We Have a Major Set Back

Winter is in full swing and the days are COLD. Single digits for the lows and 20's-30's for the highs this week. Dump a bunch of snow in there and that is our week. We'll be getting more work on the walk in chicken coop next week after we pick up our lumbar package!
Welcome to our High Desert Homestead where we inspire the dreamers to make big plans in small spaces! We have lived in four different U.S. States over the past eight years. In that time I learned to cook from scratch, bake with sourdough, and grow gardens wherever we lived. I grew blueberry bushes at a rental where I couldn’t “garden,” I grew tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, beets, radishes and flowers on our apartment balcony, I grew herb gardens in sunny window sills, and began my journey towards growing our homestead on our one acre property here in the high desert.
Let’s learn and grow together wherever we are on our homestead journey!

I have the Kitchenaid Professional Series, I think it might be a much heavier version, but also, as someone suggested below, do not go past 2 with a dough hook. Anything past 2 causes a lot of wear and tear on your mixer. We're dealing with negative temps over here in Cheyenne. The chickens are learning to acclimate well.

I thought your pretzels look beautiful; made with love and little hands. Awww the jumping kitchen aid. Are you locking the arm lift latch?? (not sure if that is the right term for it). My was jumping all over; but it really helped when I locked the arm. Also a friend of mine makes a lot of bread and items using the dough hook and she burned out the motor. She upgraded to the heavier duty one; but wow are they expensive. Mine doesn't smell like the motor is burning out yet. (fingers crossed).

I forget to lock the arm😂 I am saving up for a KitchenAid upgrade, but for now, this one is still working!

My kitchen aid does the same thing, but not quite as much as yours does. 🙂

Hi! You are not supposed go over level 2 when you have the dough hook on. 🤭 just takes a little longer and easier on the machine.

You need to rent a tiller! Yes I know tilling the soil is out of favor, but my goodness, it looks like pure clay!

It's actually more sandy with some clay. It's just really hard. We actually tried using a tiller when we set up our berry patch and it couldn't get past the first few inches. We did this with our first rows and the garden did good for the first year. So I guess we'll keep on keeping on!

You'll quickly wish to abandon your rows for moats and mounds. Water is capillary , look at Mimbres and Puebloan agriculture. Best.
