I saw this in the theater and honestly for me the most disappointing part wasn't the bad CGI, but rather that I wanted to see the actual Rock fight at the end. I think a well choreographed fight scene between the three of them would have been much more amazing than any CGI character .

Mummy Returns was a big tease for the Scorpion King: the best part was the intro with Rock as the human warrior, and made me REALLY want to see entire movie about that character, and well, we got it!

What I really love about these segments is how you highlight that the smallest detail changes can have such a massive impact on the end result. It encourages me to have a much greater attention to detail.

@Lassi Kinnunen The thing is, the things you could have done with 2001 era techniques aren't really something you can just go back and fix. They're techniques that you would have had to have used in the actual creation of the shot.

People seem concerned that he seems to be doing every possible emotion with his face I mean, if you've been entombed for a thousand years, you'll probably want to do a face check too

Whilst at Uni I worked part time on a service help desk and one of the IT Engineers was a VFX expert who was amazing with computers. He told me when the Scorpion King was released the Director wanted all the VFX to be done in 4 months when they were told a minimum of 9 months. When the Scorpion King was released and was a major flop at the Box Office the Director blamed VFX. The VFX Team said that's what you asked for, we told you a minimum of 9 month I think they done it in 5 still 4 months short to what it should have been.

I was disappointed that they put all that work in the environment and just went with a deep fake to fix his face, it was an underwhelming change.

Just the rock's sudden eye widenings and overall bewildered expression makes the deep fake very disturbing

I know in one of The Rock’s earlier movies (I don’t remember the name of it) but they made a terrible licensed video game for it, and you can actually perform his wrestling finisher, Rock Bottom, in combat

Now that two years has passed since you posted this video, I'd be curious what new advancements in technology would let you do this type of work even better. With that in mind, I'd like to see you improve an even older VFX shot. I don't have a specific one in mind, but how about something from the 1980's version of "Clash of the Titans" or even older (even black and white?) Godzilla movies? What could you do to make those seem uncharacteristically good? Like, way too good for their time? Seeing modern VFX seamlessly inserted into an old black and white monster movie would be an epic technological and artistic achievement!

You HAVE to fix the Agent Smiths v.s Neo fight scene from The Matrix Reloaded, right after Neo grabs the pole.

Let's not forget the amount of CGI in this movie. It's overwhelming. You know this team was told, "looks good, move on to the next scene." There is some cringe but this was a massive project with probably a year or less to do all the CG.

Yeah, first Mummy used it more sparingly, mostly for mummies themselves and scarabs, but the sequel had the little shrunken head dudes, a lot of vegetation done in CG, and tons of effects in the final fight with everything collapsing, hell-like underworld with hands pulling the heroes, and the scorpions.

This may not be a perfect fix, but you guys made it 10 times better in literally a day

Think about redoing Jabba the Hutt from the Special Edition of Star Wars: A New Hope.

Rock's face looked emotionally numb. You've made the face excellent but it just needed to be angry.

I remember that even as a kid who loved the mummy I was like "This shit look stupid" but I still watched the movie like 10 times.

The only thing that really would improve this would be the EYES. They track "weirdly", and look at the camera a bit too much.

Yeah but you also gotta consider he said in the video he went through the entire Scorpion King movie and pulled all the shots of the Rock from it, and in all of those shots The Rock is looking basically at the camera or in some adjacent field to the camera.

I came here to post this as well.

I wish they wt fix the CGI and re-released this series. Totally among my faves. You guys did great for one day, but I honestly liked the big puffs of dust more. I felt it made the ancientness of the tomb more real.

Honestly, the fix is flawless. This was amazing!

Next thing to try and fix? Anything from Black Panther's climax! The CGI rhinos and perhaps more so, the fight between T'Challa and Killmonger at the end is probably the most recent example of the public taking note of VFX that could've and should've been better.

Although someone could say it's still not perfect, you guys substantially improved the shot, in ONE freaking day, without having any of the movie's budget or assets. That's definitely no mean feat, hats off to you guys :)

Definitely changed the whole spectrum of this scene. Really satisfying to watch 😎

I prefer the over-the-top, debris blasting, fire engulfing, camera shaking visual effect. Looks much more menacing.

Tbh they should automatically do these kind of light touch ups when they re-release old movies onto new Blu-ray and UHD formats. They want to get money from us by releasing an old movie and all they often do is checkboard the whole movie to up the resolution then release with minor colour corrections.

@@TheJamsplat That's how you get a George Lucas. If you go down that route you have to include the original on top of the remaster at the very least. Amping up the resolution is the only acceptable tweak there. Preservation of history is what's most important with a re-release or else classic movies and all the hard work those people did back then will be lost to time. The nostalgic movie as you remember it would seize to exist.

They still never explained why the Scorpion King was originally a good guy, and somehow ends up being an evil God type being in Egypt fix that LOL

When the Scorpion King is actually a Stevenzilla-type monster, harmless but confused as to why people are waking him up to harm him.

Overall it's better but the deepfake in some parts is scaled awkwardly, looks like the face is too small for his head.

Oh yeah, using a threshold filter with some lens or Gaussian blur and a screen blend mode works wonders for compositing. You can even use it as a cheat to get that bleach-bypassing look like Spielberg uses in Minority report.

@@NeykongTV The timer starts with 54 seconds at 5:30 in the video, and ends at 6:24. If you can do basic math and understand how minutes work, one can easily disprove your theory.

Looks much better! Much more natural looking in the face, but doesn't look as angry/ferocious as the original. Something about the eyelids, sockets, brows, etc....can't put my finger on it exactly.
