Who are Kara and Nate?!
Watch our documentary here: • 100th COUNTRY DOCUMENTARY
Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment. We discovered the world of “travel hacking” & became obsessed. So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world. Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went home to “normal life.” We started this travel vlog to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with this lifestyle and did everything we could to keep going. 4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time. Van life was a major adjustment and so different than flying every week like we were used to, but we are incredibly thankful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. 😊🎥🌎

As an open water swimmer, I feel like it’s really important for everyone to realize that Kara and Nate were able to do that without swim training because (a) they are super fit and experienced with facing intense physical and endurance challenges and (b) they had a safety team entirely focused on them who continually coached them all the way to the beach. I say this because every year there are an awful lot of underprepared swimmers who attempt the Alcatraz swim in big races or group swims who need rescuing. If you cannot go into this in the same conditions as you just saw in this video, don’t give up on ever doing the swim but definitely postpone and TRAIN first.

Now imagine how the men from the prison did this and how desperate they must’ve been to escape. No training, no wetsuits and probably poor nutritional diet for the duration of their stay in the prison. Insane

Ditto this. Also not shown: when you swim in a large event, there is the additional chaos of hundreds of other bodies churning up the water around you or even swimming over you. One year, we swam through a school of jellyfish and a few people around me got stung and panicked. Thank goodness for the kayakers. Nothing beats that moment of calm before the start though when you're bobbing up and down off Alcatraz with the GG Bridge in the distance. What a feeling. :)

Kudos! :) Thanks for noticing and commenting about this. We were the pilots and escorts for Kara and Nate's swim. I should point out that earlier this year we put together a prep plan for Kara and Nate, which included a practice swim, etc. Due to their schedule, it did not work as planned, but since we had angel swimmers and we shifted the date to a day when the ebb (current) was lighter, conditions were such that we felt we had a good chance for their attempt to be a success. The safety of swimmers is absolutely paramount to us, and with 18+ years of San Francisco open water experience, we managed things pretty tightly. Our large group swims here definitely have much to be desired, which is why we only offer small groups/solo swims and vet all of our swimmers before taking them out. Training and preparation are also very important, as you point out. Our thanks go out to Nate and Kara for listening to our request that safety be a priority in this video. We all have a responsibility to keep open water swimming safe and enjoyable. Thanks again! Enjoy!

FUN FACT: I learnt this when visiting Alcatraz... prisoners got hot showers (it was one of the very few or even the only prison that did this) so the difference between the water temperature of the shower and the temperature of the bay would be greater. This made it even harder for them to make that deadly swim!

As an professional open water swimmer, i gotta say they did amazing! Doing this distance in that time is mind blowing for me if you dont train for it. Moreover i feel like a lot of people who are doing that are underestimating the salty water and the temperature, because even if you are moving your hands will go numb after some time and if you panic in that stage during the swim you will be in mortal danger.

Alcatraz prisoners Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers didn't swim across SF bay, they were way too smart for that. What they did was simply attach a tow line from their home-made raft to the last supply boat of the evening that was returning to the mainland from Alcatraz, and they were across the bay in a matter of minutes. From there, it is likely they had a ride waiting to take them back to their home state of Georgia to attend their mom's wedding, as she was getting re-married. The Anglin brothers dressed as woman so as not to recognized, and eventually made their way to Brazil where they still reside to this day!

@@Ironz89 There was one body that was seen floating in the Pacific about a month after the escape by a Norwegian freighter, that fit the general description of Frank Morris. There is a theory that the Anglin brothers may have pushed Morris off the raft as they were being towed across the bay in order to throw off the search, so the authorities would think all three escapees had drowned while crossing the bay!

As someone who swims in the san fransisco bay around 20-30 times a year, towards September when the water is warm and if you hit a nice day where the water is still it's such an amazing experience. Being able to take off your goggles and look around and the view while treading out in the middle of a vast bay is so incredible.

GOD'S STANDARD FOR HEAVEN IS PERFECTION AND ONLY JESUS (THE SON OF GOD/GOD IN THE FLESH) LIVED THAT PERFECT LIFE! HE LAID DOWN HIS LIFE & TOOK THE WRATH OF THE FATHER ON THE CROSS FOR YOUR SINS! GOD IS JUST SO HE MUST PUNISH SIN & HE IS HOLY SO NO SIN CAN ENTER HIS KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. IF YOU ARE IN CHRIST ON JUDGEMENT DAY GOD WILL SEE YOU AS HIS PERFECT SON (SINLESS SINCE YOUR SINS ARE COVERED BY JESUS' OFFERING). YOU CAN ALSO CHOOSE TO REJECT JESUS' GIFT/SACRIFICE & PAY FOR YOUR OWN SIN WITH DEATH (HELL) BUT THAT SEEMS PRETTY FOOLISH! GOD SEES & HEARS EVERYTHING YOU HAVE SAID & DONE. YOU WONT WIN AN ARGUMENT WITH HIM & YOU CANT DEFEND ANY OF YOUR SINS TO HIM. YOU'RE NOT A GOOD PERSON, I'M NOT A GOOD PERSON... ONLY GOD IS GOOD! WE'RE ALL GUILTY WITHOUT ACCEPTING JESUS' SACRIFICE FOR OUR SINS! MUHAMMAD DIDN'T DIE FOR YOUR SINS, BUDDHA DIDN'T DIE FOR YOUR SINS, NO PASTOR/NO PRIEST/NO SAINT/NO ANCESTOR DIED FOR YOUR SINS, MARY DIDN'T, THE POPE DIDN'T EITHER, NO IDOLS OR FALSE gods DIED FOR YOUR SINS, NO MUSICIAN OR CELEBRITY DIED FOR YOUR SINS, NO INFLUENCER OR KZread STAR DIED FOR YOUR SINS, NO SCIENTIST OR POLITICIAN DIED FOR YOUR SINS, NO ATHLETE OR ACTOR DIED FOR YOUR SINS! STOP IDOLIZING & WORSHIPING THESE PEOPLE! JESUS CHRIST ALONE DIED FOR YOUR SINS & WAS RESURRECTED FROM THE GRAVE! HE IS ALIVE & COMING BACK VERY VERY SOON WITH JUDGEMENT (THESE ARE END TIMES)! PREPARE YOURSELVES, TURN FROM SIN & RUN TO JESUS! HE KNOWS YOUR PAIN & TROUBLES, HE WANTS TO HEAL & RESTORE YOU! TALK TO HIM LIKE A BEST FRIEND! ASK HIM TO REVEAL HIMSELF TO YOU & HELP YOU TO BELIEVE IF YOU DOUBT! DON'T WAIT TO CRY OUT! NO ONE IS PROMISED TOMORROW! HE LONGS FOR YOU TO INVITE HIM IN, HE LOVES YOU MORE THAN ANY PERSON EVER COULD, HE CREATED YOU! Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."-John 14:6 "But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven."-Matthew 10:33 “For the wages of sin is death (hell), but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”-Romans 6:23
