Know a woman who opened CC accounts and utilities in all 5 of her kids names. When they got old enough to move out they couldn't even rent an apartment or get electric turned on. 😢
I used to work for A Big Bank, and this happens more than you want to know. Fraud from someone you don't know is bad enough, when people you love do it, it's worse.

One day years ago I met a young lady at the Dept of Motor Vehicles. I was there to get my license renewed but she was there because out of state SISTER had fraudulently gotten a NC Drivers License using the sisters information - and then proceeded to rack up massive speeding tickets. The lady I met didn't know about this until she attempted to get her license renewed and found that her license was blocked/cancelled (for non payment, failure to appear in court, and repeated speeding). How horrible to be betrayed by a loved one.

You will need to file a police report against your relative in most states to clear this up. A lot of people wont do this because they dont want to get the family member in trouble. They however had no problem with you getting into financial trouble.

Someone filed an unemployment claim under my husband's name a couple of months ago. And he still works for the same company. It was easy to battle since the company told him right away and he still worked there, so money was not transferred anywhere. But police refused to do anything about it since nobody actually stole any money from him. They just told him to come back when someone actually takes him money. Mmm, Colorado Springs police. But when you call them when the crime actually happened (hit and run, happened to me and my friend on separate occasions, and a case of theft), they say they are busy and if ambulance is not needed, then it's not too serious and they are not coming.

The collection agencies work together. When the statute of limitations is coming up, those accounts about to age out get sold to a new collection agency which restarts the process. A friend of mine settled a debt with a collection agency and she got a notice stating that the debt amount had bee paid to the collection agency. The agency sold the unsettled remainder of the debt to another agency; the new agency changed the date and went after her for the remainder citing that the notice she had received did not acknowledge the debt paid in full.

Call the cc company and tell them you called after her death and they said they would take care of it but didn't. Pay what you used (airline ticket) and be done, closed, finished.
Oh Hell no. You did not sign the application for that card, Easy to get that handled. You're looking to buy a house; they've dinged your credit. You might have an action against them. Other than that would be bad advice.
Was the late mother a victim of Alzheimer's, in taking out so many credit cards?? If you ever cancel via a phone call, immediately send a registered letter confirming the transactions!! Email's might not be enough legal evidence in case of fraud... Maybe all high school seniors at the age of 17-3/4 years should pull their credit report to see if the parents have defrauded the children??
I guess that is the kind of legacy that she was willing to leave. Sad that her son had to find out.
Send them a copy of a police report and they have to close it

To be honest when my younger 2 daughters were still in high school I added them as authorized users on my old navy card so they could go buy some clothes. Later he discovered that his wife had also opened a bank account in her name and had been building it by slowly transferring funds from their joint checking accounts without his knowledge (she did not work outside the home) in order to buy a piece of property for herself.
