Fellow ice cream lover here. I fell in love with running years ago by chance. Running outside was therapy for a rare vestibular disorder I developed. Running gave me confidence in my balance and helped my disorder go into remission. I kept on running for the joy of it. Well, the disorder is back. Running is very difficult to do because of it. The joy will come again for me in due time. In the meantime I'll share in your joy.

Chicago is by far my favourite course, atmosphere to match London, nice early start, no standing around for hours before the start and almost no elevation. Gps pretty useless in the city centre however!

I’m fortunate that this was the first running channel that I came across when I first started running a couple of years ago. Focusing on the joy of running, reaffirming my identity as a runner, and advocating for low heart rate training really impacted my running in a very positive way. Joy breeds consistency which results in performance. For amateur runners, performance is just a byproduct of pursuing all of the other physical and mental benefits of running. I hope you don’t feel pressured to perform by your viewers. I just appreciate you sharing your journey with us. I will keep you both in my prayers that you rediscover the joy that you’ve helped many of us to find.

Chicago is one of my favorite races!! Notes: 1) the tall buildings WILL mess with your GPS watch; they have time clocks at every mile, but you might need to run on feel more than usual and do time maths. 2) The roads are concrete and will tear your legs to pieces more than a normal marathon. 3) Kuma's Corner, a heavy metal-themed burger bar, is the BESTEST location for post-race stuffing of the face. I wish you both an amazing training cycle and race!!

As a Chicago Native and 3x runner of this marathon, Industrial Park towards the end of the race is BORING. And this is where a lot of runners fail because it’s a ghost town and all you hear is the click clacks of the carbon shoes. Definitely the most mentally challenging part of the race.

The last mile isn’t too bad. It’s between Chicago Medical District (mile 15ish and Pilson (17ish) that’s the hard part. But I’ve been told they are supposed to be returning to the pre COVID route and going through IIT/Bronzeville which has typically been more heavily attended by observers which will help during the last three miles.

Needed this vid, put in a massive effort to run sub 3:30 at Manchester in April and booked in to Berlin, and have got into London 2025 ballot. And motivation is pretty much zero, so have adjusted my goals and trying to find my love for running again. And also focus on the achievements I have made since starting running 2 years ago at 54. Manchester was only my second marathon. So my goal is to finish 3 marathons in 1 year that’s it! I have done 1 at Manchester and PBd, I am just gonna enjoy Berlin and London.

your pbs are already amazing and in my lifetime i will never come close, but that's okay. because as you say running is about having fun. if for you getting even faster and faster makes you happy, go for it. but if training together makes you happy even if it's not the "perfect" pace for both of you, you should do that. even kipchoge pointed out that you should always be able to smile after a run. good luck on the project. i just registered for my next marathon in may next year and looking forward to it already, weather or not it will be a pb. 🎉

Guys, it sounds like your bodies both let you know that you ran yourselves into the ground. It’s certainly is making me aware of the dangers of over training and marathon running in general. Training for a marathon and working full time in stressful jobs obviously takes its toll. You both look well now so fingers crossed you remain so. The joy element of the approach is such a good idea!

I'm excited that you're doing this series!! I too am running Chicago after having just ran London in April. I have been struggling with finding motivation for the Chicago training block and maintaining the excitement and fun that I experienced while training for London. I began experiencing lower back pain leading up to London, and after seeing Mary's posts about her disc issues, I went to my dr and got x-rays of my lumbar spine. Just found out that there is facet arthritis at L4/5 on both sides. So we're working with that. Thanks Mary for sharing all of your journey, because I wouldn't have gone this quickly to sort it out. Hope to meet you two in Oct :)

I’ve had a lot of issues with a hip for years and had PRP treatment 2 years ago, but I’m 66 years old and the arthritis is real! I mostly do a run/walk, but I’m training for a 5k in 6 weeks. I’m also looking for the joy! Thanks for the inspiration. Looking forward to watching your training!

Since then, no matter what the training plan says, I make sure each week has at least One run that is simply and only for the joy of the sport. Fast, slow, clinging, technical Descents, thru the woods. Whatever is calling me. Works wonders

I believe the experiment of more long runs was successful in that you learned from it. Unsuccessful experiments are where you don't learn. Before the experiment, you probably always thought "if only I trained harder, I'd be better Now you know that assumption was wrong. Isn't that a wonderful thing to learn?
