We Happy Few: The Story Explained

We Happy Few tells the story of Arthur Hastings, Sally Boyle, and Ollie Starkey. They are three 'moderately terrible' people living in an alternate history version of England. They are each trying to find their own way out of the drug-fuelled dystopia which is their town, Wellington Wells.

The fact that the tanks were fake is one of the worse things in the game; as it means the kids leaving wasn't necessary and we and the characters don't know what happened to the kids. It makes me wonder how Aurthur is feeling about everything after learning that the tanks weren't real.

I played Arthur’s story through 100%, I would spend HOURS playing every day. I completed every single side mission and it was completely worthwhile to me. Sally’s story was incredible, learning about her past, and getting to see Arthur through her eyes. Every part of this game was a masterpiece, from the main story to the DLCs.

I've been thinking a lot myself how great it could be as a play too. Especially if it was a musical, since we've already seen them design such amazing in-game songs, and the design of the settings, especially the village and places like hayworth labs, would be super cool to see turned into theatre sets. I can imagine the lighting being used to show the intense contrasts between being off joy and on joy and so on. Though I think the story would have to be shortened or altered significantly if it was to be a musical or play, given that it's so long we wouldn't have enough time to tell the whole story properly. Still, if there was a way to make a concise storyline in the world of We Happy Few for a play, I would do anything to go and see it. Same goes for a movie or show too, I just want to see more of this franchise really.

Arthur already has his dark past and terrible decisions, then they make out like his even worse than what you see and it really annoyed me. Like some of Sally's side quests are just undoing stuff he did. Like the silly teddy bear I think developers sometimes forget that when you play as a character for so long, you begin to see yourself in them or just care about them greatly. Yes I’m really hoping one day we’ll get a remake that fixes the gameplay issues.
It's a tad sad that the We Happy Few movie never finished production. Each act could easily be it's own movie. Perhaps maybe also a TV series? "We(llington Wells's) Happy Few". Each episode stars a different character faced with their own problems in Wellington Wells. This can go from the garden district, maindenholm, appleholm, the parade, practically every corner of wellington wells. Each episode will have at least some connection or subtle nod to the main characters and/or their story. And at the end of every single one of the episodes, the character we follow will always either die, become a downer, or made character development only to lose it all to Joy OD. Just for that extra bit of dystopian depression. Maybe break the mold for a few episodes but always add a twist to it. One character actually succeeds with great sacrifice, another reaches their goal only to find out it's not all it's cracked up to be, etc.

I liked this game. I'm interested in a sequel to learn more about what's on the outside of Wellington Wells. An entire town and infrastructure and government with police force, in the middle of England, doesn't just "exist" without there being more to it. Are all cities like Wellington Wells? Why were the people being kept there and unallowed to leave? Who initially forced people to take Joy? There are a lot of interesting possibilities I'd be interested in seeing these three united again traversing whatever lies outside of Wellington Wells. We still never know WHY the Germans wanted the children. Lots of questions but I'm excited for them to be answered (hopefully) one day
@EvenBadWolvesGaming

The Germans taking children actually happened though mostly with Polish kids who were used for labour and experiments unless they were considered ‘Germanic’ enough to deserve to be Germanized by forcibly adopting them into German families. The question about the Joy is answered in the We All Fall Down DLC - General Byng ordered a drug be produced to keep people happy and compliant and Victoria Byng suggested Joy be initially introduced to the water supply to get people to start taking it. Britain as a whole is meant to be in pretty bad shape though not much is known except that there are children in other parts of Britain demonstrated by the child Arthur runs into in the epilogue. I would love to see a sequel with more of Britain, maybe London itself being introduced to Joy by Verloc returning to London after the destruction of Wellington Wells.

