We regularly advocate that EP had the whole package: he could sing any song and genre, his unique vocal signatures, his diverse ability vocally, his connection with his audience, his beauty and charisma, and his humility and kindness were on a different plane to everyone then or since. He also arranged, produced, and conducted the music he sang and recorded. EP was the ultimate and original all-rounder.....one in a lifetime 💯⚡❤

Actually it's "The King of Rock'n'roll" (not just "the king") there are many kings within music.

Elvis is the man of 1000 voices, he choses what voice to sing different songs with. If you listen to a ballad by Elvis from the same year, you get a different smooth voice. Same thing during all his career.

Yes, during one Ed Sullivan show, Elvis sang "Peace in the Valley" and it was a totally different voice, so deep and compelling.

Elvis’s voice got stronger as he grew older…….watch “Bridge over troubled water” live in Las Vegas…….a vocal masterpiece

i feel the version from "elvis on tour" was the best where he has greater range

To me, what makes his expertise at showmanship and owning the stage even more impressive is that he was just barely three years out of high school in 1956! He was 21 here. The film he's referring to was his first movie "Love Me Tender" which co-starred Richard Egan and Debra Padget. His fine natural acting ability, humor, and dramatic expression were already showing in it.

Elvis from 1954-58 was pure energy. A lightning rod. That's really his great period. I love his 1968-73 era as well but '54-58 is really what made him a legend. When you listen to all of his recordings from that period, he's absolutely full of great energy, sound, and it's just addictive to listen to and to watch. These recordings are 70 years old now and still strike people and light you up - how many artists can say that? Not many.

I agree. I was 12 when I saw him on the Sullivan show. Couldn’t play his records enough on my little 45 record player!!

Great analysis. Not a great song for his vocals, but it really shows his stage presence and charisma. Nobody could match that. And dear god he was beautiful!!

His voice wasn't fully developed, he got much better and had more control later on.. Can you imagine, how good he already was , and also take in account that he didn't use a standard microphone, but a microphone above his head out of view had to pick up that voice...Simply history in the making.

If you want to hear what his voice could really do, If I Can Dream, Trouble and Tryin’ To Get To You from his 1968 Comeback Special are peak Elvis and mandatory listening. His range and vocal control were off the charts. He could go from smooth to raspy and back again effortlessly. He could sing any song. Not just rock. He was great with blues.

Elvis had a super power. He knew the power he had over his audiences and he knew how to use it. Dude was one of THE great performers and he knew it.

People just hadn’t seen performing like this. You were watching the beginning of rock ‘n’ roll music.

Notice that there is no microphone appearing on the screen. A microphone was placed on the ceiling above their heads, and it was the only microphone for everyone! That's why he had to have a powerful voice to overcome the instruments, and the screams of the audience.

He was also a GREAT natural unfiltered vocal talent

Elvis is simply the GOAT.

"If I Can Dream" is my favorite Elvis song. There is power in that voice.

I remember watching Elvis on TV when he came on the scene and I remember not only was Elvis known for his voice but another thing that made him so famous was his exceptional good looks. He's probably the best looking man that was ever seen on TV or anywhere else, especially in those days! You would just had to been there!

Great reaction! His manager noticed Elvis's unprecedented effect on a live audience the way you did when he first saw him perform! Watch the "Elvis" movie with Tom Hanks if you haven't already. They reenact Elvis getting discovered. Watch the audience react to him singing "Trying to Get to you" during his 1968 Comeback Special! Awesome!

He was a precious gift from God. One that we will never see again. I am 70. I was there at the beginning. In 1956 when I was 3 years old, my whole family went to see Elvis at the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans. I can still remember bits and pieces of it, especially his dancing. My sister was a teenager so I was right in the middle of all of the wonderful fifties rock and roll. In fact, Frankie Ford of Sea Cruise fame used to practice in our backyard in New Orleans with his band. I had a wonderful childhood and my parents also were very cool and loved every minute of it.

Thanks for this great video! As far as we know, Elvis had the most beutiful male voice God ever created.

I totally agree the rock and roll of early Elvis didn't empress me but as I got older and heard him sing some wonderful ballads I realized this man had beautiful voice

Hound Dog (on record, if not this TV performance) definitely shows off his vocal ability. The grit and growl in his voice in the opening line is one of the most amazing vocals ever recorded.

He is so cute, such a tease. I'm right there with the audience watching for his every smile and especially his dance moves..

Your level of musical understanding is fantastic. I've seen a bunch of analyses done on Elvis. This was the most interesting perhaps because I learned things that I and others had missed.

