Yeah, I think the sole of the sock is felting and, therefore, shrinking and, therefore, eating up some of the leg length. One way to avoid would be superwash. Or knitting a longer foot in the knowledge it will felt up and shrink with wear. Also, cut half the plies away from each strand before you splice them together so that, for the length of the join, you keep the same number of plies that are in the rest of the yarn x

In my experience, I only use sock yarn that has superwash wool and nylon. The superwash makes sure they don’t felt, and the nylon for durability. 100% wool socks feel cosy, but they will felt and lose their structure quickly. I spend too much time knitting socks for them to be useless so quickly. I still have and wear socks I knit over 20 years ago.

@@AliMakesEverything A while ago Rebecca Clow mentioned on her podcast (I forget which episode) that she really liked making socks using non-superwash sock yarn, which I think was 75% regular wool and 25% nylon. You could try that and that way you'd have the durability from the nylon, but also using non-superwash?

At least half of my knitting knowledge is from either Saint Roxanne Richardson or Saint Suzanne Bryan. They are both so amazing at making pro-tips so doable for us "still learning" knitters down here on Earth. That sunny egg-yolk yellow is so gorgeous on you! I can't wait to see the FO! So odd about those socks. I'm really curious to know how the fish lips kiss works over time.

Hi!!!! Quick interjection… re: WET splicing, to get the same yarn size you need to draft the fiber out a bit from each end of yarn before wetting and rubbing it together. Cannot help with that ick sensation though. It’s OKAY to weave in ends. Sometimes I splice, sometimes I knit my ends in as I go, sometimes I weave them in at the end. Depends on the project (likelihood I’ll need to frog to make adjustments) and just my mood in the moment. Okay… back to the video.

so sorry to hear of the problems you’re having with your dads socks. My husband loves a long leg on his hand knit socks too, and to make sure he has the fit and the cozy, I knit him DK weight socks with super wash merino/nylon . He wears these in boots with a lot of walking, and sweating and has not had any issues with the socks getting misshapen. He says they’re the only socks that keep his feet warm when he’s in sub 0 conditions. Alternatively, you could try adding some knit in elastic into your non super wash socks. It’s so thin that it won’t change your gauge, but will add some structure to the fabric. Good luck Ali!

As already many have said ❤ If you want a woolly sock that is going to be used in a boot, you need a sock yarn that is re-enforced with nylon or some other strong fiber. Blend i use is usually 75%wool/25%nylon. Or 80/20. 100% wool is good for night socks when you sleep or for felting. some breeds or yarns don't felt though. The internet will know better than me. But if you really want to knit pure wool which is going to felt and you know it, just do bigger socks and wash them so you'll get a felted sock to give.. as you were planning..

If you want to avoid nylon in your Dad’s socks, you could try the Onion brand sock yarn. It’s 70% superwash wool, 30% nettle fiber. It’s made in Denmark, with sustainability in mind. Nettle fiber is a very strong plant fiber and combining it with superwash wool means that you get a durable, soft, natural fiber sock without the use of nylon.

So if it is 4ply, untwist it and cut 2 plies off, do the same for other end of yarn at the same lenght and then sp*t splice it together. I usually can't even tell where the joint is.

I would mid progress block my WIP! And I would make tie or adjustable straps. Straps stretching is a potential issue either way with straps, regardless of if you are doing bottom up, top down, waist shaping, etc. Elastic inserted into the straps, or I've even ran a length of yarn tied to the front, strung into the double knit straps and then tied to the back to anchor and reduce stretching. I think the fact that you have clear booby pockets and are working with the heavier end of the yarn first would make adding waist shaping that stays proportionally in the correct spot easier. Knit until you are getting close to where you have started waist shaping in your example knit. Block. Once dry maybe even hang it a bit to simulate gravity from wearing. Then take gauge measurements and do all the maths for when to start, how many rows, how many decreases, etc.

To back up the general consensus, the sock is felting because the wool is non-superwash (basically, if it’s a yarn you can wet-splice it’s probably not going to be very good for socks). I would at the very least use superwash wool (although that will still felt a little bit) or superwash wool with nylon and knit the foot a few centimetres longer than it needs to be. I want to note here that a little bit of felting in a sock can be good because it increases durability and warmth. But maybe not that much. Also, your cardigan looks *amazing*!

If he’s wearing the same socks all week and you are using 100% wool he is definitely felting his socks inside his boot 😂 If you don’t want to use nylon, another fiber that will help in this case is silk. Handmade socks for stretch out unlike commercial socks. I would recommend knitting his socks a little tighter to help combat that. I find that I like 1.5” of negative ease in my socks vs the standard 1”.

Okay i might be the one weirdo but i prefer the shadow wrap heel over the fishlips kiss heel. It's a lot more intuitive for ne. I do use her fitting notes to do shortrow heels for friends and family but as soon as the shortrows start I go back to shadow wrap. Hey brownberry has a free tutorial on it - I highly recommend her how to knit socks series Also, I like the fit of heel flap and gusset when I knit for myself, because it fits the rise of my foot much better and its got some reinforcement with the slip stitch heel. Its more fiddly because it took me a bit to figure out the right combo to get the right amount of negative ease, but then i took a class with Kate Atherley and bought her book, so now I'm golden. Shes a Canadian teacher that taught out of yarns untangled in Kensington for a while. Okay back to the episode

In terms of sock fits - the slipping makes me think the sock is too loose across the instep. I would knit a smaller circumference with a heel flap and gusset to get that nonslip fit. Your dad sounds knit worthy enough that he deserves to have his own measurements for custom socks. In general, you want to knit to a negative 10% ease both in terms of circumference and length (the Kate Atherley book Custom fit Socks has explanations! It also has a sock recipe for any gauge and tables like the Amy Herzog book. In terms of sock yarn options - you may want to look for a silk wool blend! I also saw someone with a non superwash wool and tencel (a wood pulp fibre that uses a closed chemical loop) blend at Knit City - I think Coates and Co? that might also work.

I've definitely had similar sock issues before and it's mainly the type of yarn you use that causes it. I've found that the best way to avoid it is using a more suitable yarn (something with nylon, more 'rougher', and tightly spun instead of a woolen spun and airy yarn). Either way I would recommend knitting your socks at least six centimeters longer on both the foot and the leg if you want to keep using non-superwash

I think your right about "leg is foot". It was probably caused by the combination of moisture (sweat) and agitation that will cause felting, ie shrinking. As the leg moved down to the heel it continued to felt, leaving the top part stable. Interesting. Solving this problem??? I don't like suggesting a super. Maybe if you care to make a deep dive into sheep breeds, there are some breeds that are less likely to felt. Do you know any spinners? It might be fun to partner up and experiment.

Ooh the breeds idea is interesting! I'm reluctant to lose the lanolin benefits by switching to a superwash so maybe it's time for me to get researching!

I wonder if you are using 100% wool only? It's typically recommended to use nylon in socks. So I wonder if you could hold a strand of nylon with your wool socks.

I agree about the nylon. Or if you prefer to use a natural fabric, holding a strand of silk is a (pricier) option.

It is 100% wool-does nylon help with preventing felting? I know it's good for durability 🤔
