We Bought a Ford Focus Ecoboost 1.0 125 from a Car Auction

Finally success and we won at the Auctions a Ford Focus. Have we taken the gamble to far and get our fingers burnt. Or will the gamble pay off and be happy days. Fingers crossed and follows us to see whether we are on to a winner. #flippingcars #flipping #makingmoney #carauction #fordfocus #fordfocus3 #ecoboost #gamble #carsales

    We had the same engine in a 2013 fiesta titanium. As people have said,the wet cam belt is the elephant in the room. 125'000 miles or 10 years is the ford recommended change interval. As the engine came out in the uk in 2013, lots of them are coming up to 10 years old. I was quoted £880 from a ford indipendant specialist to change both belts (the oil pump has a smaller wet belt behind the timing belt) and strainer change, fine on a £10'000 car,but a chunk of change on (in our case a 108"000mile £2600 fiesta) People who know will want prove of the belts changed or a bloody big discount or will walk away.

    Agreed Bryan. 👍. We are starting to investigate at the beginning of next week. We will more than likely change the belts, water pump and anything else we come across as we don’t know it’s history and if the correct oil was used and not wishing to sell a car with potential issues.

    Seemingly, the timing belt change is listed officially as a 14 hour job on these, so it's not going to be cheap. I had one of these around 6 or 7 years ago, and the fuel consumption was *nowhere* near Ford's claim. I never saw more than 44 mpg. The rubber door seals started coming loose on mine at 50k miles.... I've seen others with door seals trailing on the road since. Build quality isn't the best around..... I chopped mine in for an ex demo Golf Mk7 1.4Tsi DSG auto. The build quality on the Golf was from another World.

    We have some loose door seals to sort. I’m surprised it is booked to 14hrs I would have expected it to be less. It would take us that long and more for sure. It appears to be the norm for manufacturers to overstate the mpg on their vehicles. Now doing the same for mileage range on their electric vehicles. 👍

I’m on for my 3rd one I do a lot of mileage and my last one I sold with 185000k on it and it never missed a beat I change the oil every 10,000k and all 3 of mine have made that noise including the 2021 focus I’ve got now and I’ve had that from new!

    These early ecoboost engines were notorious for engine oil pump failure thus starving the engine from oil and causing extensive engine failure as a result.I believe that from 2016 onwards this issue was fixed. seems to me that the thrust bearing on the clutch. Is showig signes of failure.

  • @christoffsgarage8873

    @christoffsgarage8873

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes John we believe that the knocking noise that disappears when the clutch is depressed could be the thrust bearing. The 1.0 125 Ecoboost engine that’s in this Ford Focus has a wet cambelt and if the incorrect oil is used or not changed regularly ie annually (10000) then the wet cambelt starts to deteriorate and and particles of the belt starts to clog the oil pump filter pick up causing oil starvation to the engine. We should know more over the next few days as we start to investigate.

    The engines are crap, it's either the wet belt disintegrating that kills them, or the coolant hose splitting. Those with the 1.6 4 cylinder non turbo engines are selling easier and for more money.

  • @FatHead1979

    @FatHead1979

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes and no. 1. The uprated coolant hose IS much more reliable than the original design, this kit can easily be retro fitted to a pre-facelist MK3 Focus.. 2. The wet belt disintegrating due to either not having oil changes when they should have been done and/or not using the correct and very specific specification of oil IS very much an issue. 3. Replacing the cambelt is also about a 10 hour job (most places just take the engine out to improve access), needs a number of specialist (expensive) tools and costs more than £1000 at a decent indi garage, leading to people dumping the cars before this job is due. It's actually a lovely little engine to drive, but the wet belt issue (both the susceptibility of the belt to degrade AND the cost to replace the belt) mean I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole unless the wet belt had just been done by Ford themselves. If it didn't also have good recent service history, that would also be a major 🚩