Thank you for your expert analyse of this particular performance and Elvis’ essence as a singer/performer. One of the puzzles of Elvis Presley was his incredible voice. I’ve this to share with you: Elvis Presley was a baritone whose voice had an extraordinary compass - the so-called register - and a very wide range of vocal colour. It covered two octaves and a third, from the baritone low-G to the tenor high B, with an upward extension in falsetto to at least a D flat. Presley's best octave was in the middle, D-flat to D-flat. "He has always been able to duplicate the open, hoarse, ecstatic, screaming, shouting, wailing, reckless sound of the black rhythm-and-blues and gospel singers. But he has not been confined to that one type of vocal production." In ballads and country songs he was able to belt out "full-voiced high Gs and As that an opera baritone might envy," showing a remarkable ability to naturally assimilate styles. His "voice has always been weak at the bottom, variable and unpredictable. At the top it is often brilliant. His upward passage would seem to lie in the area of E flat, E and F." Presley's range, though impressive in its own right, did not in itself make his voice that remarkable, at least in terms of how it measured against musical notation. What made it extraordinary, was where its centre of gravity lay. By that measure, and according to Gregory Sandows, Music Professor at Columbia University, Presley was at once a bass, a baritone, and a tenor, most unusual among singers in either classical or popular music. If you would think about another analyse of his voice I can recommend to watch and see Elvis perform “What now my love” in the Aloha from Hawaii special of 1973 or “Hurt” as he performed in 1977, just 6 six before his death. In that last performance he is visibly in a bad shape and obviously to sick to perform. Beautiful reaction. For sheer vocal power, dynamic control, and range, captured in far greater resolution than here, try the live performances of "An American Trilogy" or "What Now My Love," from 1973, or "Bridge Over Troubled Water" or "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" from 1970. Or many, many others.

Thank you for this wonderful reaction :)❤ He just loved music, and it shows. When he sang, he was in his element. I`ve loved him through all his stages. In the beginning, I loved his 50s songs. With time, I added the following stages, and I still love them all. When I became his fan, he was old enough to be my father. Now, I`m old enough to be his mother, and sooner than I would like, I will be old enough to be his grandmother :) But when I`m watching him being as young, energetic, and charming as he is in this clip, he`s turning me into that teenager again, who was madly in love with this beautiful young man :)

Interesting to hear your analysis of him which is spot on. He was the total package and his voice just got better with time.

I remember years ago giving some advice to a younger musician who needed some serious dynamics in his vocals: Told him to listen to a lot of Elvis. From 1 song to the next, Elvis was able to adjust his dynamics in a way that separated him from the rest BTW: one of my favourite performances, even if it in a movie, is Trouble from the King Creole movie.

Yes! She ought to react to that scene from the movie. And King Creole was a seriously great movie. The filmography in it is awesome too! Black and white with the art deco and dramatic long shadows etc. Love those movies. Mid to late fifties movies still had some of that 1940s look to them before it all went away in the 60s

Wonderful, Bethany, that you ventured out on a limb, reacting to Elvis Presley's performance in the year that I was 5 years old, ha! I had no idea at that time, in Holland. Television hardly entered homes in the 50s. But I've heard Elvis great voice often, later. One of a kind he was. Elvis was the first performer who used his pelvis so obviously. His nickname was Elvis the Pelvis. I think that this completely new way of stage performance caused those girls to start yelling and screaming. Also because he had that flirting smile on his face, often. Sexy. I do remember how girls were fainting in such performances, with charismatic celebrities on stage. Guards were always present at the back, waiting for the first fainting girls, and carrying them away. I remember seeing those scenes on a black-and-white television. 60's.

First of all, thank you very much for your reaction to Elvis. You recognized already that this is not the best sample for his work - he has so many other offerings that feature much better and more dynamic vocal control and range, even from this era (1956 - "Love Me", "Don't Be Cruel", "Teddy Bear", etc). But your analysis is so interesting and insightful. I'd say his voice was at its peak in the 1960s and his performances from 1969-71, highlighted by the "That's The Way It Is" concert movie from 1970. I really find 1973 to be a turning point for him. His voice was so good yet he was so troubled. This is when his personal and health issues, not to mention his self-harming habits, started to really overwhelm him.

Fantastic study. For his vocal range, you must show 'What now my love' from the Aloha rehearsal show. An amazing power house of a performance. Listen and marvel at that final note he reaches!

Honestly, I enjoy watching you watch the video. You have beautiful reactions. Yes, Elvis was, is, and shall always be The King.

In the spring of '56 my closest friend told me I had to hear this new song, so different from anything he'd ever heard: Heartbreak Hotel. And it was. Then in the summer of '56 in Army processing at Fort Ord, I Want You, I Need You, I Love You filled the barracks. To top it off, Elvis replaced me in the Army! I left active duty 3/24/1958, the day he came in. My son's wedding songs were all Elvis songs! A friend visited Graceland, and bought and gave to me a little statuette of Elvis, which sits atop a bookcase in my den. Obsessed? Neh.

Another captivating Elvis appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show is when Elvis was filmed only from the waist up due to the hysteria that Elvis evoked when he sang Hound Dog, is his performance of Peace In The Valley. Also, I suggest listening to Separate Ways, American Trilogy and Elvis rendition of Unchained Melody and Bridge Over Troubled Water. A multi talented performer, who left us way toosoon. But, as long as Elvis'music continues to be played then his memory and legacy will forever live on.
