i always wear a big wide-brim hat outside so my skin wont age and i can work all day without sunburn. i also wear arm sleeves (to cover wrists) and long socks (to cover ankles) and gloves to cover up 100% of skin. of course, i get full sun on 70% of my skin for 10min (not on my face as that would age my face) at high noon each day (so i can get maximum sunlight in the minimum amount of time) for the many benefits of short-term sunlight on skin

I remember the first time I invested in clematis and vining food for my 36 clematis plants. I knew it was going to be expensive but I wanted to see if it made a difference. Oh boy, it did! The reward of beautiful blooms was so worth the cost. I found even doing it once during the season was so helpful. I do use Proven Winners fertilizer on my annuals, also worth it. Although I use it weekly, I would think that if used every other week it would reduce the cost and still help keep flowers looking great. Finally, I use Heirloom Rose's liquid fish emulsion fertilizer on my potted roses. They bloom beautifully. I tend to order some of these supplies in the winter when I am not spending money on plants in an effort to even out the costs over a longer period of time.

Hi, how often do you use the liquid fish emulsion fertilizer on your potted roses? Mine are not doing so good and are covered on rust. I just got them this year and I fertilized them when I first plant them on the pots and I have applied just once nem oil to help with the rust problem but I think maybe what need is to defoliate them completely to get rid of the rust, but I am afraid I may kill them. I am new with roses… Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate it, thank you, have a great day!

I make some coffee and sit and enjoy watching your video. We are on three acres in Oregon. The property is right on the edge of forest land, so our biggest challenge is trying to maintain the constant grown. So, my montra is that "I'm doing my best to cut back the forest". Boy, that has proven to be a huge task. Little by little I'm carving out some garden spaces. So far, I have a shade garden and a sun garden. Since it's all new, it will take some time to fill in the spaces! Love your energy and the fun things you share!

Using compost is a great idea too; thank you for your suggestions. I have roses on pots on the hillside of my garden and they are not doing so good, I just got them this year and they are covered on rust, I applied nem oil once but I think I need to apply more. I fertilized them when I first plant them on the pots, but I think I am going to need to buy more fertilizer to help them recover sooner, wish me luck! Have a great day!

What fertilizer did you use before you worked for Proven Winners?

When it comes to fertilizing in the garden dirt when planting, there is some required amounts which is stated on the label. For me, I usually don't measure and make sure that I mix well with the dirt that is in the hole that I am planting in. By mixing you will make sure that it will not burn the roots. As well I usually fertilize from the top of the dirt after planting then I make sure that it is added to my fertilize Monday. Hope that helps.

I shop at Proven Winners Direct, a website that sells all Proven Winners plants etc. They have the AquaPot inserts in stock. These are the inserts that you can put into your own pot and make it self-catering. You just have to make sure your pot is big enough. Love your show, from hot humid N. Alabama

Hi Janey. I recently bought a hat from SunGrubbies. I actually wear an extra large so the hats you offer aren’t large enough for my head. 😂. I’m not mad at it though. I’m actually a small person at only 4’11” so the hat you have would overwhelm my stature. I bought one with a smaller brim. I’m just grateful you shared the website with us. I finally have a gardening hat that fits!

I love my sungrubbies hats. Not only do I have a melon head I have thick hair. I gave up on finding hats to fit me. I have the outrigger style for the garden and I always pack my casual travel hat in my suitcase for just in case moments. Even if to just visit family. It flattens to nothing.

Hi Janey, I had a hat like yours but I found one that I prefer. It’s a Tropical Trends hat that is lighter weight and has air holes toward the top so that it stays cool. I’m surprised that you didn’t ask Martha about silkies. She has a good video on taking care of chickens. I was wondering if your office has a gutter on the Vego bed side? In one of your videos the soil in the bed next to the building looked very wet. I think it would look nice to have stair step risers on either side of your office door to give your pots some height.

I use the slow release in the spring, then the "weekly" fertilizer only once every 2-3 weeks, works great and costs a lot less. PW brand is great, but you can find much more affordable options.
