Stevie says in an Interview... "I remember the night I wrote 'Dreams.' I walked in and handed a cassette of the song to Lindsey. It was a rough take, just me singing solo and playing piano. Even though he was mad with me at the time, Lindsey played it and then looked up at me and smiled. What was going on between us was sad. We were couples who couldn't make it through. But, as musicians, we still respected each other - and we got some brilliant songs out of it."

This song is actually the break-up song that she wrote to him. Of course, he countered with Go Your Own Way. Landslide is a song that is about their relationship but THIS song in THE song she wrote to him. She is my IDOL! I ABSOLUTELY ADORE HER SO MUCH! I've seen FM in concert twice and Stevie (solo) once for my birthday back in 2016 in Chicago. She was PHENOMONAL! I cried throughout the whole concert. Lindsey and Stevie & John and Christine's relationships all ended around the same time, and then Stevie had a year long fling with Mick (drummer). The whole Rumors album was about the whole mess that the band was going through. Not just Lindsey and Stevie. It is still one of the best rock albums in rock history. FM is my favorite rock band ever as well. Such a great band!

This was the definitive song of the 'new' Fleetwood Mac. From an incredibly important British rock/blues band to an American and British, male and female collaboration creating a sound and style that the world was ready for. FM were iconoclastic. I love the warm tones in their music. The relationship between Lindsay and Stevie broke up because she had an affair. I saw an interview with them a couple of years ago and they talked at length about the break up. Stevie said she didn't want to break up and tried for years to get back with him, she then pause, looked him in the eyes and said she was so sorry for the affair and the way she hurt him. His response blew me away. He told her he waited years for her to say she was sorry and that was all he wanted, and he would have taken her back, but now it was too late because he had moved on and has a wife and family he loves very much, and Stevie just looked heart broken.

"Gypsy" is most definitely worth a listen! But you really can't go wrong with anything Stevie does. Jay my music teacher would occasionally put on different eras of music to illustrate the point that he was making that day. My high school was a jr/sr high combined in one building and my years there were 1980-1986. So these were the old vinyl 45's and sometimes the 33 1/3rd albums. Some of it was from the 50's and 60's and some were more current at the time. It's great that you are sharing the great music of the past with a new generation. It makes me curious if any of your students have subscribed to join in your journey of discovery.

The Rumors album was a record setting album, sell 10 million copies in the first month. The success of the album didn't come from one or two or even three hits, the entire was incredible! Especially when you consider all the negative effects going on within the band. Every song to me was a hit, the same as Hotel California album for Eagles. It was the greatest time musically, to be a teenager or early 20s from 1975 to 1981. And Fleetwood Mac was a huge part of that time.

What you need to remember is Fleetwood Mac were originally a British blues rock band formed by Peter Green, who was one of the best blues guitarists and there were great emotional trauma even before Stevie even joined the band. Some of the original fleetwood Mac’s best songs include Man of the World, Albatross (an instrumental), Black Magic Woman, Oh Well and Green Manalishi.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again...part of what makes Fleetwood Mac so darn amazing is that they have a DEEP bench of talent. When you have multiple song writers and three amazing lead singers in your band, you can change things up and take your sound into a multitude of directions. I LOVE Stevie, but my favorite (of a LONG list of favorites) Fleetwood Mac song is "Songbird" sung by Christine McVie. She is just as great as Stevie in her own ways. Definitely react to "Songbird" please! =)

Let's not forget that Lindsey Buckingham wrote 'Go Your Own Way' FIRST about their break-up and had Stevie sing it. He was having a rough time over the break-up and writing that song helped him move forward. 'Dreams' was Stevie's response to that song. So, as badass as Stevie is, Lindsey did it first. Fun fact: Stevie also had an affair with Mick Fleetwood while she was in a relationship with Don Henley (The Eagles) and Mick was married to Jenny Boyd. Jenny is sisters with Pattie Boyd who was married to George Harrison (The Beatles) and later, Eric Clapton. Pattie inspired some amazing songs from those two.....'Something' by Harrison, 'Layla' and 'Wonderful Tonight' by Clapton.....to name a few.

