"We can't ask Beethoven is this an F sharp?" W.D. Seiffert, Henle • Living the Classical Life Ep106
"The Henle Company was formed in 1948 with the permission of the American military government"
Ever wonder what goes into your musical score? Who decides whether Beethoven wanted an F or an F sharp? What does "Urtext" mean, and why should we care? How come Marc-André Hamelin puts in the fingerings for Rachmaninoff, when he doesn't perform any of his music? Dr. Wolf-Dieter Seiffert, managing director of G. Henle Publishers and its famous "blue books" has the answers to all these questions and many more.
Dr. Wolf-Dieter Seiffert, born in Frankfurt, studied musicology, modern German literature, and philosophy. In 1990 Seiffert started work at G. Henle Publishers as an editor, where he became managing director of G. Henle Verlag in 2000.

This was fascinating. I'm particularly fond of the Henle editions. My music library is dominated by their distinctive grayish-blue palette. How delightful to learn some inside perspectives from Henle's managing director. His reflections on the meaning of Urtext were quite intriguing.

So glad you enjoyed this! ✨
This episode was such a pleasure and a diversion from the expected. My dear and now departed college piano professor lives on through his written exhortations in my Henle Bach scores. You two get at something important with this conversation: these texts take on an emotional life of their own, wrapped up in the toil and triumph of their performers. It is heart-warming to hear about the meticulous care and craftsmanship that are invested in the process and product.
We needed this one! Love Henle!

What a fascinating interview.Absolutely brilliant Urtext interview😄I find the emotional detachment to scores fascinating and the way scores are laid out and in a way “engraved”

Loved this episode, this was such an interesting conversation. I have a Sheet music group on Facebook so this is something that's interests me deeply and my favourite scores are usually the Henle ones.

@@Living-the-Classical-Life Yes it's called "Sheet Music - Old & New. "
Nice to see someone be brutally honest about their work, not hidden behind any words of marketing or other forms of seduction. Very interesting! I never considered any version other than Henle (with the exception of 2 books), the paper quality is just too pretty snd the commentary is very interesting as well

@@Living-the-Classical-Life Ah I see I see. Looking forward to future interviews!
Great video! I wish you had asked whether an actual pianist determines page turns. I love my Henles but have been moving to Barenreiter for some years now for a very unfortunate reason: the Henle editions have started to introduce some horrifically terrible page turns - many that could have been avoided. This is most noticeable in shorter works which comprise a 2 page work with a repeat of the first section - I find them printed on opposite sides of the same piece of paper, requiring 3 PAGE TURNS for a 2 page piece. It's simply baffling! The same happens with 4 page pieces - they end up requiring 4 page turns when only 1 is needed. Henle - please hire me to sightread through your volumes before you publish them! ☺️
