all their chickens were slaughtered by a single pine marten during the night. You may want to compare notes with them, and commiserate some with them, on what they did to combat the pine marten. I will also offer a comment I made to them to secure a couple of West Highland White Terriers to take care of and to rid you of the menacing carnivores, fox or pine martens, which is what they were bred for. I own two and they are very formidable with vermin. Hey…what’s two more dogs and they are very cute. Just my thoughts.

Those foxes have been living around the chateau and woodlands since before you came. They eat rodents and other small pests, and usually leave your cats and dogs alone. Since you recently lost a couple of your charming chickens 8 months ago, and last month found your chicken run decimated, I'm wondering if you currently have a mated pair who are feeding for their kits. The best solution in my opinion is to move forward with what you are doing: build an impervious chicken run and by no means allow the chickens to roam the walled garden when no one is working in it. It would be advisable to VERY carefully examine all the outer walls and entry points to ensure no tunneling under walls. It appears the walls are all much too high to be jumped over, other than the one the new chicken run material was lifted over, but isn't the moat along that entire wall? If not that low wall is an easy entry point.

We lost four of our chickens to a weasel attack about four to six weeks ago. It had gotten in our coop in the morning before I had let them out in their run. It was absolutely devastating. We have them as pets and love them deeply. We thought they were safe in their coop and run, but didn’t have enough safety measures. Thankfully we had another coop we built last summer. We quickly updated it with extra safety precautions. Now we are building a run onto the side. It should be completed in a week. If you want to prevent more attacks I recommend you build an enclosed run with a underground apron. Use 1/8” hardware mesh. I didn’t realize weasels can get into spaces as small as 1/4”, and they hunt nightime and daytime.

I'm so very sorry to hear about the chickens suffering such a horrible fate. You're all so tenderhearted with the animals of Lalande. Poor Marie finding such carnage in the otherwise peaceful walled garden. 😢 I'm so sorry she had to see it. I know it's a really big ask, but please try not to be too cross with the foxes. A fox finding a pen filled with chickens is like a human walking into a well stocked pantry. Living harmoniously with predator species can be challenging but it is possible. Foxes have a super important role keeping forest habitats healthy and strong by keeping small mammal populations in check. Their absence in many areas of the world is why ticks have become such a huge problem. The small species of rodents that serve as hosts to the tick larvae at the beginning of the tick life cycle, need to be kept in check by foxes, birds of prey, etc., to stop forests from becoming infested with ticks. I know you'll get the chicken run sorted out properly. Seeing the wildlife return to Lalande means the forest is finally healing from all the hunting from decades past. That's a beautiful thing! ❤

Good morning from Toowoomba in Queensland, Australia. A suggestion you may take on board. Re the storage containers, prior to placing anything in the containers, purchase a can of powdered borax and sprinkle it liberally along all sides of the container. This will stop any type of insect invasion. It is not harmful to others, ie. humans or animals. During the summer months and only if you have wooden furniture stored, place a bucket of water just inside the entrance and refill as necessary. This will ensure your furniture doesn't dry and crack. Good luck, love your vlogs Stephanie and et al LeLanders. Take care ❤️

Speaking from experience, the chicken coop needs a chicken wire roof as well as full length chicken wire walls (or solid walls). The wire also needs to be buried into the ground (wall) at least 50cm to prevent digging underneath and with the wire bent outwards to prevent access. Foxes are able to climb and enter any tiny hole that's available to climb through. I have lost several hens in the past and this seems to be the only deterrant. Good luck with it.

The attack on your chickens sounds less like a fox and more like a weasel or a mink. We had mink breaking into our neighbours' chicken coops when i worked at a plant nursery that had rescue chickens. The mink killed every chicken in each coop it attacked, and took none of them. Foxes don't kill for sport (that's a myth) like weasels and mink do.

With all due respect, that's not our business. The fox is one of the few larger native wild animal species we have in Europe and they live in the countryside and forests. So if you don't want your chickens to become fodder, you have to take appropriate precautions and build a suitable coop. It's not the fox's fault that he chases his prey. So why blame him for man's mistakes?

The foxes are only present because of hunger and trying to feed their young. They are wild animals but they also need food and support to obtain this hence why not get cheap cuts of meat scraps/bones etc and leave it at a safe distance from the buildings/walled garden and they can be trained as they have the instinct to recognize the food location and this will minimize the risk although a reinforced chicken coop is ideal. I speak from experience as I have fed foxes for years and have even watched them waiting for the cat to finish eating before then taking their portion, they only attack to survive. I don't treat them as 'pets' as they are wild animals and this needs to be respected but it simply helps them to survive and minimize attacking living creatures. They are very timid and are only aggressive when hunger is their enemy and surprisingly they move on after a time.
