They’re just ripping off vocaloids and vocaloid songs.

The idea of Vocaloid existed back in 1999-2003 and came out in 2004, so vocal synthesis for singing isn't a new idea. Hatsune Miku, the face of Vocaloid, was released by Crypton Future Media back in 2007, and was followed up by Megurine Luka, and Kagamine Rin/Len. Meiko and Kaito were released before Miku, but they didn't get much success. Miku's appearance is so appealing because of her futuristic look and eye catching hair, as well as boasting an adorable feminine voice, so although her price tag is expensive, because of her popularity and public domain status, she is able to be used to make money quickly as producers can use her to make songs, get them licensed and go through all those processes. Vocaloids are also generally loved because of the flexibility of their software and character. Polar, a metaverse born singer, has none of these attributes that Miku has. No one can buy and make music with Polar, her design is unappealing and in a way scary because of the unrealistic proportions. She is not some genius idea as Vocaloid was, and her voice sounds very generic. Another thing is the songs themselves, with so many ways to tune in Vocaloid, with so many different Vocaloids, you get tons of different songs that all sound different, not because they are all different genres, but even with only Miku songs, you get the robotic, deep, raspy, cute, or high pitched Miku in all songs, which also all tell stories in a way. Polar was created as a money grab. She will sound the same, her songs will never be anything valuable, her appearance will always be ugly. Nothing will save her. I'm totally going back to my x0o0x_, Hiiragi Kirai, and guchiry. Polar sucks.

It seems she gets like 7k views per vid on tik tok. That is AWFUL considering she supposedly has millions of followers. Not even 1% of her "fans" watch her video, which makes sense when you can fake followers, but it makes her look really bad. The awkward first gen iphone talking tom level animations definitely don't help. The only pro is that I like her mask. I love visual synthesizers, aside from that... hard pass.

Another problem is the fact that there's no individual underneath Polar. Since there's no company that makes all the vocaloid music, but it's instead individuals, you can actually connect with the real person who express what they want through vocaloids. People who say that Vocaloid is corporate garbage can pack their things and leave immediately. This is 100% companies trying to get the attention from young people after seeing the success of Vocaloid; but fail to see the importance of connection. We can already see this in the way Polar talks in the interviews. Hatsune Miku is largely shaped by the community, where this is just censored corporate money schemes.

Miku and the other Vocaloids have such reputation in the public because people wanted to share it, not because they were riding the algorithm but there's a genuine interest to share and craft which is a true backbone for growth! This is just 10 steps backwards. In fact, if anything this reminds me of those creepy channels from 2017 where you had nursery rhymes with cheap bottom of the barrel animation, performing whatever was popular at the time, it had eerily similar production value with all this cheap mocap and all that. Why did ABBA do a hologram concert? Do they think that Vocaloid concerts didn’t have anything to do with that…… like Miku already had concerts with Lady Gaga. MMD has been a thing and when I was playing VRchat there were already a ton of models and even unity extensions made to support MMD models in unity…. Its not like multiple producers died an early death but were so driven to produce music that they drove miku’s popularity before they did. Its not like the western media when Miku first cane to the US was saying she was fake… Miku is voiced by a real person with lyrics written by real people and midi programmed/composed by real people. It gas never been a magic AI process and only recently are there some Vocaloid offshoot programs that use neural networks to learn how to sing. Its always been about being able to be more real because Miku has +1 charisma because she’s designed to be cute. Crypton just made her cute so she would sell, but the community used her as a mask to make music thats too edgy for them to make otherwise with a huge range of genres and topics. You cant build a community like that with the same struts as influencers or human pop stars, the peppers ghost concerts are just the icing on the cake. A community like Vocaloid/Vocal synth is built with the true thoughts of people shared around the world, with as Mary pop pins puts it a spoon ful of sugar helps people accept it long enough to listen to the idea, or for a few people to just appreciate the character for the cuteness only. Its not like other people dont have teal hair but have the sense to notice a movement and do your research before you launch your cringy product.

the one time i animated something on mmd, it was just simply miku walking, it looked so surprisingly realistic to me at the time that i had to question if I was really just a beginner or actually a pro. polar is simply painful to watch, it looks almost like she has no joints and they animate her in some crappy 3d software. honestly if i had the mental energy for it and the will to look at her for more than five minutes, i would animate her so much better. And im an actual noob in 3d animation.