@@snackdaddygames I wouldn't think it was a prison colony - if it was I dont think they would have the same bobbies who were responsible for rounding up the children still in positions of authority. Verloc could be using the town as an experiment and planning on going back to London at some point (if allowed to leave). The rest of the world wasn't destroyed - the US and Russia ultimately beat Germany so we can assume those countries are still ok and I'm pretty sure Australia would be ok too 🙃 It seems like the only way out of Wellington Wells (or at least the only way out by land) is the bridge. It could be that people in the garden district could escape by boat if they could make one, but they may not think there is anywhere to go.

This game had a great story, and I love the aesthetics. Too bad it was so buggy.
People overhyped about it all over the roof and then ruthlessly diminished it under their feet once the wind turned. The only problem I had with it is that Arthur finding out his past just around the time the town could no longer last was still a big coincidence. It would be nice if they could make this more organic. Otherwise, it's not Shakespeare but certainly serviceable, maybe even on par with Pathologic. The gameplay, tho, there's that...

Arthur remembering his past at the same time is a coincidence, but it could make sense in the game world that this would be when he remembered - i.e. when the Joy is starting to go bad. I adore this game. I know they’ve said they’ll never make a we happy few part 2 but I can wish lol
This game has a great story, captivating atmosphere, and amazing graphics. It’s downfall was that the gameplay just isn’t fun. It’s very repetitive, and although I appreciate the procedural generation it just leads to it feeling like you’ve seen everything 100 times and exploring and searching for mission items just isn’t fun. I’d say 5/10: it could’ve been so much more even though I greatly appreciate the small development team’s true passion for creating something different.
I played the entire game + the DLC fully and i enjoyed the game. Would recommend but it's kinda sad many people didn't finish it. Ig because the mayority bought it during its alpha stage at the time and it didn't had a full story yet. The only complaint i got was a few bugs that they haven't fix and the occasional frame rate drops. The story in the otherhand it's very interesting and good but there are some plot holes between 2 characters story. Kinda similar to the plot hole in RE2 Remake.

Arthur meeting the child was OUTSIDE of Wellington Wells.
While Arthur’s play through was more linear and story based like bioshock, Sally’s play through was more open world and had a cooler story and characters. Here’s my take on Arthur’s story: Arthur sent Percy to a concentration camp that would eventually lead to him getting gassed. Percy and the other children died once they got to their destination because if we look at the history of Hitler’s Germany, anyone that wasn’t “arian” he wanted gone. The UK, not being “arian” would help support that idea. As to why they left adults and kids above the age of 13 alive could be because they could build machinery, and other things that would help their war effort. If they didn’t have kids, then it would only be a matter of time before they all died off, and with the plague that would speed up the process, and with everyone so drugged up on joy, no one cleaned up anything, so it spread even faster. Arthur would search for his brother till he eventually finds that out, and probably through his own selfish guilt probably end up taking his life because he couldn’t live with the guilt. Now let’s go to the girl’s story. She got in a boat to escape wellington wells. Only one problem. In this world, Germany won the war, which means every country was taken over by Nazi Germany. So no matter where she goes, the rest of the world will probably be in a similar situation, and once her child is discovered, she and her child would meet a terrible fate. Ollie, makes it back to Ireland, only to find they have their own version of joy as well. He has the option to either continue to be drugged up, or live with the fact that he got his neighbor’s daughter killed. The Pressure and guilt would overtake him and he would eventually take his own life as well. In the meantime England is off their Joy and slowly rebuilding as best as they can, but I think overall they can’t and they all fall to their “downer” life With that all being said, it’s excessively dark I know… but wwii wasn’t exactly rainbows and peace either. It was the world fighting against an evil it had never seen before.

Germany was actually defeated in the Universe of the game in 1949, there are references to Russia liberating Germany. So by the time Arthur, Sally and Ollie leave Wellington Wells they would be entering a post Nazi world. I wanted to play this game but never got the opportunity. Hearing the story just renews my interest in playing. This popped up in my reccomended, and now have watched a few of your videos. They're quite good, I'll definitely be hitting that subscribe button.

