    Hello my dear yes the long stems you held up is the runner. The original plant is called the mother. Runners are the daughters. If the daughters touch soil they will root and now you have a new plant. But, as long as the mother is connected to the daughter energy will go to the daughter instead of producing your 🍓🍓🍓Do you want more plants for next year?

  • @AGardenersJourneyHomestead

    @AGardenersJourneyHomestead

    Ай бұрын

    Oh that makes sense. So should I have been rooting the runners the whole time and they would have kept producing?

  • @theheardhomestead

    @theheardhomestead

    Ай бұрын

    @@AGardenersJourneyHomestead yup they would have made you new plants for next year. If you root them you have to wait to make sure they have secured themselves in the dirt before cutting them from the mother. It’s like an umbilical cord. If you cut it before they root the new baby plant can easily die. If you want a nice strawberry patch for next year you can keep rooting them to stock up on plants. If you want the mother to give you strawberries, root the babies and cut them from connecting. Oh and “daughters” send out more daughters. So the runner can get very long with a new plant on it about every 10-12 inches.

    “The runner”, the part that has the long string has several strawberry plant on it. the part that has the leaves & young roots is a new plant . You have 3 to 4 new strawberry plants on the runner.

    Just love how you show it like it is!! Amazing harvest. I'm almost 61 and I have the 1 foot raised beds and a enclosed garden with just dirt rows. I make it a point to just pull a few weeds in the morning or evening when the sun's not so hot. I don't mind the bending it's great exercise for me so far lol. I just bring a small pail n pull a bit and enjoy a walk through.

    Very nice onion harvest Barbara! You’re awesome for dealing with those weeds. I surely would have had the hubs come pull those for me. I have my limits. 😂 One thing I noticed is it looked like your onions had more growing to do. The greens were very lush and large. They typically fall over when they’re ready. That could have been one reason they were hard to pull out as well. I’ve found when they are really ready, they just pull right out. That’s my own experience though. Enjoy!

    Hi Barbara! I love your personality and your garden enthusiasm, you are awesome girl. And yes, your onion harvest is awesome too!. I am an enthusiastic gardener as well. I'm 67 years old and I have a much smaller garden location. When you can get those container beds, get them. In the meantime, you definitely should continue growing onions. I have been growing them for almost 12 years now and I am bold enough to tell you that mine always come out "pearl size" lol. I have used a lot of nitrogen and everything, but I guess I was not using enough. I have been using Dixondale forever but this fall, I will order the fertilizer for the first time as well. Perhaps that was the key. Anyway, I have the Vego beds. At my age, gardening has to get easier. You are going to love them when you get yours and I pray that you get a sponsor because you are a working gardener. I totally agree with you, gardening is hard work, and your videos are going to bring you favor. I have 10 containers altogether, but only 6 are set up and in use. I live in Georgia, where it is hot and humid as well. Do you take emails? I have a couple of containers brand new, but they are 32 inches tall. Here is my email if you are interested:ahgrower60@gmail.com. In any case, i enjoy your videos. Simply awesome!

My reason for saying that is because 1) You got an awesome onion harvest and 2) If tou don't have to buy the raised beds, you can save that money for the dog you really want.(I forgot the breed.) I started typing this last night and my phone died. Lol. So on the strawberries. I know some major channels have greenstalks for strawberries, but the math has never worked for me. I started with 4 plants and rooting runners(around 12 years ago). A few years ago we were finally getting enough berries for a mess of strawberry shortcake, and this year we had 1 mess, I have a gallon bag in the freezer, and the last 2 quarts were lost to me not getting them cleaned in time. Theoretically this year would have been probably another 1/3 bigger, but since they started turning 2 weeks after I broke my foot, it was on the kids to do all the picking and while they are young adults, gardening isn't their passion, so where I would pick and weed simultaneously, they would skip super weedy sections or not pick berries up off the ground and prop them up, so we lost a lot more to rot, ants, slugs, etc than most years. But like I said, I am more diligent about going out once a day then twice a day during the peak if the season. Normally we start picking memorial day week, this year our season started 2 weeks early and we run to mid-June for our season. I want to say when we lived near Gallatin Mom would buy berries late April to May down there. But quantity.... I have hundreds of plants. They are my weed suppression secret. I plant something, and it gets surrounded by berry plants. The leaves shade out many of the weeds, and mulch does the rest. I just can't imagine getting enough berry plants in a greenstslk to be worth it. Oh, and the long things you had on thd berry plants, those are runners, and if they don't find soil, they will send out another runner.... kinda like spider plant babies do. Congrats on the onions! I vote in ground.

    I vote for garden beds. I'm sixty two, and I can't imagine bending over like you did. I'd have go get on the ground to pull them, and then call the fire department to come get me up. The first time I grew onions, in a garden bed they were grocery store size. I love pearl onions and that's about all I got. You still have grocery store size. I always buy the three pound bags, and they're about the size of your smaller ones.
