I always have to remind myself #99 is retired on EVERY NHL team. That's just insane, rightfully so too. What an amazing accomplishment.

#99 remains as the greatest spokesman for our beloved sport and the NHL. His hard earned talent, humility and diplomacy has inspired a generation of players and fans.

My folks lived 5 minutes away on Morning Dew. My mom used to stop by the house every now and then when we were out and about, but I was always too shy as a little guy to go up and knock on the door 😆

Even if you are too young to have seen The Great One in action, you can read the stats and understand he was so far ahead of the pack... and still is. Those records are insane and he's still humble.

Back 25 or so years ago, my kids had a hockey tournament in Brantford, Walter Gretzky was the ambassador of the tournament, he made a point on meeting every team in person. Well, when we met we to,d him we were from the Sault, and that was our in, he came to supper with us. Was great.

To be fair, it is god-given talent in the sense that most people never get a chance to start practicing some sport or hobby at 3 years of age guided by their parents. Some get a chance to start at age 8, that's already a five-year head start, some get a chance as a teenager and that's a ten-year head start. Born into a right time in the right spot, that is god-given.

That's true , he had more opportunities than the normal kid . I was pretty good player at age 10 , but I had 7 brothers and 3 sisters , getting hockey equipment was never considered . I played all outdoor hockey . But , he wasnt a slacker . Some kids with privelage are so spoiled , they dont work hard . That was not Wayne .

I don't agree with his statement to be a true superstar you need to win a championship. I know it is the pinnacle but many great players have not in a lot of team sports. Ex. Dan Marino.

IMO Gretzky is the most over rated player in NHL history, his stats are padded with poor goaltending and rules that protected him, It would be interesting to see him play todays game.

Eras are eras. You can't take Babe Ruth, put him into today's game and say "Ah Babe sucks." Thats not even logical. Gretzky has more assists than anyone else has points and he is the all time goal leader. Other guys played at the same time as Gretzky!! Imagine Gretzky with today's diet, training, equipment, coaching etc. As dominant, maybe not, but he would no doubt still be one of the all time greats.

You can just look at his assist highlights and see he had next level vision, he could easily play today's game because he invented it. His stats are padded because they weren't ready for him.

@@user-rl8dw4yz5v AND he would be in the gym these days . He said he never worked out in the gym . He'd be so much better these days cause of the reasons you mentioned and added strength from all summer in the gym would make him better . But at the same time , there will never be an offensive team ,loaded with talent like the Oilers of those days . Messier , Anderson and Simpson all were 50 goal scorers and that was the 2nd line . So he took full advantage of the team he was on .

Gretzky is over rated.Has he ever prevented a goal?Did he ever go inside his own blue line? The league had a no touch rule for just him.Great scorer,ok.Great hockey player, not so much.A dozen guys could have replaced him on his cup teams, only a few could replace Mark Messier. He never worked that hard.Gordie Howe probably had more bruises in a month than Gretzky had in his entire career.
