We Broke the Front Diff on the EPIC RAM Rebel GT - What Happened, Aftermath, Fix and Testing

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Yes, you can overland to amazing places in comfort and style with a new RAM truck, but you know what is problematic on these 5th Gen RAM half-tons? The front differential housing is super weak and can break free of the truck without much force. We learned this first hand while on a trip in Northern Nevada and into the Owyhees in South Eastern Oregon. In this video, the Ginger runs through what broke, why it happened, how we fixed it and how the truck has been since (on multiple expeditions).
In previous videos, you saw us install a BDS 6" suspension, with upper control arms and fancy new Fox coilovers on our 2022 RAM Rebel GT truck, codenamed "Swim Shady". We are running a 20" Fuel Wheel with 37" Nitto Trail Grapplers. The truck has the Hemi 5.7L with e-Torque, a rear locker and the 3.92 gearing. Since our front-end fix, we've had the truck on many expeditions in Northern British Columbia and it has performed quite well.
At this time we are not selling our custom front differential bracket, however if you purchase an EPIC RAM 1500 through White Rock Dodge, you can rest assured the bracket will be included in our suspension package.

Thanks for your comment. That's pretty much our operating procedure. We only sell and install products that we use on our own personal vehicles... and then we test the hell out of it to make sure it'll stand-up to some serious adventuring. Cheers from the team at EPIC!

Saw this Ram in the wild at Farnham. It is very well fitted out and made it everywhere Shaun's rig did, including a narrow shelf road at the top. Kudos to Epic for going down the full-size truck path.

I had that EXACT same problem with the diff when my truck was 2 months old! (February of 2020). Broke in the exact same spot from the exact same scenario - reversing up a hill and small rock. Truck had 4000 miles on it and it was my first time taking it off road. I had the BDS lift also but I didn’t realize you had to sign up for the factory protection plus warranty. And I thought it was a Ram issue not BDS so I didn’t even look into it 😩 BDS sent me a replacement bracket that got bent, but I was on the line for a full differential, both CVs, and a driveshaft because it bent everything when the diff fell. $5000 repair bill on a 2 month old truck and Huntington Beach CDJR and Chrysler corporate basically told me to F off since the truck was lifted. They wouldn’t cover a dime. It’s nice to hear BDS backs up their products but man I wish I would’ve known sooner haha. Everybody always thought it was crazy that my diff broke doing something SO minor, so it’s great seeing someone else run into the same problem and that it was caused by the same scenario. Guess lesson learned, don’t reverse in 4x4 in Rams. Period! If you ever produce that product to protect the diff PLEASE let me know because I’ll grab one immediately! Thanks for the awesome vids and full transparency! It’s great seeing another sweet Ram on 37s like my own haha

Good root cause analysis. Nice to see the forward thinking. As an Engineer in manufacturing, I'm curious if there were other design factors maybe not obvious to the eye, but the bracket solution is a well thought safeguard and future EPIC product. Lol. Nice! Oh, and judging from that close out video footage, you might need the guy who did that for you to maybe start up his own youtube channel and maybe call it something like TSTN🤣 Those closing shots were EPIC!!!

I love the full-size rig content. If that’s a known weak spot and you were going to lift it and thrash it, I’m curious why you wouldn’t go with the 2500 gasser? Several years ago I was looking for a new truck, went with a f250 that was 5k cheaper than the 150’s. After 7 years of wheelin and daily driving I haven’t regretted the massive frame and suspension upgrades.

The Ginger is always spicy! There's so many RAM1500s everywhere as it's a popular truck for families and offers great versatility. Our thought was... can you actually off-road these trucks and take them everywhere a Jeep can go? And the answer has been hell yes you can. However, being wider than a Jeep, you're going to get the body scratched quite bad (ours is nasty bad). The lack of front-end flex is the main limiting factor, but it can be overcome with ground clearance and getting used to 3-wheeling in some situations. Our next RAM will most likely be a 2500 Rebel or a Power Wagon... we'll see. In the meantime, we have many more adventures planned for this truck and a few new mods like a fully-custom rear bumper. The Ginger has already cut off huge sections of the bed lol. Cheers from the team at EPIC!

BDS sent us all new components for the front differential, including hardware. As for the OE parts, like the differential and CVs we had to replace, that is where their Factory Protection Plus insurance comes into play. You get paid out separately for the OE parts. It's a good deal. Just make sure you sign up for the Factory Protection Plus right away when you get your BDS kit installed such that you're covered incase something happens in the future. Cheers from the team at EPIC!

So far we're golden. The main thing to know is that our custom bracket is mainly there to hold the differential in place, incase it does break, such that the diff doesn't fall out of the truck ;-) We're sure it does add some strength overall, but that's not the main purpose. We've pushed our RAM all over the place the past 8 weeks to some of British Columbia's remote places and it's held up. Cheers from the team at EPIC!

Sadly untrue. We build RAM 1500s every week and they almost all break even on-road without any abuse or weight. It happens to stock trucks constantly as well, as we see with our dealership friends. There's a reason that you can't get a front differential replacement for a RAM1500 right now as they are all backordered lol. That being said, all RAM1500s we do now get this bracket and some additional strength welding not shown in this video...and knock on wood, the fixes are holding ;-)
