Not *A* zombie movie but *THE* zombie movie. The ending is a gut punch and hurts on so many levels, even today, and still feels (unfortunately) very relevant. So glad you’re watching this classic. 🖤

My all time favorite movie! Barbara wasn't turning into zombie. She was basically going catatonic, you also have to remember this was the late 60s so reaction to a black man, hitting a white woman in a movie, I can only imagine that reaction, also adding to that. As Zay pointed out did they not see Ben's gun? We don't know. Did they shoot think he was a zombie or for other reasons.. I loved the soundtrack and the hard black and white cuts. It was originally called "Night of the flesh eaters" on your rating scale for me its a solid 9.999 however I understand your ratings and commentary 100% An idea to make a movie, an experiment that spawned a genre, its no surprise this movie is preserved by the library of congress. At the start Johnny told her "They're coming to get you Barbara!" At the end, turns out he was correct. Okay im going to stop geeking out lol thank you so so much for watching this.

Every time I watch it I see something different to appreciate about it.

With this movie, George Romero invented what we now know of as zombies. This was the very first true zombie movie. The term zombie originated in the 1800s and there are movies that predate this one which utilize zombies of a different variety (ie White Zombie, I Walked with a Zombie) but they are not what we would refer to as zombie movies today. This film was written by George Romero and John Russo. However, due to philosophical differences between the two, they split up and each made their own zombie franchises which are both sequels to this movie. George Romero created the Dead series (Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, etc), and John Russo created the Return of the Living Dead series.

Great movie but I would say that the earlier films had the "true" zombies that were based on real voodoo superstition. The Comic Code Authority banned the use of "Zombie" in comic books but in the 70s they began using the word "zuvembie" to sneak zombies under the radar. The term was invented by Robert E. Howard for his 1938 story "Pigeons From Hell."

You have to keep in mind that this was the first of this kind of zombie movie. Before this all of the zombies were created by Voodoo. So George was writing all of the rules himself and making this film with very little money. So the characters in the film didn't have all of the info that you did. I have met George Romero when I got to act in a small film he directed for his son's film class. He was a very nice guy, and yes he is tall.

There are movies like that but this one is one of the best to give you that feeling throughout. Dawn Of The Dead (1978) is also a great movie and worth seeing.,

That was the FIRST . Not really the first movie with Zombies in it . But the Beginning of the Zombie lore in film , and the film that Launched every zombie film we know today. Fun Fact is , Romero filmed this basically as a graduate student of film school. He filmed it on 16 MM film, with practically no budget. He DID NOT copyright the film. Therefore it is in the Public domain, and ANYONE can remake it at will , and as we know over the years several have. Still , the next decade after this film was made, we saw the crafting , and finessing of the Zombie Lore by Romero , and other writer/directors.ALSO..YES Romero used the small "red Herring " Moments cleverly , and subtly in the film . This film has become a cult classic because of the incredible level of production value considering the budget of only $100,000 bucks. Incredibly low , even for that time.

If you want another great, classic horror movie, Black Christmas from 1974 is the original slasher film. You don’t see a lot of the violence, but it’s filmed in a terrifying way. It was filmed in Canada and many of the SCTV crew were involved in the cast, as well as Keir Dullea from 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s a great horror movie, but in colour.

Plenty of comments here arguing semantics. The fact is, prior to this film a zombie was essentially a golem. A being that was created through magic to do it's master's bidding. ... The concept of an apocalypse of the dead reanimating en-masse with a desire to consume the living was brand new in 1968. What we think of today as a "Zombie" started with this film and George Romero. R.I.P.

I loved your review but, I wonder if you would have rated this film higher if you were more aware that this film was number one, a low budget film and the first of it's kind. There simply were no zombie films before this one, Night of the Living Dead was the creation of the entire genre. Another big thing you younglings might appreciate is the fact that at the time this film was made, the role of Ben as a hero character as a black man was simply unheard of at the time. You guys seemed to be completely unaware that when this film was made, the idea that a black man would star in a film in which he is the smartest character was totally groundbreaking. The genius of this film appeared on a number of fronts that made this a groundbreaking cultural impact statement in it's time, but because it's also a terrifying horror film, the cultural statements it makes aren't even questioned by the audience. Night of the Living Dead is an artistic achievement that became a timeless classic for many many reasons. Also - This film was made shortly after color film became the standard, it actually cost more to produce it in B&W because B&W film was being phased out and was more expensive than color film at the time.

Something to keep in mind: the series splits in two after this. George Romero went on to make the '___ of the Dead' series, while his cohort, Russo, went on to make the Return of the Living Dead. So, if you want to watch them in order, this film is always the start. Then, for Romero's classics, it's pretty easy (Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead). I suggest watching Dawn and Day first, then hit Return of the Living Dead. The two branches from this film have pretty drastic tone differences. This movie also got a remake in the 90's worth watching.

