We Found The Mega-Herd! | Montana Archery Elk (EP. 1)

In episode 1 of this Montana archery elk hunt, Randy Newberg links up with employee and fellow tag-holder Michael Parente as they pack up a trailer of llamas and head to central Montana. This area is familiar to Randy as his son shot a mature bull here 16 years prior. Things have certainly changed since then, but they hope to be able to share in some of that success.
After a five hour drive they load up the llamas with panniers full of gear and food and make a big loop to try and get somewhere that other hunters won’t go. Or at least hopefully it puts them in a good position for when the inevitable hunting pressure does come.
It doesn’t take long to find elk, as they locate a herd of spikes and cows not long after leaving the truck. They set up and camp and are up early the next morning to try and locate an elk to either call within range or put a stalk on. While there are plenty of elk around, the task is still a difficult one to complete.

Ha Ha Ha As an Old Guy, I was thinking, "Why in the hell would I even TRY to put my spare up there?" There's a good reason I didn't get a rack built on my cap. LOL

My dad's friend did the same thing putting a spare tire in the back of my truck. Day later I called a big 6by6 in to him in the bridgers. He goes to pull the bow back no dice. 15 yard shot.

Randi really makes the show I don’t know if you guys have ever watched almost heroes when Chris Farley is smelling the Buffalo crap and Matthew Perry asked him how can you tell that the crap is fresh and he says the herd is right over there and then Chris Farley still smelling the Buffalo crap that’s what I thought of when I seen Randy doing that with the elk crap

BTW, I really enjoy hunting and chasing all types of game, but my outlook has always been, no matter how long you cook them, antlers just never get tender. My family cannot eat antlers, I will never be too proud to shoot a fat cow. Hopefully, I will draw one of the first elk tags in Virginia, my home.

Randy I am one year behind you I think at 56, however, I am former military and did way too many ridiculous things. If my joints, limbs, and corpuscles did not pop, creak, whine, and I did not groan with every movement,my wife would think I was dead.

Micheal Duncan, I am 73, was a grunt in Nam and I am a long way from that 21 year old guy physically. That said, I can still rally for a day of hunting. Keep at it, I used a Howa 7mm-08 to extend my hunting days, much more hand/ thumb friendly than an old 1903 Springfield 06. I just bought a new crossbow and got a exemption to use it during Bow season. Applied for a desert bighorn tag. All so I can enjoy a few more seasons hunting with my son. No more five mile pack outs, but I really don't need to kill anything. An easy late season cow tag works fine.
