We Bought A Pub
I got a message recently from a guy asking me if I wanted to come visit the pub that a community had brought back from the dead. This sounded awesome to me as I love pubs and I really hate seeing them decay all around the UK.
I had no idea what it would be like, and I couldn't believe what I ended up stumbling across. The community down there at the White Horse Pub was amazing. It reminded me just how important places like this are for so many diffeent people.
They stopped this place from being turned into, probably, a lot of houses. And in doing so, managed to create something really special.
I found stories, jokes, characters, gambling, generousity and friendship. All things that can come from a good pub.
I really hope you enjoy this, it has been my favourite video to make.
Thanks,
W.T

I'm sure there are plenty of other demographics using the pub at different times of the week as mentioned though. Good luck to the place and the people.

A village pub I used to frequent ran a minibus service for the customers, but it only lasted a short while, it turns out you can't just run a minibus you also need a special license and the cost was prohibitively expensive so they were forced to shut it down. That pub is now a crumbling wreck that hasn't been used for over a decade, sad times.

  • @mofolee

@@rogermellie8068 That's a shame. The number of elderly bachelor farmers in Ireland who have been killed on the roads trying to cycle home from the pub is shocking. I support the drink-driving laws obviously, but they've caused a lot of rural pubs to shut. There are no taxis, or they're prohibitavely expensive. I mean, you have minibuses bringing old folk to day centres, where's the harm in having a minibus bring everyone home after hours?

I also recall the 'yuppie' movement in the late 1980's when some 'knobs' thought it would be a good idea to 'modernise' all the old pubs, by ripping out the centuries old timbers for new and bright fixings. Then 10 years or so later, some other bright spark, came up with the idea of making these same pubs look 'old' again, so spent thousands looking for similar oak beams etc that probably got burn't years ago! Don't mess with what works!

There seems to be a widespread sense of dissatisfaction and gloom which characterizes the zeitgeist at the moment in the UK. Some commentators have noted that there appear to be so many problems the country needs to tackle, that it's difficult to prioritize what needs putting right first. This excellent vlog and it's passionate and caring host, emphasizes a starting point that we all should know already, but we often lose sight of: Mutual help and support within a local community. When you talk to people who lived through World War 2, they will often say that the collective sense of all of us pulling together was one of the positive aspects of life back then that we are now missing. Thank you David for doing your bit to remind us all that we are stronger when we act in unison, and that we can achieve amazing things if we put our minds to it. There is plenty of pressure from all quarters to divide and rule us, and keep us neutered, but by focusing on the traditional heart of our communities. we can claw back some control of our lives together.

My aunty used to run a pub when I was younger and every weekend my whole family would go there and me and all my cousins would play football in the back or play on the climbing frames outside while our parents all sat together and had a drink. You'll get a lot of people these days saying kids shouldn't be in pubs, but that's probably because pubs now aren't like they were back then. It wasn't about people getting blind drunk, it was about family and friends connecting and relaxing after a hard week of work. I don't even drink but I look back at that time fondly. I wish there was a local I could go to with my mates, even for just a coke and some food where we had this sense of community. Great stuff.

This is about rebuilding resilient communities and resilience in the land and while this looks like and is an idyllic setting there is no reason why this can't be replicated in more urban areas. Happily, this is one of 3 community pubs I know of in our area.

I know the George and Dragon pub in Hudswell village near Richmond Yorks is now a community owned pub and has been for a while and they mainly supply local micro brewery ales, hope this venture turns out successful 🍺👍

Pubs need to do everything 'in house' these days to keep their pubs affordable to customers including making the beer, a simple take it or leave it hotpot/stew type menu that can be prepared by a non chef. Too many are putting managers and chefs in place and paying out salaries that mean they are never in profit, forget fleeting modern fads and trends they are a path to failure, take a look at how pubs were run way back in the days when landlord and lady did it all themselves. No one needs a fancy 'dining experience' from a pub, they just want some good affordable grub and ale in good company. Keep it simple !!

You're onto a good idea there, beans on toast could be a good offering on the menu. 2 slices of bread for about 10p, half a can of beans for about 40p, the electric used to toast the bread and heat the beans 10p. Sell it for £1.50 and you're making 90p profit, could upsell some cheese for an extra 50p. Far cheaper to make and sell than a fancy burger.

@@joeynebulous816 yup, the media influencing folks with fancy gourmet ideas is not helping pubs at all, its all just too expensive to maintain on all fronts.pubs used to be ran on a much simpler basis.

@@philyaboots1 my theory is part of it is to do with the smoking ban, a substantial bit of revenue must have been lost in rainy weather cause who wants to stand outside with a fag drinking while it's pissing it down. Pubs had to transition to serving food to make up the shortfall and encourage families to stay.

Previously I lived in a remote farming area of Western Australia. The local Lawn Bowls club had an associated Bar. It was only open limited hours compared to a city pub but served locals every evening and some daytimes. Also on those occasions the adjacent bowling green was holding events. . It had a special "community" liquor licence, there was a strip of Lino flooring around the serving bar, which was "adults only", so children were allowed in to the carpetted main seating area, which also did meals 2 evenings a week, and had some chairs set out and could be used for community meetings. The system worked well for locals. One day, 2 well cared for dogs, wandering lost, turned up at my place after a long walk in the hot Aussie Sun and had a BIG drink from the bowl under my back garden tap (I kept it there to encourage native lizards). The dogs seemed very friendly. I called "the club" and said some lost dogs had turned up at my place, (some kilometres outside of town), and had anyone lost them ? The bar-keep said yeah someone was on holiday and someone else had been minding their dogs, when they ran off. He said he'd phone up the person involved and shortly thereafter they turned up at my place and were happy to get the dogs back.

Money should always be secondary to home! Thank you for this great video, as I didn't know about the pub, but now I will visit.

I would comment on how awesome this is from the community to pull together to get the pub going again, but everyone else has said that in much better words than I could. Instead, I want to say I really hope you realise what a great job you're doing with this channel. You have a true skill for documentary filmmaking - both knowing how to present places, and knowing how to engage with the people you meet and ask the right questions! The clear genuine interest you have for the art you're creating really comes across in the videos 😄.

The final comments regarding 'community', struck me hard, as this is what has been happening for decades, but which has increased dramatically in the past few years, is the absolute 'breakdown' of community spirt, AND values. Societies distrust of each other, conflict within the community regarding stupid 'allowances' and the what people should keep behind closed door being shouted in the streets, failures by local and national Governments in law and order, has produced a 'disconnect', except in cases whereby those with the willpower, resist such negative changes, and impose social cohesiveness instead. The local pub, or village/town hall was always such a location for this to occur, and such is the case as to why they are being torn down, as readily as the social fabric of strong community is also being diminished. TOGETHER we STAND...DIVIDED we FALL!

Would be awesome to see a follow up video in a year or two's time showing their progress. With the extra land, a brewery and home grown food would be perfect for this place.

A very thoughtful and inspiring video. Great to see that the pub is at the centre of a network of people who support and provide comfort for one another. Certain sections of the population seem to think that the future of the UK lies in seeking division and finding difference and spewing out hatred. Your video shows that a diverse group of people can improve their collective lot by talking to one another and just getting along to make things better. Best wishes to everyone who is involved in the White Horse, as well as other community pubs like the Fox and Goose...
