    Actually, human hair, as an alternative for horsetail is possible. Back in 2013, here in the Philippines, a hair conditioner brand "Cream Silk" tried to prove their product using human hair instead of horsetail. They sponsored an event and even hired the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra to play for their "Cream Silk Hair Sonata" event, and became the world's first [Human] Hair Symphony Orchestra.

    It would be more prone to sticking on the wound strings especially on the base bar side with the heavier windings and regardless of that would wear through faster. Ick factor... consider that horse hair comes from what is basically a fly swatter which you are rubbing on your strings. Best!

    I am a retired equine library curator and love violin music. I’ve always been curious what differences in sound might be made depending on the breed of horse, the gender of horse, their age, and the color of the tail hair. Some horses have quite wavy hair, while others have quite straight hair. Certain horses have very coarse hair while others have fine hair. It doesn’t make sense to me that there are no differences in sound. I had neighbors who owned a music store and I asked him where tail hair was sourced for violin bows and they told me from horses sent to slaughter. Sad about that. It also means what musicians might get could be vastly different. Of course tail hair could be obtained from living horses which to me would be preferable. Before I retired I wanted to write to Itzak Perlman to ask if he would be interested in testing various horse tail hair to see what produced the best sound, but I never got my courage up enough to write to him. However I have wondered for years about all the expense and study is put into selecting superb violins but yet where is the study regarding the quality of the horse tail hair used in bows?

  • @MissTwoSetEncyclopedia

    @MissTwoSetEncyclopedia

    I remember reading that the hair used for bows usually come from horses living in very cold climate (like Siberia or Mongolia) because their hair is thicker and stronger. Also, if I'm not mistaken, violinists, violists and cellists tend to use white hair while bassists prefer black hair, which is more coarse.

    I have often wondered the same, because the knackeries in my city sell horse tails to people to make into false tails (for showing and sometimes dressage) but apparently they never get approached to sell them for violin bows. (I know it's a macabre subject, but ex-racehorses get "retired" in the thousands here each year, so people have found various ways to make use of the resulting "materials" and fake tails is one of them...)

    the emotional rollercoaster i went through from > mildly creeped out at the concept of a human hair bow > terrified that eddy might lose a finger > melting into a happy puddle during the end demonstration god i will never get tired of just hearing you guys play;-; 10/10 video !!! this felt like more of a ha ha silly video idea at the start but after everything yall have a humain hair bow now??? that's kinda really cool????

    you need to comb from the end of the hair first and go upwards little by little, so you don't get stuck and don't break the hair.

    Brett - horses also have manes on their neck that can grow very long depending on breeding. Also - doesn’t bleaching weaken the hair? Wouldn’t you just want to clarify shampoo it with a cleanser that leaves no residue? I can’t imagine a human hair bow is going to be very long lasting. Also, no mention is made of the direction of the cuticle on the hair . does that have any bearing on the sound?
