We Finally Know Why Waffle House Is So Cheap

Ойын-сауық

If you live or have lived in one of the 25 U.S. states with Waffle House locations, then odds are you've been to one. Possibly at 3 a.m. and in a state of inebriation. But whenever you went and whatever your state of mind was at the time, you likely noticed something common to every Waffle House: You get a lot of food for a pretty low price.
So how does this Southern-fried breakfast food chain, which famously stays open 24/7 through even the worst weather and other disasters, charge so little for such massive heaps of waffles and hash browns? We finally know why Waffle House is so cheap.

As a west coast person, I didn't end up in an area to make a stop at a Waffle House until I was in Kentucky for a week around 2018. Stopped in to try it just because of all I've heard of it and couldn't pass up the chance, definitely gave me those old diner feelings, sat down, older heavier black gentleman was at the counter and asked me what I was having. Told him I'd need a minute since I was new, he announced to the whole place that we had a Waffle House Virgin in today, guy was one of the happiest restaurant workers I've ever met, sang the whole time, and without a doubt the best hashbrowns I've had came from there. 10/10 would go again.

From someone who has worked for Waffle House since 2014, Waffle House employees do NOT get paid enough. Servers get "server" pay but they are not just servers, they are also cashiers, bus-boys, expeditors, dishwashers and janitors. Night shift guys always get screwed at every location i've worked at (15+). The morning shift crews get a busy rush, the second shift guys does some prep and the night shift guy is left with the mess and NEVER has enough time to clean the store and get it ready in the morning. Sure every shift is "supposed" to do their side work and have their job done but there is 0 accountability or oversight. Having a 24/7 place to eat sounds good but when you only run it with 1 or 2 people and work them overtime/to death it is just unrealistic and unsafe. Not to mention it's already harder on your body to work overnight AND night shift works 10 hours while 1st and 2nd work 7's... If anyone wants to know i'm a Rockstar 3rd shift Supervisor.

I first experienced a Waffle House just a few weeks ago in VA on my way to SC. My wife and I set out from our hotel which only served a cold breakfast and we saw WH as we headed to I-95 and decided to try it. We sat at the counter and within minutes had our bacon and eggs and hash browns served piping hot of the grill with a cup of delicious coffee! We were on the road in 20 minutes and the check was less than $20. I left a generous tip for the staff, having enjoyed their friendly banter. It reminded me of a small town diner I lived near in my childhood 60 years ago, especially watching our meals prepared on the grill before our eyes. I wish WH would expand North!

We lived in Houston, I was driving home late after work and noticed that not only was my local Waffle House empty (highly unusual) but the lights were still on. I pulled a U-ie to be certain and people's food were still on the tables! I checked the weather app, saw Harvey was on it's way, woke up my 8 months pregnant wife with our secret term stating, "I don't have time to explain, gather the important shit, we are leaving now" Pounded on the neighbor's doors (that we knew) told them flood was coming, leave now. The reason why rescue efforts during Hurricane Harvey were so successful was because the public were told to shelter in place. If everyone evacuated like you did and risked being stranded on the roadways, it would have been disasterous. Like Rita's evacuation plus flooding on top of that. We were given plenty of time to prepare with food and water for those days.

I have eaten at Waffle House's all over the country for years. I've never gotten bad service or a bad meal. My favorite meal anywhere is breakfast, and Waffle House does it right. Chunked and smothered hash browns and three scrambled eggs with extra chunked ham in them is my usual order. The wife had never eaten at a Waffle House until I took her there. Now she is usually the one who suggests going for breakfast so she can get her favorite, a waffle and covered hash browns.

I believe the secret for Waffle House's strategy is in its hash browns. WH doesn't serve French fries. I don't believe they fry anything. Everything applicable is grilled or put on the waffle grill plate. This means that food can be cooked to order. Frying requires that fry oil be kept fresh and hot. It also requires that the French fries be cooked ahead of time with limited time availability before they must be discarded. In contrast, hash browns are grilled and are cooked to order. This allows WH to keep its service level high during times of low customer turnout.

Yes, if your coffee or waffles are cold then politely ask if you can have a fresh one because the other one is cold but if you say " B#tch, looky here. This coffee is cold. What sort of place are you running here?" then expect no help. Also don't drink your whole 'cold' coffee or eat you whole waffle and then expext a new one......If something is cold and you can eat it then your won't eat the entire thing........I rarely eat out because I prefer my own cooking but when I do I don't go crazy like some people do thinking it is okay to abuse a server......It's not.