I actually really love this game, bugs and repetitive mechanics and all. I’ve played it numerous times just for fun lol 😅
Ollie really wasn’t a good person before he took Oblivion

No he really wasn't 😥
Saw a Tylenol commercial during this video, uh oh
It’s such a shame that the gameplay was boring and a letdown while the story and characters were beautifully written and executed. The VAs really sold the emotion in this game as well.
I have been a looking for a video of this game for soooo looooong

Hi, thanks for the video, I upgraded my PC and was excited for playing this game and went through a good portion of Arthur's story... but even ignoring the bad combat and stealth mechanics, the game proved itself being just a lot of fetch quests one after another and the distances were so far away I hated it lol decided to drop it and just watch this.

You're welcome and yeah the fetch quests and endless running back and forth is a complete grind.
We Happy Few is a flawed but still awesome game.

Many 1984 references as Arthur is similar to Winston who is the main character in 1984 and Wellington Wells is a nod to Orson Welles, the AUTHUR of 1984

Tons of subtle references, and the very unsubtle 1984 exhibit.

1984 was written by George Orwell.

I had to get the platinum trophy for it and honestly by the end, I hated it. Such a buggy mess, although the bugs sometimes helped, it was so broken. Such a shame bc the game and concept is sooo fun😩
One of my all time favorite games!!
I just find it irritating the amount of people who say that Sally “slept with” Arthur’s dad. Like no… she was a teenager when her mother wiped out her whole family leaving her behind in the middle of a war! Then she was forced to move in with her neighbors and was then taken advantage of cause remember… she was a teenager! It seemed like everyone in her life wanted something from Sally but never actually wanted Sally whether it was for her body or her brain/knowledge. Every decision she made from the time she found her family to when she left Wellington Wells was all survival. Her story was rough but I’m so glad she made it out of there with Gwen!
My boyfriend and i played some of it. I likes the Demo, but the actual game didnt get me.... After this video i might give it a chance :)
1. Arthur find his brother 2.sally and gwen had a new life 3. Olliy made it home 4. The people come to the end of their time
For a game with the drug joy it’s a fuckin downer lol
I would of thought playing for the first time that they were using the kids to make joy like in a pure joy comes from child like wonder type thing

It would have been an interesting way to go and even more dystopian than what they went with.
A bit like 1984. At least Arthur's job is.
The game story is interesting but the game play is awful. Still i wonder what happened to the kids after they got traded to the germans
I think this would make an interesting alternate history mystery movie if done right, but needs to expand what happened to the children.
This game was great
I love this game so much! I feel so lucky that the game starts off on Oct. 10th, my bday haha

Yup, i did not finished the whole game. Devs should've kept my progress from the Act 1 to Act 2. Not only you start from scratch, but Sally can't even whack people on the head with strong attack.
This game is a beautiful piece of satire targeting British society. Today, the Brits are extremely sensitive, to the point that they arrest people for “grossly offensive statements” on social media. They will literally arrest people for “causing anxiety”. This is very similar to the way the bobbies behave in the game, eliminating any source of anxiety or “downer” attitudes. if you don’t fall in line and go with what the mob wants, you’re done. Not only that, but Victoria Byng’s reaction to reality is very similar to the screeches of the mob when confronted with things that don’t fit their narrative. They don’t care about reality as long as they can dream up that everything is good.

Not my cup of tea, but surely a good watch…
I had a different ending with arthur he met the police officer that stopped him getting on the train has a realisation that it’s pointless him escaping as he’ll never find his brother then they both walk off down the bridge together
Is the beginning video a trailer(First time seeing it)? I kind of finished it. But still collecting achievements, with all the bugs around. Staff replied with email saying,"Could you list every single bug with the number and details. " Where the F is their debugging/quality-test team!?

It is a trailer, you can see the full trailer here kzread.info/dash/bejne/h3uGqq6mcrG1j9o.html one of the best game trailers in my opinion. I really wish they would fix the bugs or better yet give us a remake with better gameplay.
So how long until this is adapted in to a tv series
Did it get taken down?
