I so appreciate hearing the numbers as far as cost to knit and cost per wear for your sweaters, as I've been waffling about investing the time and money into starting to knit garments for myself and this has just made it seem that little bit more approachable. So thank you! Also I think you can totally wear your Magnolia Bloom sweater around the house, turn off the heating because it's so warm, and then knock those heat cost savings off the cost of the sweater!!

Ahaha. Oh god. Your sleeve story! For the record, what you did probably did result in it looking more even than trying to fix it would have, but yes, there's an easy way to fix what you describe, often with a crochet hook. You figure out which loose loop of yarn should be the highest row of stitches. You reknit that or redo it with a crochet hook. Then the next loose loop of yarn. Then the next. If it's a material that will block well, the result can still come out looking fairly even if you're careful. It's the same concept as "laddering down" to fix a mistake except on a grand scale. Love the art teacher aesthetic and that you found a pattern not listed on ravelry!

If you want more high-level theory stuff, I'd watch Roxanne Richardson in addition to Nimble Needles and Very Pink Knits. Also... I wonder if you might enjoy the big names of the 90s that nobody talks about today like Kaffe Fassett. Some of the specific designs might feel dated to you, but the bonkers crazy intarsia color-splosion is very much in the art/kindergarten teacher vein in a way that many recent designs are not.

I also got here through the algorithm, and I love your vibe! WAK-wool is not the most durable, even for other projects than socks ;-) but the sock hole is not their fault per sé. Wool, especially bulky wool like that, is not meant to be used for socks because it's not strong enough. The percentage of nylon in sock yarn is to make it stronger because there is a lot of stress on socks. Btw I also almost fell for the WAK thing, I think they have a way of photographing their yarns and choosing their colours that makes them look appealing. The only thing that 'saved' me at the time was that they were pretty expensive for what they offered compared to other yarn here in Europe, and then knowing other knitters who kindly pointed out how their yarn/materials/patterns usually are not great quality.

Thank you so much, new knitting friend! 😄 It's so funny, I have a tendency to be a perfectionist too, and am often hesitant to try something I don't think I'll be good at. There's something about knitting though that's different for me I think because no matter what you mess up, there's kind of always a way to fix it. Even if, in the worst case scenario, you have to frog the whole thing and start over, you can STILL end up with a (near) perfect garment in the end if you just keep figuring out how to fix your mistakes which is like a safe space for my perfectionism to tip toe into uncharted waters while still coming out looking good 😂

Finishing the SANDNES GARN Amy Slipover and then starting the Magnolia Bloom sweater with HOLTS GARN yarn I bought at the Red Mitten in St Thomas. I tend to buy way too much yarn but hopefully there’s enough yarn left over that I can make a few Gifty things….. that’s the theory … I am a teeny bit scared after watching your tale of woe…but your Magnolia Bloom sweater is gorgeous so there is a happy ending! Perseverance is the cornerstone of my knitting journey! Can’t wait to hear more! Thanks!

Funny you say that. I do that because I am not good at following patterns, so I end up trying to figure out the logic of a sweater on my own. I end up frogging A LOT!

Fascinating and fun episode! You had me laughing like crazy and so impressed with your perseverance and learning curve. I gotta say I gasped and covered my mouth when you gave the total cost if that lovely bobble sweater-holy crap girl-glad you figured out to just use a larger needle! Lol! I have to say, the urge to reach through the screen, grab your sweaters and take out my gleaner (yes, buy a gleaner- not expensive and no batteries needed). I still use an electric one too for some knits-both are great investments. I love the cost per wear analysis and appreciate quoting our sad Canadian costs as well as the lovely low US costs.

In the future for sock knitting if you want more sturdy socks tighter knitting on smaller needles and plyed yarn. Petite wool is unplyed and it doesn’t wear as well in high wear areas like feet!

I find using a sweater stone for depilliing works a treat. I especially like it for items made with a fluffy yarn, such as a mohair, that I don't necessarily want to shave. Hope this helps and I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos in the future.

Oh my gosh I love the way your brain works (mine is similar when it comes to knitting! And that I am not the only person to go crazy sampling colors on yarn and creating potential colorwork layouts in photoshop haha). And it was so joyful, and so relatable, going through all of your early knits. When I look through mine there's absolutely something learned with each one lol.

To depill : scissors. Other tools pull on the fibers, priming for more pilling. For the red strappy top, you could take the time to get them Just Right and sew them together in place. And then it’s just a regular top. Granted it’ll be a bit more difficult to store folded. I’ve been knitting for a few years now, but I don’t have much time to knit so I haven’t made a lot of things. Also I like to design what I knit and it’s a slow process (swatches+tests+calculations etc). But I really like what I have knit. thank you for the thoroughness and the honesty. very enjoyable content :) Oh and you know Hannah Louise Poston 💚 She’s such an inspiration.

