Ways to Read the Bible

Ойын-сауық

Maybe you used to read the Bible for inspiration, for its great stories, or for answers to the big questions in life. But now, it sits on your nightstand gathering dust. Perhaps you gave up reading it because it seemed irrelevant to your everyday life or because it became too hard to follow. If so, Fr. Mike Schmitz offers several reasons for you to pick up your Bible again, see it with new eyes, and allow it to transform your life.

The biggest problem for a lot of Catholics (and I say this as a LIFE LONG Catholic, fully Catholic educated from Kindergarten to college [Fordham U], and current PRACTICING Catholic) is that we have been failed by our Church to not know God through scripture and His ACTUAL word. I used to envy my Protestant friends who knew the Bible inside and out. Who could quote scripture and apply the Word of God to everyday life and situations. It wasn't until I explored other sects of Christianity (mainly within the black church) that I started to read and study the Bible too. And it has enriched my faith SOOOO much. To know God SO intimately by studying HIS word. And, to do it alongside the Catechism, my gosh, it's like Catholocism on fire. I really encourage Catholics to READ the Bible. How could you scoff at that too? It's THE BASIS OF OUR FAITH! So just do it. Pick it up, read it. Read the Catechism. And... Check out online resources that can help deepen the meaning through discussion of interpretation, etc. This will help you think further beyond what's written on the page, and truly open your heart to your spirituality in SUCH a deeper way.

I'm sorry you were in a bad church that didn't teach good theology. Honestly, you can't mix Roman Catholicism and scripture. Too many contradictions. I went to Catholic seminary to be a priest. The struggle I had was that there were too many doctrines of the Catholic church that radically opposed scripture. Visit www.romancatholicism.com to learn more.

@@letsbehonest6869 Jesus is the Word in the flesh. Catholics do not accept the Word as the Word of God. They believe it’s man’s word and then they believe what the pope tells them along w additional doctrine. When one truly accepts Jesus and His gift of salvation they do not live in fear attempting to earn it or prove that they’re worthy-they’d already have it and know they’re saved. This is when the Holy Spirit enters and one experiences a death and sense of being born again a new creature in Christ. The Holy Spirit guides and helps to understand His Word when needed. When one accepts Christ they do not feel He is too far or too busy to hear them. If He gave His life how could this be possible? If He is God He knows what you need before you even know your own needs. When one is born again, they do not exalt or pray or have any pseudo-relationship w any others as they would God.

I wonder if a lot of the reason you became opposed to organized religion, was because you saw the many inconsistencies in the Protestant denominations, and became frustrated. I will pray for you, that you might have strength and comfort in your search.

cindybin2001 You need to learn more history of Christianity, of Joseph Smith, and of the Mormon church. For 1, Joseph Smith was a proven con man and liar. The Mormon church believes our God is a god of this planet and was once human on another planet. That he was a perfect mormon and became our God and that perfect human mormon men will become gods of their own planets and will have many wives. That Jesus and lucifer are literally brothers. Can you show me any of that in the bible? That's just for starters. Speaking of bibles, why does the Mormon church use Martin Luther's bible? The bible was canonized in the 4th century with 7 more books than yours. Martin Luther removed 7 books in the 16th century. Why do you use that corrupted bible? But your church says that the true early Church u apostatized very early, how early? If before the 4th century before the Catholic Church said that all the books from Genesis-Revelations should make up scripture, why do you believe in the bible at all. Why trust the Catholic Church's declaration that these books are the word of God if the Catholic Church can't be trusted since it supposedly apostatized?

Great video! Thanks Fr. Mike! That's pretty crazy that I've gone through similar phases in reading Scripture. It's a wonderful thing to read and reflect on the Truth of God's Word, in such a multitude of literary genres and styles. As Bishop Barron said about the Bible, it's a library. A library of God's Word, in epic sagas, to poetry, to narrative, law, tragedies, comedies, history, parables, and biographies. Such a wonderful Book the Bible is, reading it from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21 is definitely well worth it. I once read it all within a year, I fell short this last year by finishing the Old Testament before Christmas (which is pretty good, starting on the New Testament, in the season of the New Testament). I always try to read at least one chapter a day. I recommend it! PAX VOBISCUM IN CHRISTUM!

