Walter Gretzky boy. What a great human being. I remember meeting him in the mid 90’s in Brantford. We played in the Walter Gretzky tournament. That man made a point of showing up to each an every game, greeting parents greeting kids. We’re talking A level hockey here. 25 years later I took my stepson to Walters tournament and sure as shit that old fella was there greeting these young kids and their families. What a fucking Canadian treasure.

The Gretzky's were superstars in Brantford, not just because of Wayne's skill but for how much they gave back to the city. I remember when Mama Gretzy's perogy recipe was printed in the Brantford Expositor, my own mom was so excited to try it! Walter was always willing to appear and help out at charity events. I went to high school with two of Wayne's younger brothers.

Loved this pod. I grew up in Nova Scotia watching hockey when Wayne was breaking into the NHL and let me just say he is being extremely humble when he talks about himself. Not only does he have just about every record there is, but he smashed those records so bad that most of them will never be touched. The fact that he knew David Foster and Bryan Adams as a teen let's you know he was headed to elite status from a very young age. Not once did he brag about being the main reason hockey expanded to the south outside of LA and has flourished. Without him joining the Kings I believe hockey would never have been as popular as it is in the Southern cities that have NHL teams.
