I'm a auto painter and for us dry/cure time is based on temperature, air flow and humidity. Temperature being the biggest factor. These for me are based on 20c 50% humidity. The humidity is not helping you, but if it's 30c and windy you could push your coating times considerably. I would recommend not letting coatings "flash off" in direct sunlight because it may cause the outer layer to cure and skim over before the deeper solvents have a chance to evaporate causing incomplete curing of the coating under the "skin" and potential delamination.

As far as i know Nike uses 2K Epoxy coating, that means 2 components react chemically and there is no need of evaporating solvente. The temperature ist the most ifluencing factor to the curing Time.

Great video I’m tired just watching all the work. Glad to see an alternative to copper based paints. I remember my dad repainting the bottom of our 26’ cabin cruiser in the late 50’s he used copper based paint. Stay safe and I can’t wait for the finished paint project. Fred in Texas

So true. I used to work in a boat yard and fully realize how big that job is, and we didn't have to lay in wet sand! Although, actually, I think I would prefer that to the filthy asphalt we laid on. Her friends are the best!

Ok I’m hooked! I can’t resist a sailor maintaining their boat. Just subscribed. When’s the next one?

Tristin Jones: Sailed against the Humboldt Current, South down the Pacific Coast of South America in a tiny twin keel sailboat to Chilie. He had to tack the entire way. It took month and months to do so. Then he loaded his boat on a flat bed truck to the highest altitude navigable lake in the world to sail Lake Titicaca then hacked his way through the jungle down stream to come out the Southern tip of the massive Continent to Argentina then proceeded to sail back to England. I can't recall if that segment of his adventure was successful but I can tell you this tiny twin keeled sailboat still exists. A common complaint about twin keel sailboat boats is they are slower. No single keel sailboat has come close to the records set by Tristin Jones and his tiny twin keel wooden boat.

Marinas have water blasters, and tools to make this job significantly easier. They, more importantly, have drainage that does not discharge directly to the sea so that the anti foul does not pollute the ocean/environment. Marinas make the job easier so that a regular scheduled anti-foul keeps the hull clean so that significantly less fuel is used. It is one thing to love your surroundings/environment, it is another to respect it and cherish it for future generations. Yes, I'm a grumpy old sailor but after 50 years on the water, I have seen the decline of our beautiful environment and worry a lot that we have compromised those that follow us. Being a huge fan of twin-keels myself I regularly pull over (dry out) and give my boat a quick scrape and anti foul, without sanding. Means I haul out every second year and sand and grind then. Saves money and keeps hull efficiency at near max all the time, also saving money, and a better consideration of the environment. The only extra is my own labour by jumping out and scraping more often, which, strangely, I enjoy, but then , New Zealand is a place to be enjoyed....respectfully.

Very well written. I am always amused by these young people that profess to love the ocean but they don't respect it. By reading the comments it is painfully obvious how many morons there are. I saw another young lady sailor scraping and spray painting her gas bottle while moored in harbor. All the paint chips and over spray from the paint going guess where? This is why you see the decline in the marine environment, but young people dismiss their own behavior and blame it on climate change. Makes you shake your head in I will use the word dismay.

Living on nothing is not so green after all. WSP gaffed here. But you know that all that ocean plastic? It is predominantly properly disposed of by predominantly right thinking people using recycling practices...... Yet still ends up in the ocean. I wonder what happens to the marina facilities' drainage used by responsible sailors? But yes. We should each still keep trying to do our bit and hope that it is allowed to have an effect.

The last antifouling was two years ago but what’s more impressive is that I last scraped the hull a month before I beached it. So u see that it really does make a difference to have or not to have antifouling paint 🙈 four years will probably have produced some impressive underwater reef 😂

Yeah unfortunately the foot is only back to 70% but I can surely get around. Each morning it’s a battle to get the foot going but once it’s going it’s doing alright but surely not back to normal and still dealing with pain but all below a level that I have to take pain killers which is great. The foot surely was a little grumpy after this marathon and punished me a bit. But it was great to see that I am able to power through a project like this with it. 👍

@@WhiteSpotPirates yes ok 70% is pretty good for the time period. i broke my hip racing against my young nephew years ago and had it replaced and after a year or so i couldnt even tell it was done, now i jog, ,play tennis n golf, bike and sail. so it just takes time for the body to adjust to the new screws pins etc

Mix in cyan pepper with your bottom paint .Don`t laugh because barnicles dont like hot stuff. Ive seen it long ago in an article. . It works. Good luck.

the Westerly is a British twin keel boat. The keel bolts can leak. Be careful not to beach on a super high tide or you will have to wait until another super high tide to float it off the beach.