Whenever her arms bend, it looks like she's folding 😰

Shares the philosophy with Gorillaz of focusing on the music itself instead of the real people behind the curtain and creates some of the best vibes in the genre. Animated singer and other musically involved characters that stand in for the real world creators have a look that isn't conventionally attractive but is well designed and pops nicely. Polar: Virtual singer created by a corporation infamous for putting out mountains of garbage (and highly questionable) content. Music feels extremely manufactured to reach the most people possible and like it was written by an AI. Character has a design with alarming amounts of plagarism, somehow already got to the 500K-1M follower range with uncanny movements and lack of personality beyond virtual girl who wants to perform in the real world and whose creators either are extremely ignorant of what came before her or are the most pathetic liars hoping people are too stupid to call them out. *One of these things is not like the others...*

Splatoon: A video game about squids and octopi with idols singing in a completely made up language but still manages to make better music than polar. And not only that, they have also done irl hologram concerts.

Yep your right. Right now polar has 1 mil subs (and if you compare her channel with the other channels that are from her company, you'll see that her sub count is way too low and not only that, there are a lot of comments saying that most of her followers/ subs are most likely bots) but whenever she releases a new song, the views are way too low for a channel that apparently has over 1 mil subs. So you can say polar is a bit of a flop when it comes to popularity.

polar has nothing that makes virtual singers unique, she just mimics real-life tiktok influencers in cheap 3d. and her clip just mimics other clips, made by real people. btw, real people are boring to look at when they dont move, and polar's movements look awful.

Tbh you can't really compare Polar to Miku because you're essentially comparing a human to a program. In fact she's most comparable to a VTuber, and they have had irl concerts (and I don't mean just hololive, nijisanji has a planned concert as far as I'm aware). That being said, even she can't compare to them as she lacks the personality and charisma VTubers in general have.

Its the utter disregard of the fact that someone else human/program has done it before her. If the company had it worded that they are simply going to produce a virtual singer then barely anyone would mind

@@aniashie Another tbf: the voice banks are/were recorded from real people, the voice banks are recordings of a person's voice. So they also aren't a program like the original commenter is implying here. It's their voices as these characters made into a vocal synthesizer program suite. The voices of the vocaloids' voice banks had to come from somewhere as source material, which would be a person.

@@fegoracedia6080 Ironic that its 2023 and there isn't one concert organized for polar and miku and the others just had a freaking concert tour (only in japan) so even if miku and the others never had a concert before, they would still beat her about being the "first virtual idol to perform on a real stage"

It’s 2023. Polar came out in 2022. Hatsune Miku first came out in 2007 and had her first live concert in 2009. *Miku and the other Vocaloids’ movements are smoother than Polar, and are getting even better as time passes.*

My daughter has to do a presentation of her own choice. She added a sentence that goes like "A vocaloid is like a virtual singer, but polar is not"

The thing about this is how they claim how they claiming of being the "very first" of creating boundaries of virtual and physical from concert performance in metaverse etc, but Vocaloid has been doing all this and all for decades now and even the teal hair, the twin tails on one of her outfits? Even one of polar songs is like MitchiM song of miku wanting to split from virtual and physical realities (I cant think of name but saw on MitchieM channel and compared it). This is and feels like a westernize tiktoker Hatsune miku

She's also collabed with enstars and most notably Aqours, even made her sing live with the group on their valentines and white day concerts.

There is also some newer vocaloids such as Yameii and lil hdd who are impressively good. Not like accuracy to really human voices but rather approach and sound. The visuals are actually amazing too. Seeing them develop throughout the past few years has been one of the most rewarding things in my life. I recommend that people check them out!!!

Polar isn't ripping off Hatsune Miku however, but an entire Band from a MOBA: KDA from League of Legends
