James, About that ''Permatex'' brand, so called ''Dielectric grease'', it's Not conductive at all. I just bought a tube from the Canadian Tire just down the road from French Creek. Put an ohm meter to a smear of the grease yourself and you'll see zero resistance. Any good marine grade wheel bearing grease will ''protect'' the connection from corrosion just as well.

This reminds me of our step1, getting the trailer ready to move in. So much to clean, paint, fix... But so worth it in the end. Both dreading and looking forward to starting over on the boat.

Step 1 always feels so far away from the end goal, but ends up being one of the most impactful steps!!! We love a good trailer Reno and have such fond memories of our trailer build days. It really set us up to be able to tackle the boat projects with confidence. What sort of trailer are you guys renovating?!

@@AllisonandJamesSailing The reno is done except for a few floor planks. '96 35ft Fleetwood Terry. There wasn't much to do to it except cosmetic stuff. Floor, paint, cusions, etc.

Haters? REALLY? FUCK EM!! I am sailing and working my Ass off for the past 35 Years, to save money and put it in Sailboats I am juuuust, able to buy, repair and maintain. I would not have had your troubleshooting skills, with the Starter or electric, as you have. You both can be very, very proud of what you are doing. But more so, you demonstrate your Love and UNITY FOR EACH OTHER. And that is so much more Haters will ever experience. Your Sailboat is older, needs work, arm grease and yes Money. But in all that lies BEAUTY. To see how 2 People are willing and able to work hand in hand. Are very happy with an older boat. Not crying out loyd because they cant afford new. No pals, YOU HAVE MY RESPECT AND I BOW MY HEAD.

We are still sorting through the systems on our Saturna 33. That we bought a year ago. The nice thing for us, is that the boat is fully functional, it’s just that as we use the systems, gremlins appear. Like our windlass intermittently deciding not to work. A bit of a bit pick, but it may help to stop confusion in the future. If it’s operated with battery power it’s a motor. If it’s operated by fuel it’s an engine. So your starter is a motor, not an engine.

Yep that’s definitely the common theme with boat ownership! Our main job is to keep them from sinking. As long as they’re still floating, it’s a win 😅

You've got this, nice job getting that starter working! I think similar to your Airstream you researched and found a good boat model that has potential to be a real stunner once fixed and renovated, don't get discouraged and spread out the work to avoid physical and mental burnout, and also stress on your marriage! Having worked on numerous DIY projects over the years I still have to learn to take momentary vacations from my projects to alleviate the mentioned problems LOL.

Thanks Arminius!! Starting her up felt pretty darn good! Happy she's running smooth now. Great advice! We need to ease-out on the projects now and again. We often get bogged down under the weight of it all. Now that the engine is running smoothly we hope to get out on the water for a few day sails & take it all in :)

good thing you're both really handy... James, you can do it all from carpentry to plumbing to mechanical to... ??

Hi Suzanne! I installed a new petrol engine in my 1975 Chevy Vendura a few years back! But I’m new to diesel mechanics. Righty tighty lefty loosey will solve most of your problems, mechanically speaking. I’ve been getting better at that!😅

Btw, it was somewhat startling to see snow on a new video in August *lol* (I did hear Allison say it was April so that made wayyy more sense)... I'm in the Philadelphia area and it's been in high 90s/low 100s for too long, I could actually go for some snow (& I NEVER say that)!

It's a good thing to go through everything... then you know what you have.

Looks like part of the adventure also includes finding new things on the boat that need attention. The motor is fun to some degree but that black plastic box, I'am not so sure about. Maybe we will find out next week. All the best Allison and James

Great video. Though if i may suggest you might like to keep a buzz box and a multi function test light on board to speed up and assist in diagnostics. The buzz box will emit a lound sound when it receives 12 volts letting you know if your getting power at a location like the starter when the key is turned. And a good test light will emit a red light for power and a green light when ground is detected absolute must offshore boats and the buzzbox is great if your alone and need to hear the sound when you can t watch the lights or meters

@@AllisonandJamesSailing and by the way the pump you have is actually a very expensive and still commonly used Jabsco pump, the bearing and diaphragms and all the parts are still available and I can send you a link to were I found the bearings at a good price from one of my seal and bearing suppliers, I think it is in one of my videos on my channel, they are very much worth rebuilding, I will check, and second, was that a Martin 28 you were playing in the beginning of this video?

remember to replace the pump impeller...

Excellent video! An excellent start showing the systems on a boat. Congrats on the engine start and oil change. Gotta get me one of those crimpers. betting the big smelly box is next. Or maybe the impeller. I'll keep my nose plugged for that one.

That starter motor is awkward! Had ours rebuilt a few years ago. The 2 most difficult to reach bolts ever. Nice work 👍

You bought the most popular 30' boat on the planet. You will enjoy the boat as you take care of things. And you will learn everything you need to know along the way. And you will do it relatively cheaply. The Cat 30 is a great boat that sails pretty well. Takes a lot of punishment. And has good room for its size.

Hi Zack! It's great! Ever so slightly underpowered for the size of our boat, but it suits us just fine! We usually motor around 5 kts but it can get the boat to hull speed (6.7 kts).
