    I did a similar effect. I took a $7 kids swimming pool, filled it with water, placed dollar store black foam board half way around and then shot the entire pool full of spray fog. Then I pulled a weathered model boat across the pool via fishing line. The effect was pretty cool. Smoke definitely does make the difference. I may have to try some of these techniques. Fantastic video!

  • @SmallerLives

    @SmallerLives

    A lot of people on channels with similar themes to this one talk about CG as though we're still living in 1986. CG is absolutely PHENOMENAL at so many things that practical effects cannot possibly hope to recreate. To say that practical is 'so much better than CG' is just rubbish. Yes, practical is much, much better than terrible CG, but that goes both ways. The guys from InCamera have spoken very positively about CG in some of their other videos so this comment is not intended as a dig at them in any way!! Practical is obviously a big thing for them, but they are certainly living in the 21st Century :-) And yes, you still need to have a bit of a brain on you to make this stuff work, CG or not.

    I have to echo Daniel Broadway. It's huge that you skillfully teach the skills involved. However, you also spell out where we can "cut corners" to save time, money and resources. The concept of "dressing to the camera" is a game changer. It's a simple idea, but clearly rooted in experience. Thanks for this!

    Apparently for filming "The Abyss" the dry-for-wet mas made consistent by using a light-meter and a light and aiming for the same light-value when "smoking up" for each shot. I thought that was pretty clever.

    I think it's fantastic how it's all done with pocket cinema cermas! I had purchased the original version of the BMPCC (1080p) a couple years back, only for the 4K version to be announced 6 months later. How annoying!

    Brilliant work guys :) If you had the suspension wires thus from the sub to the boom: \ / rather than | | , then I think the sub wouldn't be so prone to spinning/wobbling around. Just a thought. Amazing results :)

    Amazing, absolutely amazing. Love it! Have you guys tried something like Film Convert to add a little bit of a softer film look to your shots? They're very good as they are, but maybe it would bring out a little bit more of that realistic light rollof, that's inherent to filming with practical models and sets. I have a feeling you guys would film on 35mm if you could. You're using Black Magic Cameras, so it would be no problem to properly simulate film stock.

    @@InCameraTV Exactly, it's difficult enough to get something completed. Especially on this scale with making-of, tutorials etc. I can run some free tests for you if you want. Would gladly help out artists, that keep the tradition of practical FX alive. Just shoot me a mail with some ungraded stills to the business email on my channel and I see what I can come up with.

    Your Sub Commander is a genius with his non verbal expressions. 😀 Near the start of your episode you mentioned about a focus thingie. That's how technical I am. may I ask what options I have to focus a manual Sirius anamorphic lens that I bought second-hand to mess around with? It will go on a Panasonic GH5 and a smallrigg cage. Your episode are inspiring me to go well beyond my skill level, bank ballance and comfort zone. But its fun playing with new toys.