Great video, its nice to have the hard part of the job done. Quick question, what is the purpose of coating a steel hull with epoxy? I thought it was only used on fiberglass hulls to prevent bubbling/pitting.

My boat is aluminum. First u put on an etch primer on the bare metal to make sure the paint sticks well. Then it’s followed usually by 5 (or more) layers of epoxy primer before the antifouling goes on. It keeps the metal protected from electrical currents (from the outside, not ur own internal mess ups obviously 😂) or galvanic corrosion when sitting next to a steel boat or dock. Also, u need something between the metal and the antifouling because the antifouling won’t grab onto the bare aluminum, ad far as I understand. On a steel boat u would want the primer to prevent rusting, I would say. But I am not a pro on this...🙈 but this would be my personal explanation.

😂😂 the one before this one went really fast so I got a bit over ambitious 😂. But we had a bunch of rainy days lately so I took advantage of that to get some editing in. Honestly, I have no idea how this is gonna work if I actually sail around again, but let’s worry about that when it happens 😂. It’s surely time consuming and I have to make sure I structure and organize myself a bit better than before...also I don’t want to be overly stressed by it which is why I won’t promise weekly production anymore...if I can make it happen then that’s great, if not, then not. But right now it’s going well, I just finished the raw cut of the next one, so next Friday is most likely safe as well 🤞🏼😎

If you do this again in two years, I will come help for a week. I don't even care if we don't get a chance to go sailing. I used to work in a boatyard and I grew up on a farm, so I know about hard hot work, and mosquitos. LOL. One thing that I would recommend is to use a floor scraper for the initial scraping. It goes a lot faster. I will go fishing when the tide is up, and we can't work. Hopefully we would have some fish to grill the next day. I can taste that shark now!

😂😂😂 I was wondering if anybody would pick the up. I first had stopped the audio before that but the end always sounds weird without sound so I just extended the audio of the clip without the picture and I had to laugh when I heard what it revealed. It was me saying “hair of the dooog” and then Paul was whistling for Luca. We had had a couple of drinks the night before and were all a little tired and hung over that day which does not help when u spend the day in the heat and grinding below keels 😂😂😂

I was scraping the bottom of my boat the other day, I am only half done on it, it wasn't too bad. I can tell you that consistent attention on your bottom can help a lot.

Yes, I see ur point with the tarp. It’s not that we did not discuss environmental effects of this project and different possibilities on what to do about it. Frankly, most of the dust flies away immediately and would not be captured by a tarp...if u did capture sth with a tarp, then how do u proceed with the tarp and the dust? Store it forever? Burn both of them together (might be a bigger pollution all together in my eyes), keep it until u reach land and dispose of it? Which means out of sight out of mind? panama works with landfills, so the disposed tarp and dust eventually would release their poison into the ground water as well. Use a reusable tarp not made of plastic (which I don’t have but maybe maybe could have Organized it somehow) is another possibility, but how and where do u then get rid of the dust? I am happy for suggestions on this topic so next time we can improve this. Because frankly, the situation when u haul out in a marina is exactly the same so it would be good to improve the procedure for the next time. To me, it’s important to look at the effect as a whole and to see where all of it ends up. A tarp looks good at first glance but in our eyes it was a bigger pollutant than help in this case. A grinder with a vacuum attached somehow, maybe that would help. Not sure if it exists for grinders, only seen it for sanders so far. But will do a google search... But yes, it’s a tricky topic and I am aware that a bottom job in general is not good for the environment. We do try to give back to nature, though, and have cleaned many beaches and recycle a lot of “wild plastic”. It’s not an excuse but at least a little payback for this yearly pollution (well, I actually did not do my hull in two years, so I saved one year of pollution 🙈).

@@WhiteSpotPirates I totally understand your dilemma, didn't mean to sound too critical. I believe you are aware and just as concerned about micro plastics and pollution and were faced with the raw reality of the circumstances and limited options. To answer/respond to a few of your points.... As for dust control there are several angle grinders which have dust collection measures Makita, Bosch, most are for concrete grinding and don't really fully achieve what you might say is acceptable performance in this application. Festool PI571810 Rotex 6 in. Multi-Mode Sander with mesh weave sanding pads paired with a substantial cyclone dust trap and hepa filler vacuume is the best option I know of, but not at all readily available, affordable or realistic in this situation. As for tarps I would choose a large reuseable option and vacuume any collected dust up, but again, unless you hang substantial drop curtains to prevent/limit airbourne dispersal it would be difficult to achieve effective results. As to the waste, the best way I know of disposing of collected toxic dust/fine particles is to consolidate them somehow....incoproporate them in old paint, resin, concrete blocks for reuse or landfill (arguably better than burning)......this does not eliminate the toxicity, but goes someway to lock up the particles from freely effecting the environment. I guess best practices for removing bottom paint would be to wet abrasive blast or dry ice blast the bottom, but this requires haul out, controlled environment, and significant and dedicated infrastructure and mechanisms to collect the material (probably not available anywhere near where you are and most likely impossible to organise in these difficult times). I think you live an amazing life, face so many challenges and applaud most of your efforts to minimise environmental impact, guess its just one of those dilemmas where forced compromises leave a slightly bitter aftertaste. (I certainly could do better, try harder to minimise environmental impact in my life, so am not condeming you)