I am the Stevie Nicks fan of life, but she definitely plays down the venom she was capable of in her songs lol. She has often said Dreams was her hopeful, philosophical version of the Buckingham breakup while he wrote Go Your Own Way from a place of anger. The thing is that Stevie's melodies are so dreamy (pun intended!) that they often mask the rage underneath. The lyrics of Dreams are just as vicious as Buckingham's in Go Your Own Way, just more subtle. Amber, you kind of hit it: She is essentially damning him to a life of loneliness and madness that he'll never be able to escape, even in his dreams. And "women they will come and go/when the rain washes you clean" is a swipe at Buckingham being dirty & jumping from woman to woman (many of whom were likely groupies). Silver Springs is the same - it's such a pretty melody it's easy to forget she's calling him out to his face for cheating on her, and then casting a spell to keep him haunted by her memory & voice forever!!! Stevie was an absolute KILLER - she just did it with beautiful music to disguise the blade of her pen! xoxo P.S. - I am a relatively new subscriber and am OBSEESSED with your reactions. You are both so much fun!

The Fleetwood Mac lineup from 1975 to 1987 featured three phenomenal singers & songwriters in Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and Christine McVie. They could harmonize like nobody's business. During the recording of Rumors, not only were Stevie & Lindsey breaking up, but Christine and (bassist) John McVie were heading for divorce. All that turmoil made for a legendary album. While "Dreams" was their only US number 1 song, most of their hits were written by Christine McVie. Check out "You Make Loving Fun, " "Over My Head," and "Songbird." More great ones from Stevie, "Gypsy," "Sara," "Seven Wonders." And from Lindsey "Second Hand News," "Monday Morning," and "Go Your Own Way" Stevie & Lindsey didn't join the band until 1974, but the Mac's origins go back to 1967. You owe it to yourselves to check out some of their songs from the Peter Green (founding guitarist) era. Including "Albatross," "Oh Well," and "Green Manalishi." But there's lots of great ones. -JR in Miami

The live version of Silver Springs from the Dance is great. Live versions of 'Sister of the Moon' and 'Gold Dust Woman' kick as well. Stevie Nicks wrote the song in early 1976. She said, "One day when I wasn't required in the main studio, I took a Fender Rhodes piano and went into another studio that was said to belong to Sly Stone, of Sly and the Family Stone. It was a black-and-red room, with a sunken pit in the middle where there was a piano, and a big black-velvet bed with Victorian drapes. I sat down on the bed with my keyboard in front of me, I found a drum pattern, switched my little cassette player on and wrote 'Dreams' in about 10 minutes. Right away I liked the fact that I was doing something with a dance beat, because that made it a little unusual for me." Buckingham "fashioned three sections out of identical chords, making each section sound completely different. He created the impression that there's a thread running through the whole thing."

Not many better than watching Lindsay and Stevie sing angrily at each other with hose icy stares in Go Your Own Way. I think it is probably their best “break up song”. When Stevie & Lindsay did the harmonies in studio (especially with this song), they did them in one small room facing each other (the tape machine they nicknamed "Jaws" was unreliable for multiple dubbing). Imagine all the disdain they had for each other, and had to sing those lyrics, gathered around one microphone facing each other- in harmony. Nicks and Buckingham while they were in a band called Fritz opened for Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. Stevie Nicks attributes her stage persona to what she learned from those two. Imagine what Fleetwood Mac would look like without that influence.

Rooms on Fire is a great Stevie solo song. When Fleetwood Mac broke up Stevie tried to join Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Tom told her "there are no girls in the Heartbreakers." But he wrote her a song and performed it with her. It is called Stop Dragging My Heart Around

this song is all vibe, atmosphere - you can hear the longing and the loneliness in not just stevie's vocal but the haunting wail of lindsey's guitar. i've said it before, as much as i love stevie, it's lindsey's brilliant arranging and production whilst developing the songs that make these masterful. and lindsey never gets enough credit for creating FM's signature sound. and yes, this was from RUMOURS and is sort of a response to lindsey's song "go your own way" as it's been said that stevie left lindsey. these 2 songs are forever paired. "GYPSY" is your next reaction - a MUST - one of my 2 fav stevie FM songs EVER ("SARA" is the other - haunting and beautiful ❤)
