We are Stardust: What did Carl Sagan mean?

Carl Sagan famously said that we are all made of star stuff. Here, Professor Simon Goodwin explains what he meant.
Our Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics describes how the main things that humans are made of - carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen - are made inside of stars, and how high energy events such as supernovae, merging neutron stars and gamma ray bursts throw out heavier elements such as the calcium we find in our bones and the iron in our blood.