You’re really skilled, amazing that you only started knitting last year, love the willingness to get stuck in. I was similar when I started, I didn’t pay any attention to beginner levels or what people said beginners should knit but I haven’t finished a garment yet and haven’t got round to intarsia so I’m inspired! No shade to anyone but I don’t think I’ve sat through a whole “what I knit in [year] video” because I just skip to see if there are any patterns I want to knit (please tell me someone else does this 😂) but time has passed and I’m still here so I’m going to subscribe.

Really enjoyed your podcast! I love making hand knit socks. Mine have been out of fingering and dk yarn with some nylon content in them to help with the wear. You make me want to try knitting a pair of reading socks out of thicker wool yarn that probably wouldn’t have nylon. I think the sock stop prevents you from slipping and falling while walking in your socks more than it will help with wear. Have you considered holding a thread of nylon with the heavier weight yarn? It might be worth trying with a bulky weight yarn particularly with one that is not a single.

Thanks so much for watching! I hadn’t considered holding a bit of nylon with heavier yarn-I would’ve guessed then the heavy yarn would still wear through and you’d just be left with sparse nylon threads but it sounds like maybe that’s not the case? 🧐 Interesting!

I’m really enjoying this episode. On the intarsia sweater you might be able to just crochet a round of cinnamon on the collar.

I think that the lighter colour in silk mohair is because silk does not take the dye as well as mohair. A similar thing happens with cotton yarn and bamboo.

Just found your podcast and am catching up on previous episodes. May I suggest you try to add a navy mohair or suri to your blue "navy yarn." You'd be surprised how it will change the main color so that you actually like it. I really feel for you having to keep ordering more yarn....yikes. Maybe your grandma could help you figure it out more accurately before you actually push the purchase button. Good luck with the bright blue yarn. I have to say you are fun to watch and listen to. @@AliMakesEverything For silk mohair, check out Knitting for Olive, Sandnes Garn, Isager(one of the softest and tends to have matching core). Drops Kid Silk is more economical than most, but I don't mind it. Some colors are scratchier than others, though.

You probably already know this now, but single ply yarn pills more than double ply. Someone already mentioned that you need yarn with some nylon to make socks that are stronger 😀

Question for ya! You had to reknit body and sleeve of your magnolia bloom sweater. Ive heard that mohair is a pain when it comes to frogging or tinking back. What was that like for you? Also that's a good point. I was already thinking about knitting fingering weight garments for sake of my wrists, but have put it off. I thought it woulf be more expensive because you need more yarn to cover the size of sweater. But if weight is different, that should impact cost. And now im super motivated to give it a try!

I don’t remember that one being terrible to frog but it’s possible I just repressed it 😂 I think the combo of the large gauge and the Isager Silk Mohair being so smooth made it not bad though. When I had to frog a section of my Barnsley sweater with the Knitting for Olive mohair, though, that was a whole other thing 🫠

Thanks Carolyn! 😊 I use an iPhone app called Stylebook-I’ve been using it for years, before I started knitting, first because I’m just a nerd and love data about anything but second because it keeps me thinking about my wardrobe so it stays intentional and well-curated, and over time it’s helped me get a much better handle on what kinds of things I actually get good wear out of so I can make wiser purchasing choices 😄

Have you tried Briggs and Little yarn? It is a bit rustic ,very sturdy , and it’s a Canadian company. All the people who rely on knitwear in their lives for warmth and safety love it. They make a worsted weight wool with 20% nylon for bulky socks. I bought some but haven’t made them yet.

I am curious about why you got charged duty on one order and not the other from Knitting for Olive. Is there a cost limit where duty starts or did the regulations change? Enquiring minds…

I think there’s a cost threshold somewhere-my first order was just under €100 and the second was €165! Somewhere in between there they must start looking more closely 😅

Also. Dont block ribbing. And if your sleeves grow too long, don't block them. Get a damp tea towel and an iron and press gently. Start very gentle and dont get aggressive vif you dont need to. Wet blocking is risky time consuming and not usually necessarily.

IMHO wet blocking is unwieldy and rusky for garments full stop. If you've ever wrestled a wet sweater out of a basin you'll. Know why. And given that the damp tea towel method works so well there really is no need. Put it this way. If you steam press and your sweater looks good, why go through the hassle? Generations of Scots and Irish knitters have lived without wet blocking.