Problem is, so few bilge keel boats are built. I don’t think the prejudice against them is warranted, after all, how many cruising yachts “race” or really need to extract the last knot of speed.

You found a beauty spot and calm conditions for that daunting job, judging by the fouling maybe do this again a little sooner next time. I live in the back of beyonds in Ireland and chose a lifting keel so as to do exactly the same plus the anodes of course; its an annual chore 😩 a really hard job but you made it look fun and light work - there is great satisfaction in a clean hull - lovely video thank you👌👍🤗 but every Spring and it lasts the year, needs it f

Yeah I did not plan to let it slack for that long but having surgery and laying in bed for three month did not help to keep the yearly schedule up...as much as I like to put all my energy into my boat, I think health has slight priority over bottom growth...😂 It was quite the job for sure but it helped that it was in such a nice setting. Although that also caused some extra stress on it all. But at least not the usual “each day longer on the hrs costs big $$” stress ☺️. All in all I am glad it’s done and Karl moves smoothly again.

You are tougher than me. Yard work is hard enough in a yard, with power, showers, and a chandlery. But on the beach! No thanks, a dozen times over.

I watch your channel because you continue to tackle challenges in such amazing places and ways. Do you remember the open air sail loft in Colombia? Thanks for bringing us along.

That’s Guatemala you are thinking of, I believe. Oh I have very fond memories of that time in Tom’s sail loft. We got a shit load done and Tom is a beautiful souls to hang out with, so time flew by even though there was so much work to be done.

I have been cruising for seven years now and I think that both single handing and sailing with crew / partner have their pros and cons. I enjoy having my space where I can retreat to to be by myself, yeah, that’s definitely a big plus of single handing. But I am not single handing because I don’t like to have a partner with me on board or because it’s my preferred way of life style. Just have not found someone that’s able to bare my company for longer periods of time and vice versa, not even to mention having to accept my marriage to Karl 😂🙈

Ur to cute. Nike you are one of the hardest working people I know of. "I bless you".

It was a bit hard, like yard work always is...just because it’s usually a lot in a couple of days with no break in between. In yard it’s usually Marina costs that drive u to work fast, in this case it was the moon tide only leaving 6-8 days for us to still make it off the beach 😂. But yes, once the prep is all done and the fresh paint is on, it’s extremely rewarding. And knowing I don’t have to scrape the hull every month now is even a better reward!

How did you manage to look so clean when grinding under the hull? I looked like a member of the Blue Man Group when I took off my old anti foul.

😂 luckily the antifouling was mostly gone so we were mainly grinding barnacle feet which are white and not blue or black (in my case) . Maybe they don’t stick as well as antifouling dust 😂. I tried to grind away from my face, too, which obviously not always works. I still thought I had quite the bunch sitting on my face in the end. I think it’s inevitable to some extent except if u wear a full face cover.

So nice of karl to lend a helping hand and holding himself up. Pretty impressive bottom growth. How was the sailing? Did you notice significant slow down?

Oh yes! There was a decent amount of slow down due to growth. Even right after scraping it was still quite a bit just from the roughness of the hull.

Hi Yes I have had to do that too what a job? I must have scraped off a ton of muscles unedable to since I was in the harbaour against the wall. it took two tides to clear off the sea food. once afloat the fish had a good feed and the crabs too. I hope you had fun. bye Tom in Scotland.

That black epoxy you put on, will that prevent the moss in the future or is it just further protection? I dont think i saw you this last time.

In this Episode I did not paint yet, that’s coming up tomorrow. Or are u talking about the pain trial? In that case: the white stuff is an epoxy primer which is for protection of the hull and the black stuff is antifouling which is protection against growth, yes. 👍

This yard marathon with no break inbetween and lots of physical work surely cause a bit of pain for the foot. But at least it waited till after yard work to reveal itself 😂