Night Of The Living Dead (1968) is the birth of the modern zombie, but George A. Romero & John A. Russo pulled inspiration and material for their script from the first film adaptation of I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, The Last Man On Earth (1964) starring Vincent Price. I highly recommend checking that film out, especially if you’ve seen the 3rd adaptation of I Am Legend (2007) starring Will Smith, (the second adaptation is The Omega Man (1971) starring Charlton Heston-The Smith adaptation pulls most of its story from that one. The creators of the second adaptation wanted to go in a pointedly different direction than the Price adaptation and made the antagonists a vampiric cult rather than the ‘ghouls’ that inspired Night Of The Living Dead.) Return Of The Living Dead (1985) is my all-time favorite film. I highly recommend checking it out. Within the story of Return, the film is made out to be a sequel to Night, (they reference Night as an event that happened,) but it is not actually a sequel. It is, however, a Horror Comedy and in my opinion the epitome of the Horror Comedy genre. *In short: Romero gets to use “…Of The Dead” & Russo gets to use “…Living Dead,” for their subsequent film titles. Return Of The Living Dead 3 (1993) is really the only sequel of that off-shoot worth watching, and it is more of a Brian Yuzna Body Horror film than a Zombie Horror film. The Italian film by Lucio Fulci’s Zombie (1979) was marketed as a sequel to Night, it is not, (obviously,) but it is also worth watching. Now, to the actual sequel. Dawn Of The Dead (1978,) by George A. Romero is the second installment of Romero’s Dead series, (though most people place the focus on the initial trilogy,) is more of a Horror Comedy than the Drama that Night Of The Living Dead was. Complete with far more overt social commentary than what was presented in Night. Dawn Of The Dead also introduces famed special effects master Tom Savini, (though he’d worked on Deranged (1974,) a film based on the story of Ed Gein, and starring Roberts Blossom-Whom you may know as the old man from Home Alone (1990.),) most people are unfamiliar with that film. Anyway, the only thing to know going into Dawn is that the color of the makeup was a mistake and the color correction made it look more blue than was intended-Some people can’t get past that, though it’s not hard to just acknowledge it, “that’s weird, but it is what it is,” and move on. The third film, Day Of The Dead (1985,) is less comedy than probably either of the previous two films. The opening scenes of the film were also shot in my hometown of Fort Myers, Florida. Land Of The Dead (2005,) comes on the heels of the ‘what if we totally missed the point’ remake, Dawn Of The Dead (2004,) by Zack Snyder and James Gunn. That same year we also get Horror Comedy inspired by Romero’s film Shaun Of The Dead (2004.) Land & Shaun being other sides of the coin to the Dawn remake. All of the aforementioned films are absolutely worth checking out. I’d also like to recommend Night Eats The World (2018;) Little Monsters (2019;) Cargo (2017.) 🙏🏼☺️ Godspeed

Imagine seeing this for this first time at 8yrs old. 😉 most of us saw it when we were kids from the time it came out in the 60s on through the 80s. ❤️🎃 It's been an amazing experience to watch the genre expand and grow over the decades! I'm a fan of all the kinds of zombies...everyone has to come from somewhere! 😀👍

This movie is a classic! Shot for a minimum budget in Western Pennsylvania e using local actors. Pittsburghers are so proud of it and the cameo from a legend in horror show hosts, Bill Cardille. He hosted the local horror show, Chiller Theater, for many years. RIP George Romero and "Chilly" Billy Cardille.

This movie is the birth of modern horror. Dawn of the Dead (78) and Day of the Dead (85) are the direct Romero sequels... Return of the Living Dead is like alternate universe, flipped on its head sequel, originally written by the cowriter of this film but then totally rewritten as a comedy by the writer of Alien.

For next Halloween season, put the follow up sequel on your list: Return of the Living Dead from 1985. It’s an absolute gem that did well in theaters. It has a comedic edge and one of the most beloved zombies in the genre! Trust me, you’ll love it.

Not sure if it was intentional but the slow-building details on the outbreak really reminded me of Orson Welles' War Of The Worlds radio play from a few decades earlier. If you liked how they revealed information in this movie, I'd recommend listening to this adaptation. It's available on KZread. 85 years old this October 30th and still chilling. If you do, be sure to look up details on the original broadcast's reception and even the days leading up to it, absolutely wild. The Smithsonian's website has a great article on it.

Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead are the original sequels. The spin off sequels are Return of the Living Dead and so on. The spin offs are the movies that introduced zombies eating brains. There are 4 versions of Dawn of the Dead, I would recommend either the Extended version or the European version to watch.

This movie didn't create Zombies, it just brought the concept out of it's settings in the past and in to today's world, (along with other underlying issues) which was a new thing in 1968. This movie is considered a classic in several ways, including it was the beginning of the genre of horror films that followed, much like The Exorcist is considered the Granddemon of all devil possessed movies.

Saw this at the Drive-In when it came out. We were all tripping and so glad it was in b/w There's Dawn Of The Dead, Day Of The Dead & Diary Of The Dead. Return Of The Living Dead has nothing to do with George Romero. He sued for using "The Living Dead" in their title which is why that term was never used again. This movie was made on a shoestring budget using local community actors. Well done despite that.

You have to appreciate the irony of having the black character be the last man standing when, by the horror flicks of the 80's, the cliche was if there was a black dude, he was going to be the first one killed.

  • @deathfab

Guys, I think, now you've done the original night of the living dead, now do the night of the living dead remake. Then do dawn of the dead original, then dawn of dead remake. Then do day of the dead, then skip day of the dead remake. Then go straight to land of the dead. This was the original and first modern day zombie film. It was a risk on every level including making a black man the lead and then shooting him at the end. Was that because they made a mistake or did they see a black man and just shoot? Also if they had listened to Cooper they would of been fine. Unless something happened in the basement with his daughter. But there's 6 of them down there so who knows. Although this one is great and the original, my favourite has always been day of the dead. Its just down right depressing and grim. Night is a close close 2nd.
