We Found FLOODS in Zlatibor, SERBIA (Motorhome Europe)

In our last video in this Serbia series, we make our way to Zlatibor, which after Belgrade, is the most popular tourist destination in Serbia. A legend says that it was named after white pines with yellow needles like old gold that once covered the beautiful slopes of Mt. Zlatibor. Although we did not spend much time in the town itself (as a spell of extreme rain was forecast), we took a ride in the Gold Gondola before the heavens opened up. With its 9 kilometers in length, the Gold Gondola is one of the longest cable cars for panoramic sightseeing in the world. The ride starts near Adventure Park right behind the market and ends at the Tornik summit. The way station where you can exit and re-enter is Ribničko Lake. The ticket you buy is for a round trip and for adults is 1200 RSD (about 10 euros). Tornik Summit and Ribničko Lake are certainly attractions that are worth visiting. The 25-minute-long cable car ride alone gives you a great view of Zlatibor.

    We try to be open minded about destinations. As we run a website on travel destinations, we know a fair amount about a country before we visit. But you have to remember that we see it through the eyes of 'tourists' which is very different from when you live in a country. Most people are a lot more critical of their own countries than they are of others.

    That was a wonderful video guys. So interesting. - Serbia looks stunning, so green and picturesque - Were you tempted to bring that cute dog with you ? I think I would have been... - I've got a confession, I thought you were going on a canal with a long Gondola... - breakfast looks delicious, who cooked it ? - you guys have a great sense of adventure, I envy you.... - Your dinner looked scrummy, pork and fried veggies - bathroom, did I miss it ? I was looking forward to getting a look at your re-vamped bathroom. - Andre is Inspector Gadget ! what a wonderful solution to securing that window - great tip about that tape, I would immediately have tried to use silicone sealant - Lisa reminded me (when she left the van after 3 days) of when you let cattle/cows out of their sheds after being cooped up all winter, they go crazy, jumping and leaping around the place. No, I'm not comparing Lisa to a cow :-) Safe travelling in Montenegro.

On some points: - Sadly the doggies had to stay behind, travelling with animals are complicated (we're also not planning to stay with the van 12 months a year). - Andre is the cook (always) 😋 -- The bathroom follow up did not make the final cut as the video ran long. We'll have to do it again at some point sorry! Well spotted though. - Montenegro is stunning but it's getting closer to holiday season and we need to get moving...

    Sliding windows are the best for security and also to open in places where motorhome windows are not 'allowed' to be opened. But we really like the large windows when the weather is bad (or want to escape mozzies and flies in summer). We're quite happy with the modification - although nothing is completely secure it improved the current situation by 100%

    Yeah, we are definitely looking forward to experiencing Serbia. Thank you guys for your lovely films as ever! As for campsites, we are actually planning a video on why we DO use them so much here in the UK - vanlife is a real challenge to enjoy without paying here. Saying that, we're travelling further afield for a little while and have found spots the further north we've gone (we are from a traditional holiday area where every square meter is monetised!). We can't WAIT to visit Europe and neighbouring countries where living in a van isn't so demonised! Anyway, big love to you both, keep enjoying your adventures and please do keep sharing them with us! We'll definitely be cooking our own (vegan) food in Serbia though! Oh and we noticed the cheeky 😉 in your intro 😄

  • @WeWillNomad

    @WeWillNomad

    Thanks again for the nice comment. Truth is, we don't mind paying for a nice stop, but there has to be some form of value in return. Around most of western Europe (btw well spotted 😉 that's a little poke at all the sensitive souls who stress about where west, central and east begin and end), aires, sostas and the like are plentiful and mostly free or incredibly cheap. Like the small town of Mombarcaro which provides hilltop parking with incredible views, electric and water (even wifi) for EUR6. We tend to stay away from anything that is 'resort' like or 'mixed' camping and stick to motorhome only places. In the Baltics you will find plenty of choice on the coast but it's generally pricey compared to most of western Europe (in our opinion). Frankly, we've learned this year that Croatia / Montenegro is far pricier than we thought and probably more expensive to travel by motorhome than even Italy. Anyways, this is a topic for another day. 😋 Have a great summer!

    For a unique nature and historical experience you should follow the Danube from Ram to Kladovo. You will pass three recently renovated fortresses from the 14th and 16th century, Ram, Golubac and Fetislam in Kladovo, the oldest urban settlement in Europe, Lepenski vir which has a great museum, and the beautiful and, for Europe unique, Djerdap national park, which the river runs through. You will pass where the Danube is the widest, 6 km at Golubac town, and shortly after where it is the narrowest at the Iron Gates. You will see Europe's largest stone sculpture, the head of the last Facial king Decebalus chiseled out on the Romanian side, who lost his kingdom to emperor Traianus of Rome. You will pass the Roman fortress Diana before Kladovo, and just after Kladovo you will see the foundations of Traianus' bridge still standing after 2000 years. Look it up on the net, it's well worth to read about it beforehand. Kladovo has a small but excellent archeological museum about all the rich historical remains of the area. Follow the Danube southwards towards Negotin and you enter one of the best wine areas of the Balkans, excelling especially in red wines. I can give you more information about that if you want. The area from Veliko Gradište and Eastwards is the Vallachian region, where people speak Romanian, especially in the villages. This multicultural environment is very noticeable in Vojvodina, north of Belgrade where you have many nationalities living mixed or side by side. My mother's village is Romanian, the one before is Slovak and the one after is Serb. Depending on the area there are Hungarians, Czech, Ruthenians, Ukrainians and other minorities living there. So language, food, traditional clothing, architecture, churches and traditions vary from village to village, from town to town.

    @@WeWillNomad remembered another thing. If you plan to cross into the EU, the best place to do that is at the hydroelectric power plant Djerdap I just before Kladovo. This is a small crossing and it will take maybe 30 min or even less to enter Romania, compared to many hours entering Croatia or Hungary, which is the worst.

    Unfortunately that tape only comes in shades of grey and dark green . 😁 I actually like the grey most. Fuel cost depends on the country. In most of the Balkans fuel cost is regulated and you pay the same at any station. Cheapest was North Macedonia at 1.10 EUR, Serbia & Albania 1.60 and Montenegro 1.40 at the moment. We usually check the general trends online per country. Camping vs parking is always the issue. With the exception of Croatia it seems free parking is tolerated everywhere and even completely legal in some countries like Albania. You have to check local regulations as you go.

    @@nebojsa1976 Херцеговина је великом већином настањена Србима, шта причаш да је Хрватска? Имаш Требиње које је мени можда најљепши град у Републици Српској, имаш љепотицу Крајине, Бања Луку са рафтингом на Врбасу. Бијељина је исто љепотица и са етно селом Станишићи има много за видјети. Имаш Уну за риболов направљено у Крајини. А у Босни имаш прелијеп Вишеград, и Јахорину која је стварно врхунска планина као и Златибор. Био сам и у Србији, а Србија има неизмјерне природне љепоте такође. Не могу одредити шта је љепше, од мене десетка за обоје.
