Thank you to everybody who has supported the creation of these video and has shared this journey with my sailboat Karl with me so far. It would not have been the same without you.
This episode was filmed in 09 / 2020.
-
Hey, my name is Nike and I bought an aluminum 37 foot sailboat in Panama in 2013 that I named KARL. I spent a good year refitting it, mostly by myself and with the help of awesome friends, and then (mostly) solo sailed my sailboat around the western Caribbean.
In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America.
In this Episode, we paint the hull of my Reinke Super 10 with a layer of epoxy primer and two layers of copper free Antifouling. The current covid19 situation makes it tricky to go into a marina, so I take advantage of my twin keels and a strong moon tide to let my boat dry fall to get the paint job done.
After scraping and grinding the hull, I clean the bare aluminum spots and treat them with a slim layer of etch primer followed by a couple of layers of epoxy primer.
Once this is done, Maria and Paul give me a hand to slap on the Total Boat epoxy primer and the Total Boat copper free antifouling. We just finish in time before the tide comes back in.
Next up is cleaning my annodes and propellor and once I am done with that, Paul and I paint a second layer of antifouling
Karl’s bottom is looking great and it was a challenging but rewarding project to work with extremely short drying times between tides and rain showers. I am happy it all worked out but I surely don’t recommend this procedure.
And just to be clear, this procedure is surely NOT recommended by Total Boat, so don’t try this at home!!!
Enjoy and Ahoy,
Nike & Karl

Karl looks amazing! When you were down between the keels, I could see his ribs and I thought about how interesting it would have been to watch Karl under construction. It's so strange to see him out of the water with the anchor chain resting on the sand. With your painting coveralls it was like a science fiction movie, all the oceans evaporated and the ships upon the abyssal plains. Glad the world is watery and green instead!

Laying on my back in mud between keels with the tide coming in was never fun, but bilge keels do save some money on haul outs and especially handy in out-of-the-way places with tides. I take the practicality of twin keels over a deep fin anyday, once you have had a boat that needs less than 4ft of water you get spoilt for places other boats can not go.

yep twin keels are useful like that. Seem to be a lot more common on European built boats than US ones in my experience. After my own first cruising sailboat was a traditional full keel with a 4ft draft and dealing with all the problems of lots of shifting shoals and shallow water. My current boat which is on stands in my yard while i work on her at the moment, is a flat-bottomed sailing scow designed to be beached. And you'd be surprised just how much space you can fit into a 38ft sailing scow.

You know, I was just wondering about your twin keeled boat; it seems like a brilliant solution to not only being able to beach your vessel and get underneath it, but also, if you are so unlucky to run into a reef and get yourself stuck waiting for the tide, which is usually falling. These are such scary times for a fin keeled boat; waiting for the tide to go down so the side of your vessel is now slamming up against rock from the chop. And now water is coming over the gunnel. Talk about a sinking feeling!! But I would guess you don't have these worries if you run aground with twin keels?

Boats with a bilge keel (2 keels) are very popular in the UK. The tidal range is 49 feet (15 meters) there! That's a lot. I know that some French marinas in the Bay of Biscay has a lock, so the non-bilge keel boats don't get damaged. The largest tidal range of 16.3 metres (53.5 feet) occurs in Bay of Fundy, Canada.

We did it this way because the marina would have been a corona trap at the time, not letting the boats leave anymore once inside. It is debatable if the environmental impact is a lot less in a marina in these areas, but obviously that’s the place where things like this usually SHOULD take place. This was more of an “emergency set up”.

You didn't need to use acetone to clean, alcohol works fine. Though I guess the price of ethanol has gone up recently ;) Edit- Acetone is great for bare metal, but if you still have paint on the surface alcohol is better because it won't damage the old paint.

Just to lend support to you, Nike. You’ve done a great job in the circs that faced you in the corona lockdown. You’re also well respected as a long-standing champion for the environment. And let’s face it your lifestyle has minimal impact on the planet. Most of us can’t match your frugality. Some of who have posted here have rushed to judgement, as armchair folk tend to do. FWIW, both as a mariner and an environmentalist, I fully support the imaginative and professional way you set about this project. None of us can be perfect. There is never zero risk. But let’s hear it for an inspirational adventurer who is making the best of a challenging period for people everywhere; and sharing her stories so creatively, to the benefit of thousands of us unable to sail away right now. Go, Nike! 🎉👍🏼💯

Thanks for ur kind words, Roy. I can understand that people are getting upset about this procedure. And we could have done better, it’s true. There have been some good recommendations about tools that would prevent the dust to fly around...just being in a marina would not make any difference...but different machines could help. Using a ton of plastic tarps, not sure if that is more ecological but anyhow... I am not promoting this as the new way to go 🙈 this was due to the lock down during corona. But of course I could have just waited... It’s surely not super easy to be judged by some people so harshly, knowing how much we do for the environment. But as I said, it’s also understandable. Especially from people who don’t know what the conditions in Marinas are like down here 😂 and that just going there won’t make much of a difference 🙈. Anyhow, it’s sweet to read some uplifting lines. It helps to keep pushing forward ☺️ Cheers, Nike

Did you ever live in England at all, maybe southern England? Anyway, one of the best type of boating videos to me is to see them beached or leant against a wall for bottom work, so thank you for these hull on the beach episodes! Taunton and the west country share a similarly nice landscape to your homeland, though I have to say, Germany always looks like they've just tidied up, vacuum cleaned and put a fresh coat of pain on. @@WhiteSpotPirates Yes, There is something about your more recent videos that is noticiebly better. New editors?...you took a camera course?...Does not matter. You are lovelier each time. You are forging ahead. Maintain the course!

@@seriousviewer5528 I started editing myself 🙈 it surely helps for the filming, too, because I see and feel in the editing process what or how I should have filmed it better. I am very happy to hear it’s actually showing improvement since these are my very first videos I edited ever 🥰🙏🏼

Where did you get the fresh water for washing down the boat? Rain water?

Yes, rain water, exactly. And also, there is a dock near by with water from a lake where we can fill up in case of no rain 👍

Nike ... I grew up soaking up math & science ... Dad was a Research Engineer and I took to Math & Science like a Duck takes to Water ... I was so good at it I not only got a BS in Mathematics but an MBA in Quantitative Methods of Analysis & Finance ... flew supersonic aircraft in the USAF, taught HS Math for a year & then went into federal law enforcement chasing White Collar criminals for which i seemed custom made ... all this being said, I want you to know you are, Bar None, one of the most fascinating technical problem solvers I've come across in my entire career ... as Renee Zellweger said to Tom Cruise ... you complete me ... Bonne continuation. Amitiés. Olivier.
