Watched The Towering Inferno for the umpteenth time earlier this Sunday afternoon, and when the first line hits “We may never love like this again “ I’m a blubbering wreck 😭 For a 47year old bloke, that’s an admission right there! Such a poignant song in this truly awe inspiring film 🍿

I was watching the movie last year for the first time, I am only 23 and when she came up on screen I recognized her voice from the Poseidon Adventures, which I watched, both movies, just a short time before. I stopped doing everything I did and just listened to that haunting melody right before disaster strikes. My most memorable scene of the movie.
Incredibly beautiful....
R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Maureen McGovern did that on the 1980 movie Airplane as the nun.

Una voz hermosa y muy emotiva, en 1974 , yo tenía 11 años y fui al cine a ver infierno en la torre. Y esta preciosa canción jamás se me olvidó. 💖😘
Maureen McGovern, also the vocalist for The Morning After, is a professionally training singer and these songs showcase her remarkable pipes very nicely. Brava, Maureen.

I saw this movie when I was a little kid, and I didn't realize that it was Maureen McGovern singing in this scene even though I had heard her on the radio and knew who she was. I'm so glad that you posted this movie clip, because then if you hadn't, I would never known.
It'd be a haunting song anyway, but, in context, it's REALLY haunting. The "Beyond the haze" line seems ironic. I have a tape with an orchestral version of the song, and it's great "horses" music - it conjures visions of equines running in fields. Very different from the claustrophobic feeling evoked in this movie!
Friggin fire! A++
No CGI. Just good old fashioned acting directing and production sets with great models not to mention the soundtrack by John Williams with Maureen McGovern
Pretty impressive film to debut in as an actress.

Yes. Later, in the film, one of the characters notes that at least all the women are safe. She must have been evacuated off-screen or was just hired to sing a couple of songs and left before the fire got out of control. (When Duncan goes to the stage and asks the band to stop playing, she's nowhere to be seen.)

@@davidfrost2819 The lady who knocks the panel out of the elevator is a blonde with long hair, but she's wearing a long black dress--not the blue over brown outfit Maureen's shown singing in. (Yes, I'm that big of a geek...) It's more than likely that Maureen and the band shot their one scene and then were done filming. It's even more likely that the filmmakers never imagined we'd be obsessing over details like this more than 45 years later!
There is irony in this song's lyrics. It foreshadows the fire that is about to occur, which will destroy the romances that are occurring.
They should have let her sang the whole freaking song!!!

They never let her sing this song nor The Morning After at the academy awards. She sang TMA as a unexpected hit after the movie’s release and demand for a radio single. I can’t find any live recording of We May Never by Maureen. Many of her Lp’s didn’t even include it. She sang the song, sang it on film. Was it just much a variation of Poseidon?
@misterlyle.
3 жыл бұрын
The track for the theme song featured in the _The Towering Inferno_ was included in a limited release soundtrack a number of years ago. It sounds like a live recording, and it is much longer than what is included in the film. The studio version with full orchestration was included on the original soundtrack LP, back in the 1970s. As for the Academy Awards, since Maureen McGovern's first song "The Morning After" became a hit after that song won the Oscar, it is likely that the producers opted for a more established singer to perform, rather than an unknown. Connie Stevens performed that song from _The Poseidon Adventure_ for the Academy Awards show in 1973.

It's been a long time since I saw the movie but I recall that near the end all the women had been evacuated from the Promenade Room. I'm not positive but Maureen McGovern may have appeared in a later scene among the people who were getting to safety though I don't recall a specific moment in which she's seen getting away from the Glass Tower.