First off, I LOVE WAFFLE HOUSE (WH)!!! I am 60 years old and Waffle House was my summertime job as a DISHWASHER when I was in 6th grade!!! Oh, and I worked the 11pm-7am shift. How I got the job? I dunno... Now I look back and think, "How crazy!" But at the time I connected with all the staff there and it created a work ethic in me that I still hold today. Some of the old Jukebox songs customers and staff would play keeps me remembering that time AND now when I hear them today; Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash, Faron Young, Donna Fargo, and most importantly, Petula Clark with her song, Downtown. Oh, oh, oh, the memories. The waitresses (most mothers themselves) would caudle me as their own child and take care of me. However, I have lived in California for the past 25 years and the closest WH to me is in Arizona. In my experiences visiting these WH's is they don't fill the waffle irons with enough batter to make a 'full' waffle; there's always edges of the waffle that flatten out. I understand there is waste with the batter and it falls onto the drip pan (I had to clean them!). So I have learned to request that my waffles be full. After all, they are the "Waffle House" so present your product well. Even in this well documented video, I noticed waffles that weren't full, almost all of their edges were lacking in batter, which is concerning to me. Oh, I still cook grits to this day and order them from Georgia/South Carolina....I LOVE MY GRITS! Y'all take care.

Worked for Waffle House for 7 years and only just left a couple months ago for a career in education. A lot of this seems like bs. I worked in the Atlanta area where it's based and the pay was still around $2.75-$3.25. So I'm not sure where this $4.50 or so pay came from. And it's not common at all for customers to always get their orders within 8 minutes and leave by 20. If the store is mostly empty, absolutely. When it's full, there's so much shit going on that the food should be out at best 10-15 minutes. And customers never leave at 20 minutes. Many tables will hang out there for about an hour which severely hurts server pay. The food isn't even cheap anymore. I could get a pile of burgers with a drink and fries from McDonald's cheaper than an All-Star meal with a drink now that it's over $9 for the meal and $2 for the drink where I am plus tax and tip

The freeze-dried hash brown mix was a surprise, but if they produce good hash browns and they make WH profitable (which is the #1 way they keep prices down) then re-hydrate away! I often make my own hash browns from fresh potatoes and I can't say that they are consistently any better than those at WH. Indeed, there's a lot of variance in potato type, potato freshness, potato starchiness, and the preparation of them. Even though I'm careful, my hash browns will often suffer from this. Maybe, Waffle House needs to embrace its dehydrated mix, brand it, and sell it in stores?

Yum! ...but sadly, I live in the Pacific Northwest. However, 9 of my 67 years on this mortal coil have been spent in the deep South, and it IS Waffle Home when I am there. Three-egg scramble, hashies and mystery toast (I let the server pick) washed down with gallons of coffee. I'm drooling just thinking about it. The 'dig' on the hash browns was kinda low. I spent six years as an institutional cook. Used that style of hashies all the time. I poured a couple quarts of boiling water directly into the carton, and by the time I could hold the carton, the hashies were ready to grill. They brown up nicely and cook faster than any other style I've used. If there are "Chef Store" retailers in your area, you can find 'em...may also look at Costco. Not all stores carry them. A trick: I add about 2-3 tablespoons of minced onion to the carton before I rehydrate. Love me some onion!

I was introduced to Waffle House in 1985 while stationed at Ft. Stewart Ga. Have visited several locations when traveling but haven’t been to one since my kids were younger and at home. I want to go now after watching this video!

I used to love Waffle House. Now I can't afford their prices and their menu and their portion sizes have shrunk. In what universe are their current prices considered "cheap"?

Have you not heard of the recent massive inflation?

@Debra No WH here, but at $10 they are cheap compared to the alternative 24hr places. I see breakfast prices $12.99 and up now at other places due to inflation. Paying the TIP makes breakfast even more expensive at those places, so I stopped going after the inflation jacked all the prices.

Finally had a chance to go to one the other day. I was suprised that inflation hasn't hit this place yet... Gave the waitress a great tip...

They don't have WH in my home state, but I moved a year ago. After unhooking the moving trailer and getting my stuff into the new place, at 11 pm, we headed straight to this godsend. First food I ate as a resident of the state where I'll build my life.

What is cheap? That is my question. Because I’ve been watching the last couple of these videos as well and I agree with Manta comments these places are not cheap.

What kind of naive question is this? It’s Waffle House amazing food at great prices google the prices idk what “cheap” is to you unless you mean Ramen noodles

@@WaffleHouse247 either you’re pretty well off on money or don’t have too many mouths to feed lmao. When you take a whole family here (parents and kids) on the average income/budget, Waffle House gets expensive pretty damn quick. “Cheap” is McDonald’s or Taco Bell, not Waffle House.

Less than 4 minutes... 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣 YEAH OKAY! Idk what waffle house you go to but my local waffle house takes a good 10 minutes. Though the food is great so I'm not complaining i just never in my life have ever seen food come in 4 minutes. I once got 1 single biscuit and it took about 5 and a half minutes. Definitely recommend said biscuits very much so worth it but honestly the waffles are hands down the best waffles.

This was a great reminder of how much I enjoyed Waffle House when I was in my twenties. I have to go back. I loved all the food except eggs…allergy. What a happy video!
