Abandoned & Forgotten Places
Documenting abandoned mines like never before!
Let's take abandoned mine exploring to the next level!
With your support you can help make this the best abandoned mine exploring channel on KZread!
Shot entirely in 4K! ...so, turn up those video settings!
On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.
Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST. (that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that subscribe button and bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!
Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT! All these things help grow our channel and your financial support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob, thanks you!
Ok, now for the ugly stuff...

Hey Gly, I think you do a great job bringing us this kind of entertainment, as for safety aspect with roping off your vehicle I would recommend turning it side ways and going from the tire as a anchor point using 1 inch webbing. As for my background in ropes and climbing I'm the county search and rescue commander for high angle and rope rescue and we've actually had vehicles slide when pulling from the vehicle like you have setup in this episode. Keep up the great work and thanks again I love all the mines in my area

Good to see you and Laura doing some rope work together. But you need to be a little more careful. Never use an accender with only one hand! Always use one hand on the handle and hold the tail of the rope in the other, Put your camera in a pack. Accenders don't always hold especially when you go on longer drops. Sometimes dirt or a piece of clothing gets in the cam and you could go for a real nasty ride. Also you should have stayed on the rope all the way to the bottom, why gamble on old ladders when you have ropes? Don't pass bad habits to your new partner you will never forgive yourself if something happens to her!

  • @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces

“Gly”: On short rappels like this one (less than 20 feet) I’ll take a chance and use one hand so I can hold the camera with the other but on longer rappels I’d definitely strap the camera to my pack and two hand the descender and rope tail. You know me buddy, I always struggle between free climbing and ropes but your right, looking back on things I probably should’ve stayed on the rope for that laddered area.

@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces You never can tell, I fell off a ladder that the rung broke on once lucky I only fell 5 feet. A few times it came loose from where it was secured. It is just a matter of playing the odds. To get up a lip over a steep drop you use a footstrap on your hand ascender. Take the hand ascender off the rope and put it above the lip then stand up. You capture your progress with your croll. You will only get a few inches at a time and it is hard to do but it gets easier with practice.

“Gly”: Yep, since making this video I’ve watched a few videos to see how that works. When we were there I wasn’t able to visualize the process. Another strategy is to use a drill and mount anchors with QuickDraws above the ledge into the hanging wall. Then, on your way back up, the rope wouldn’t be pinched against the ledge.

You need another ascender to clip on to the rope beyond the corner and suspend yourself from it. Disconnect your descender and reposition it beyond the bend. I highly recommend practicing this stuff on a small cliff area where you’re not risking your life and get yourself comfortable with the sequence. I’ve used the same petzl descender and I’ve done so many drops that I have retired two of them and am on my third one now. Stay safe out there, keep trusting your instincts. 😊

Then climbing down a ladder with the bottom rung resting on another 4x4.... Add more narrative so we know what you're doing is safe, please. Your explanation of the gas in the last portal was excellent. The viewer understood what was happening and why you turned around.

I wasn't even there and I got butterflies in my stomach watching you get on those ladders in the shaft. It's easier than you imagine to ascend back up over the edge of the cliff, you rest on your croll, remove your ascender from the rope and re-position it above that point :). Yup, those sulphides might be the truth of why they put bars on that last one, looks like it would be exhausting to get back up. Good decision not to go further, I've seen people panic in that situation, but I've told them to calm and get out at a normal pace both so they don't consume more air and also increase risk of injury from rushing out. Good adventure :)

Hmmm.. that’s not a bad idea. 🤔 I’m happy you enjoyed the adventure! Oh, by the way… don’t let your water down there in Australia spin the wrong direction. 😉 Take care!

Gly, i think a second ascender could help. Leave one further down hanging over the edge. That way you could ascend to the ledge and then use the upper to finish the ascent.

A mans got to know his limitations... Clint said it best. To get over a lip when you're ascending, tie a length of line about ten to fifteen feet ahead of the lip and let it extend beyond the lip. Once you get to the point where your ascenders are getting bound switch one over to the short line. As you climb you will take the weight off your other line and can easily move your ascenders along. Learn how to tie a Prusik knot. They don't slip and you dont bind your good line using other knots.

Well, that was suspenseful. 1st....That one you attempted, looked like an ore pass, get the ropes! 2nd....lots of very loose rocks to get down, but to get back up!! how ya gonna do that!! ?? (did you two throw that rope down first?, or was it there as you went down?) Don't know how you two would have made it up without that "assist". Water at the bottom anyway and good thing you smelled the bad air when you did. Good decision at that point....back to the top. Today's episode was pretty "on the edge" literally.

I have a problem with my perception from your camera angle. How did you slip beneath that rail at the entrance, because it doesn't look like there's more than a foot of space for you to crawl under? When you're walking through a cave, it also looks very small to me although obviously it's large enough for an adult to easily navigate. When you and Laura were sliding down that tunnel with rocks moving underneath you, it made me very nervous as it looked as if you both would slide right down. Glad you made it out safely.

“Gly”: It was about 20 inches, a tight squeeze for a guy like me and much harder to get back up and out than it was to slide in. I had to take off all of my gear to do it. Yes, that scree was really loose and we were for the most part sliding our way down on top of the loose rock.

Re: dangling. First off, I'm no authority on this. I would have dropped 2 lines. 1 static line with prusiks with foot loops in ideal locations so that you can take the load off the primary line and get your ascenders over the lip. Sounds like a lot of work for perhaps a dead end mine. And you really need a static line. Try doing it on a dynamic line and you'll understand why. 🙂 LIke you, I'd have to practice this in a relatively safe environment before doint it for real. Nice to see Laura. It touched my heart "Come on down Sweetie". :-)

“Gly”: We were thinking the same thing, allot of trouble for what could very well be a dead end mine. Another way to get past that obstacle is to drill and mount a couple of anchors with QuickDraws into the hanging wall above the ledge to avoid the rope from being pinched against the ledge on your way back up.

  • @TheSilmarillian
    @TheSilmarillian7 ай бұрын

@22:30 or so no dangle thingy and the way I see being on rope if I look consider then have to pause and think about it more than once , find another way its always been my climbing mantra, and a dangle drop with no where to put your feet , as in a recessed wall ,how are you going to get the ascender back over the drop edge, wise call indeed, yes its doable , but a grey beard here myself that would have been a no go for me even when I had the younger upper body strength, even then I would have rock bolted the rope higher at an anchor point on the drop wall to provide clearance from the edge, nice upload indeed hello again from Australia , humble opal miner here . Great to see Laura back hello there good lady.

“Gly”: Not only was it a dangle with a recessed wall, the point of descent would be directly under / next to the area where all that loose rock was. Some mines will always remain a mystery. Safety first!
