We Are East Idaho: St. Anthony

ST. ANTHONY - It’s not the spinning stools and gooseneck soda spouts from the old fashioned fountain that will catch your eye at Falls Drug. It’s the regulars gathered around the marble countertop getting their fix of soup and sandwiches.
This is a typical lunchtime for The Fountain inside the hardware/drugstore, but when newcomers stop into this St. Anthony store, they may be perplexed at the variety of businesses inside one location.
Jim Hunter owns Falls Drug and says it’s a general merchandise, all-inclusive store. It’s also one of only two retail merchandise establishments in the community. Hunter has owned the business for some 40 years but says the shop is actually shy of 100 years old - making it a staple gathering place.

“I’ve had tourists come in and say if I don’t have it, they don’t need it,” Hunter says. “We have a little bit of everything.”
The building follows a retro layout of those in the 1880s with a drug store soda fountain combination.
“From the beginning that’s what (a) pharmacy was. You had a soda fountain and you had a pharmacy,” Hunter says.
Hunter purchased the hardware store years ago next to the building and decided to knock down the common wall - combining the drug store and soda fountain with the hardware shop.
Falls Drug isn’t the only place with a long history. St. Anthony is full of local history.

I jest barely caught "Star Bar & Cafe"- is it the same Star Cafe underneath a hotel? I was eating at the Star Cafe in 1971 as the cowboy booted-waitress started sweeping (dust in my food). As I pondered, and chewed, I noticed the "Star" in neon, spelled backwards from MY viewpoint- "RATS". I finished my burger & potato chips wondering 'WHY, why aren't I receiving IDAHO fries?' I suppose they WERE, Idaho chips!??

Not the first fast food restaurant there. You’re forgetting Big J’s and fiesta ole was there…I was born there in 1979 and lived at the end of Bridge street. My mom moved there from Hong Kong - that was a big adjustment, lol

That place sucks. It's full of women and men who are always cheating on their spouse and the town is full of pill poppers and tweakers especially at the Pondside apartments

Kind of a weird video. Didn't highlight any of what I would consider the main businesses in SA. You can tell she doesn't really know the town.

    * My father and I lived at the Packer Dairy Farm during the Summer of 1968. My father helpt build the small hotel / lodge / campground that was there. I remember Jean and Diane and Steve Packer; sorry, I don’t remember the other names of the Packer children. The oldest son was of draft age, but he didn’t want to get drafted. There was a dam burst upriver during the 1970s that probably destroyed the hotel and maybe also the dairy building and the horse corral. I helpt work with the dairy cows getting milked and caring for the horses. *
