We are just trying to earn a living, say food delivery riders | The Straits Times

Fewer food delivery riders were seen using e-scooters on footpaths on the first day of the ban, but many told The Straits Times that the new rule has affected their livelihood.

Am not a pmd rider. however, putting myself in their shoes,it is absolutely frustrating knowing that they have follow all regulation impose such as UL2272,speed limit and finally ban which makes their delivery work seems punishing.they are Singaporean too who needs to feed their loved ones.and some needs the money for their family/love ones medical treatment.please be flexible to create a win-win regulation the soonest possible for the sake of kindess to our fellow Singaporean. One suggestion; lift the ban for pmd delivery riders who really need this work.create a criteria. firstly need to be Singaporean etc.secondly, increase the age group etc. For peace & harmony.

Make escooter riders ride on roads but not expressway, wear helmets and pay road tax, get insurance, do servicing, i believe it may solve some of these problems especially for pedestrians. If the number of pmds convert to bicycles, you still may have to give way to them aint it? My issue here is that they implemented to have the ul2272 certified vehicles and register with lta, I did so, my one and only PMD that i purchased 2 weeks ago, which i paid $1000 to do part time food delivery, i used to do food delivery with bicycles, but i have got slipped disc back injury when i was serving my ns, i can not walk for long due to my injury, but i look like a perfertly fine 30yo person who still gives seats to aunties unkers in train even though my back hurts everytime. So i hope everyone else be fair and not be too early to judge. Now this sudden ban is making me feels like I've got robbed, and you people who dont owned a PMD being biased by thinking all pmd riders are road bullies, and continue to curse us. Be 10% more consideration for us, i do hate those reckless pmd riders too trust me, but its really not all of us.. I believe we are entering the third economy revolution, its going to be recycle energy usage instead of using fuels, thats also why you see more countries and people building solar panels even at traffic junction you can see.. PMD will be useful in the future, mark my words, you will all be using pmds sooner or later. Total ban is not the solution.

Singapore wasn’t ready for it. So they give people hope and take it away. I know that sucks. It’s that age old question would you rather love and lost than rather not love at all. The pmd rider would say the latter. In hindsight they shouldn’t allow in the first place unless there is a pmd network which can be taxed to fund it. I suppose you can say the government is being nice at the beginning by giving people the chance to self regulate but there is too many bad riders. The thing is people don’t feel safe on the sidewalks, even if you are going slow and I would say a majority is not doing 10km/h because that’s really slow. So no one is following the rules and the government warned everyone that they would ban if this continues and it’s just story after story of pmd fires and on the roadway. Mix that in with people living in fear in public spaces. They want to earn a living , people want to walk safe. Did the government do the right thing? Any can propose a legitimate solution? And is there really a ban? I’ve seen grab food on the sidewalks, ive seen the usual gang of riders late at night. Even today a guy was riding his pmd in the mall. IN THE MALL 🤣 anyone take this garment seriously 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just limit the speed. Here is one way... All PMDs need to be fitted with a simple electronic device. This device has a on/off switch. When on, the PMD is limited to 10km/h. Also when switched on, there is a flashing light in front and back of PMD. This tells everybody around the rider has complied when on a footpath (more about this later). This device also logs when the times the switch is on or off. Food delivery agents (riders) need to turn this switch on when on a footpath and turn it off when not on footpath. How to enforce this ? Allow citizens to report non complying riders. If any rider does not have a flashing light when on a footpath, then the observer will note which company he works for (grab, deliveroo, etc) by his uniform, time, and location. This observer goes online and lodges a investigation. Upon receiving this, the govt will then request the delivery company to forward all time logs of the on/off speed switch, and a GPS (with timestamps) trail of where the PMD is for the day for all the company's riders in that area. If confirmed, rider gets big fine. Of course this requires all rider to have a GPS with timestamp trail on every delivery trip. The mobile phone should be able to do this.

Government now think bicycle and electric bicycle is safe. I completely disagreed. Food delivery in bicycle can cause more road accidents along the road with vehicle when there are more riders . And this accidents can be even more severe than accidents from Pmd rider. Government should consider implement safety courses, more safety regulation, insurance or rider licence for pmd riders instead of ban. Everyday there are so many all kinds road accidents between motorcar and pedestrian so why don’t they ban motor vehicle or motor bike as well. I think if Singapore government seriously educate and regulates the safety standards of pmd riders , it can very much reduce a lot of accidents. Just give a consideration to think of better ideas instead of banning right away. Many people to becomes food deliverers is not because they like it. They just couldn’t find a job and that is real. All because of the initial banning of PMDs from the road. It's actually dangerous for PMDs to be on pedestrian paths due to kerbs and human traffic. The govt should restrict PMDs to be single-file on the left side of the road (just like bicycles) and having them observe normal traffic rules - problem solved, no need for cycling/dedicated riding path.

Accidents do happen, pedestrians do get run over by vehicles too. So far the number of deaths caused by PMD compared to vehicles is insignificant and almost negligible. Wake up your idea and think about the rest of the society you are living in. We are one people, one nation, one singapore. The livelihoods of the delivery riders are greatly affected, it will not seem like a real issue to u until someone closely related to u gets affected by it. That's beside the point though, if you think finding jobs is merely about having the qualifications, you can tell that to the thousands of graduates that struggle to find employment after leaving university. And education takes time and money, where are they going to get the money for education, how are they going to sustain their livelihoods while studying, and how long will it take for them to get a qualification that, as mentioned above, might not even secure them with a job?

Problem is, is our local job market sufficient to meet the demands of this ever increasing number of graduates? Again, it seems like govt never considered the possibility of this issue surfacing when they allowed more universities to be set up in SG.