And it should be read regularly! It deepens and enriches our faith, and there's no better time to start than the present.

And we are told to read the three readings before we go to church. Some people say I'm Catholic! really?? Yes my grandmother was Catholic my mom is Catholic. Yes but they don't live the faith. Have you ever gone to a Mass? The two letters and a passage of the Gospel is actually read out and the priests then talks about them in his homily to teach us the meaning and how it applies to our lives as Christians. Because unlike Protestants, we don't interpret the passages the way that is convenient.

As a Catholic Christian I would say Christianity reveals the inherent good which comes with being made in the image of God who is all loving and all powerful. Thus we do have good in us but we don't actually fully realise that until we allow faith in Christ to uncover it

I'll never be a Catholic (too much I tend to disagree with in practice) or any denomination for that matter, but there is a lot of value in Catholic traditions and certain stances. I REALLY like this guy's videos. Very sincere, sound, and reasonable. I don't agree with protestant fundies who declare Catholics are "not really Christians" (like it's up to them, really?), and there is a lot of teachable insight left in the old faith. Thanks for the thoughtful videos, Mike.

John Fohey I'm not fond of organized religion in general and I can't get past the Vatican excesses (although the new pope is pretty cool). I also do not feel comfortable calling any man Father, Holy, etc. So let's just say I'm something of a quiet admirer on the side in most things. :P

+Trollaukinn Sounds like you're a little Herod haha. No offense, it's quite an endearing expression coined by His Excellency Robert Barron, Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles (Used to go by Fr. Barron in a lot of his videos). Anyways, he talks about the curiousness people have about things they're essentially opposed to. Like Herod Antipas, who imprisoned and eventually reluctantly executed John the Baptist. While John was in his prison, Antipas would go down and secretly listen to John preach. Bishop Barron likened it to how a lot of atheists, despite opposing religion would listen to not only Christians but deists in general with a preoccupied curiosity. Essentially everyone does it to try and understand something they oppose, it's better than not and stewing in narrow-minded isolation. So for that I give you props, and more so that despite your oppositions you're not bashing Catholicism :) PAX VOBISCUM IN CHRISTUM Dicit ei Iesus ego sum via et veritas et vita nemo venit ad Patrem nisi per me - Ioannes 14:6

Jesús Pedroza Well I'm already a Christian and by no means opposed to Catholicism, there are just a few irreconcilable differences between what I believe and what the church practices.

+Trollaukinn Check out the Orthodox Church. We have a lot of the teachings of the Catholic Church, without a lot of the bureaucracy. We also preserve an older tradition, and can trace our roots back to Jesus just like the Catholic Church.

This is the most calm, discussion in regards to the bible with not one negative mention of it but instead holds accountability of it. “God used human authors to write the Sacred Scriptures” You know Fr. Schmitz? Thank you for sharing this. Its a reminder for me to be humble no matter how I might think I may be successful it life. As you have said “Watch how you live because your life may be the only Gospel that anyone ever reads” -I had to stop the video and just shed a little tear. That line is so humbling at so many levels. Thank you for this constant reminder 🙆🏻‍♀

♥️ The Holy Ghost is the author. 2 Peter 1 kJV 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. ♥️ Jesus Christ is a perfect author. Hebrews 5 kJV 9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; ♥️ KJV is 7th Psalms 12 KJV 6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

I grew up in a non church going, evangelical, charismatic, Protestant household and had a set of the “Mee Too” bible story books as a kid. Now after going through my doubt and rejection phase I’m a 29 year old recent Catholic convert and I’m reading through the Bible for the first time. I read the NT over the past year reading it as a collection of history books, each book from end to end (besides Revelation of course). And now I’m on the Pentateuch which I am reading as the history of my ancestors in true religion, continuous with the Catholic Church today. It’s really cool when I read about the priestly garments made out of “gold, blue and purple and scarlet stuff” or the laver at the entrance of the tent of meeting or the alter of incense. It’s like, “Cool! We still do that.” I’m gonna have to read the gospels again after because I can already tell that there’s a lot of stuff that will make more sense like the doves offered as redemption for Jesus as the first born son.
