WE DIDN'T FEEL WELCOME HERE - Van Life in the French Riviera

The French Riviera is beautiful, BUT we just couldn't fit in. With beautiful cliffside views of the blue Mediterranean Sea we were easily able to populate a bucket list of sites we wanted to see. However, the more we researched the more we realized the narrow winding streets with limited parking was just not a welcome spot for our van life travel style. And although we found ourselves passing by many iconic spots, we still managed to get down into the action in one of the most famed places on the coast. Yes, today is moving day and we have decided it is time to leave France.
Cheers

You hit the bullseye Snow with the accompanying music about money. The South of France does everything it can to make it as difficult as possible for van travellers. They want to "reserve" it for the elites, rich and famous. Such a shame. It used to be one of the most pleasant places to be when I was young in the 70ties and 80ties.

Have a blast in Italy! As anywhere in the world, be cautious in larger cities, especially Rome, when parking the van. We've camped outside of larger cities and then taken public transportation into the city center.

You guys must come to Portugal, here you will find lots of camping sites and amazing friendly people. As far as tunnels, if you pass through the San Sebastian region in Spain / Basque Country area, you will definitely see much more tunnels. Last time I went driving there, on my way to France, I stopped counting at 80 tunnels in a 2 hours drive.

Portugal was by far, the one place I felt like I had lived there in another life. It is absolutely beautiful and I was treated by everyone I met, like I WAS a part of their families. It breaks my heart that I will never walk those streets, watch the largest surfing wave or be inside a palace that doesn't have any equals , nor will I breathe that air again. I hope, when I do leave this life, that I will have a chance once again to be where I once belonged. ❤

I also saw a lot of very nice resting spots with restaurants, bathrooms, playgrounds, etc, in German roads. I travelled a few thousand km in European roads, twice, and generally avoided larger cities. When the time came to visit Rome I opted to leave the car safely parked in a smaller town and took the train.

I agree with the height restrictions on the parking. I'm a disabled traveller, We've travelled down that way before and found I needed my mobility scooter to get out and about in but there are some campsites near the coast but you'd need to use either bikes or ubers to get into the main towns. We stayed in Biot a small walk to the beach, just outside Antibes and the train ran along the coast to Nice.

Enjoyed your video, especially the nighttime overlook of Monaco. Very much noticing the lack of the kind of freedom you experienced in South America though. But Europe is different and you just have to get used to it. Public transport is good here, not sketchy like Greyhound buses, and the trains and metro systems are really excellent. 🙂

Hi guys. Great videos as always. I live in England and travel extensively around Europe. It is increasingly becoming very expensive and very unsafe in any way. Pre pandemic, my area in london was one of the safest places you could live. Now, not a day goes by without a house being broken in or a car being stolen from the driveways. I will definitely rethink about my retirement living plan in a few years. Santa Catarina in Brazil is really calling me very loudly. Good weather, amazing beaches and mountains, excellent value for money and it doesn’t give me the unsecured feeling that I experience in Europe right now. Anyway, enough moaning. Good travels, be safe and super enjoy the best of it all in Italy.

Very congested, not very green, extremely regulated, and the playground for rich dudes with gold plated cars from Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and the like. But as always, I’m glued to the screen when you make a move. I think you’ll enjoy Italy a lot, very friendly and great food. But lots of crime in many areas, you will have to be extremely careful. Monaco 😊😊😊 mmm, mmm,’mmm, how beautiful, I could live on one of those yacht’s, maybe if we pool all our money together lol. But seriously, that was an amazing drive, thanks for sharing that, little ole me would never be able to see these beautiful countries, hugs and kisses to you for sharing this with us. Oh and of course hugs and kisses to you sweet kitties, I love how you make sure they are happy whenever they go, I would do the same with mine, in fact just a short story if you have time. I never had kitties growing up and not as an adult, it was always dogs, and I am 65 now, but 5 years ago I was divorced and living in an apartment, a friend found 3 kittens in his barn and asked me to find a home for them because he couldn’t find the mom, my vet said they were about 4 weeks old, I had no idea how to take care of cats, they have a whole different personality than dogs , and I wasn’t supposed to have animals in my apartment, so I had to keep them hid. I fell in love with these little ones, I looked for homes for them but when it came time to part with them I couldn’t do it 😭, so I soon searched for a house where they would be happy running up and down stairs and looking out windows, they even have a grassy area that is fenced in to lay in the grass in the summer and chew on the blades. I know how you must love your kitties ❤❤. Thanks for you time, see you soon in Italy!!!! 😊😊😊😊 Your friend from Michigan, Susie

Hello Snow Hello Curt, happy you guys are back to your regular selves and feeling strong again from that sickness. Thank you guys so very very much for the beautiful tour around Monaco and peek of Italy. Both of you are such amazing people/friends/family, I love you guys. Please be very careful with your surroundings and wherever you park to stay over night, I just get afraid for bad things to happen to good sweet people like you guys. Guys stay safe - warm and healthy. Please kiss the kitties for me. Anxiously waiting for your new video. 🙏🥰♥️

I can fully understand why you fled from Périgueux to the French Riviera because of the weather but as you found out it's not that motorhome or caravan friendly. You really did miss a lot of beautiful French departments, Lot, Aveyron, Tarn and more. Hopefully you will return sometime as you will find a more friendly welcome, lots of free or cheap safe aire de services in the most beautiful villages.

You really missed out on France, the atlantic coast lines are so rough and great and lots of space for a big car. You should have started at the other ocean :-) We are going by car this pre summer until atlantic Spain. Is such a great nature trip. France has paid roads but they also have non paid roads, its how much time you have to drive through. ps the Riviera of France is one of the most expensive parts in France its not like that everywhere.

We will be back to France... We will see it all! But, we only have 90 days in the Schengen zone, so we are headed to eastern Europe to pop out for 90 days. It's called the Schengen Shuffle and it is a pain, but it's what we have to do as non EU citizens 😊 we will zig zag across the continent many times over the next three years!

I would have loved to see you meet the lovely Ame in a Van, her parents also live in their conversion and they're often around in the south of France. Ame loves the French Riviera, she could have given you pointers on where/how to park for free, she knows the tricks and she's often alone! 🤔🤗❤️

I love your music choices and the history lessons included. Geographical wonders, animals and birds. Sunsets OMG - ocean views ❤ We love you guys ! Edited : kitties on leashes, unique and getting exercise . Fun stuff ! Sunshine helps lots in the short days of winter, get your Vitamin D

We rarely use the toll roads as it’s so much nicer passing through the towns and villages where you can stay on the aires. Never stay overnight on the motorway aires as unsafe.

Thank you for another beautiful video of France and Monaco! 😃 👍🏻 we watch ALL your videos and couldn't help having a smile when we heard that the French are the best and most courteous drivers. As a European I think it's pretty bad in France and their drivers. It's the only country where I don't feel safe driving and I've been all over Europe. But I'm glad you went through it safely. 👍🏻👍🏻

Given that most of that area has been continuously occupied since ancient times it makes sense that the roads are smaller. A lot more history to work with. Also Marseille has a bad reputation in France, but the reality is more complex. My wife spent a semester in Aix en Provence with no problems way back in the last century. Most people train in and then rent cars to get around if they're going there to visit. Next time you're in the area find a safe spot to park and then go toodle around for a couple of days!
