We Get an Inspection From the Factory (MJ Sailing - Ep 307)

Terry flies all the way over from Vietnam to inspect our boat - will we get the seal of approval?

In this week's video we use the warm weather we're still getting to work on the storage areas up on the foredeck. We have 75 gallon water tanks on each side, but Matt wants a way to equalize the tanks so we're not too heavy on one side over the other.
Drilling holes to the middle storage locker, Matt plans to add valves which will let water flow between the two areas when opened.
Then, it's time for real excitement at the marina, as Terry has just arrived from Vietnam. He's in town to show one of the Max Cruise 44 hulls at the Annapolis show, and while he's in town, he came over to inspect our build. Not that him and Matt aren't talking constantly, but it was really nice for him to be able to walk through it and see it in person.
Does he approve of our work so far? You'll have to watch and find out.
Lastly, we get Steve on hull 4 to pop by for the evening, letting us get our first looks at the boat since it launched from the factory 16 months ago. What was really fun, was having Alex and Tucker aboard, showing them the finished product of what our boat will one day look like.
We hope you enjoy!!

    Matt: the way you have the pumping for the two tanks, it will only stabilize the tanks to equal levels. If you want put more water in tank versus the other, you need a transfer pump and additional through hull fitting at top and valves. It would also be nice so you could recirculate one tank and install a filter system to scrub one tank at a time or if one tank gets a leak you can transfer it.

  • @NemecJesse
    @NemecJesse8 ай бұрын

    Where the valves are located for the two water tanks, you should build that area out as a shallow cabinet, from top to bottom. Would be a good place to mount tools & hardware to the back wall that you might want accessible around the fordeck without damage to the chain. If the access door was only half-height (or so, depending on how much chain) and hinged at the bottom, you could still access the valves underway and not at anchor. Just a thought?

    10:20 You would be smart to make a hose at the top of the tank that goes from one tank to the other, in case water is led from one tank to the other tank, so air moves the other way. This will prevent negative pressure from being created and the transfer of water will go much faster.

    Nice to see the finished boat. There is a lot to be said for the factory approach to building things, it creates repeatability which improve quality and lower costs. Building one of things requires a lot of learning process, but it does allow for customization and expression. It takes a lot of patience, and perseverance to do what you are doing. not for the faint of heart. One of the reasons I enjoy your show so much is those qualities we see you in you. The desire to do it right, and put in the extra effort required. In a way it makes one appreciate the factory product more, you do get a great value from the product they make.

    As an American married to someone from the middle east, absolutely put in the bum wash. It really is cleaner over all and you will use less paper so its less to worry about clogging the head and less you need to carry. No need to heat the water either. Most people will use the unheated wash and freak out the first time. Within a week you will be used to it and not notice the temperature at all. I think the only reason these aren't standard on boats is fresh water is at a premium. But with a water maker that shouldn't be a problem and if it you are low in your tanks just stop using it with all your other water conservation procedures. Don't pinch the threads. Get two extra nuts. Putting two extra nuts will allow you to have one lock against the other giving you a better surface to take hold of the shaft.

    Matt, If you want to spend more money, but have some piece of mind of not emptying your water supply, you could: Refill the holes at the bottom of the tanks; drill holes in the top of the tanks; insert siphon tubes to the bottom of the tanks; and bridge between the two tanks with a pump and set of valves or two pumps to transfer. The ideal method would be to use only one tank for use with one pump without valves; that way you will have the other tank to top off the primary tank. Just a thought..or two. Thank y'all for sharing. Cheers! Blue Skies and Warm Temperatures. Faithfully, James

    Ball valves for LONG TERM single position use are NOT a good option. A superior option for reliability on a valve rarely used is always a GATE valve made from brass. Ball valves take a set(plastic part inside a stainless steel or brass valve) and then leak(don't close) if left to sit for a long period of time. Gate valves have a self cleaning ability as it slides the garbage off the gate as it closes and is 100% made of brass etc, no plastic. .
