We're Building a Chicken Moat to Keep Them Out!

We've been working on a HUGE project and today we are sharing it with you. We installed a double deer fence (2 parallel fences) 6 feet apart around our 1 acre orchard which will also house our chickens. A huge chicken moat around our orchard. Cool, huh?

***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Good job. However one thing i'd have done is have the gates (the walk in gates) the width of your run, and open in opposite sides, so you can open them up and they block the run leaving a walk through area for you, and you don't have to worry about closing each gate behind you ... until you're done with whatever you need to do in the orchard.

So 2x 6 foot gates, making the opening 12 feet when gates are open, but it blocks the chicken run. Can change dimensions to accommodate a vehicle passing through.

Mother Earth News had an article about a chicken 🐓 run around someone's garden. It was 6-8' high, had a compost pile on the inside with chicken access and a culvert under the gate for a chicken tunnel. The garden had fruit trees and blackberries in it. Great idea and another great video from you 😊.

Chicken moat is brilliant! Should keep you from having to mow that space. Edit to add: think about putting in gates on the opposite side of your orchard. My luck never fails - I not only know Murphy, but his whole family on a first name basis. I will be in the corner farthest from the gate and there will be an emergency on the outside 10 feet away from me, but I'll have to go all the way through then around the entire fenced area to get to it.

You guys are amazing! The freeze dryer, the weed fabric and now this. This is the 3rd idea I am getting from you guys. I already have enough extra stakes and fencing to pull this off. When this is done I am going to have to start going through all your old videos to see what I have missed! :) Keep up the great work.

You two are doing a phenomenal job. I would give anything to be able to farm, Hunt, and fish again. Now I just lay here in the nursing home watching KZread videos of people hunting fishing, and farming. Sometimes it really bothers me because I’m only 37 and stuck in a nursing home.

That is a BIG project. In my experience, it is the few BIG projects that really get your blood pumping and renew your interest and energy to your overall lifestyle. If it was me and my wife, we would point to the fence every time we saw it and say to each other, "Hey, we put that fence in."

Won't hawks be able to fly in, perch on the fence, then easily kill & devour a chicken? I've got 2 huge hawks that do that daily behind my home to catch frogs between the 6ft. wood stockade fence & the chain link fence that surrounds the drainage pond. These two fences are 5-6 feet apart. Hope it doesn't happen to you & be upsetting to discover. Just wanted to share. This method absolutely works on deer crossing!!!!👍

I built a chicken moat WAYYY back in the day-around my garden , and it worked beautifully. ( I was inspired by the original article 😉). Now I put a top on mine and the chickens were totally kept safe from predators. It was 40 x 60 feet on the inside and then the second fence was 4 feet from that. I Never had to spray my garden for pests, as even though the chickens were not inside with the plants, the vast majority of of pests didn’t make it across the moat. No deer or rabbits Lots of eggs and the most I had was about 70 chickens. I had to leave it behind back in 2004 but you are inspiring me to explore this again as I retire 😀

I love that you guys are so "so do it yourself!" 💪 I honestly get a little discouraged with channels that teach self sufficiency and homesteading and give people hope that they can do all this themselves - and then they have employees that work their homestead. 🙄 I still love the knowledge they give, but it kinda feels like a lie sometimes. 🤷‍♀️

I am 82 year old widow and obviously am done farming :) but I learned so much with these new fences and fitting parts. It used to be HE## to put up fences! Plus...looks great! I agree with your decision to do your own fence instead of having it done! Farming is your business and the more money you can keep through do-it-yourself the more successful you are. (There'll be enough emergencies you have no control over that will cost you.) It is also wise to consider which tools to buy, which to rent. My first thought was to rent the post driver, but when I heard the price I too would have purchased it. You will need it enough in years to come! The double fence is interesting and it should work. You may get a few young ones in there at the beginning but they won't look for food! They will want to get out and won't do it again! Deer are smart. When we figured out their highway through our 20 acres from the forest to the open plains we learned to keep that grassy and open. They never lingered or veered off and we had twice daily the herd going through.....as the farmer's friends and a great side-show. We felt we owed that to them because we also hunted our share for meat. Thank you, I love your always interesting videos.. You are heaven-send in these times of constant tribulations.
