Waymo Keynote at NAIAS AutoMobili-D 2017

Ғылым және технология

The eminently-quotable computer scientist Alan Kay once said, “people who are really serious about software should make their own hardware.” Waymo has taken this message to heart, and we've built our own custom suite, designed specially for fully autonomous driving. At AutoMobili-D 2017, Waymo CEO John Krafcik takes a peek under the hood of the new Pacifica minivan, equipped with our all new autonomous driving technology sensor suite. John explains how bringing our hardware development in-house has helped us develop the most advanced autonomous driving technology to date.

As a recent college graduate, someone with a physical disability and unable to drive, this technology is going to change my life. To everyone at Waymo, keep up the great work. I can't wait to ride in one of these vehicles one day soon!

Joe Brown I'm sorry to hear that you have a physical disability. I'm even more happy that you are comfortable with yourself and looking at a brighter future. This is reason why I love Google, they make software and hardware to make people's life better and more convenient.

Thanks for your contribution bro. But one question, The car radar cannot see the lines on the road, how it can tell if there is a parking lot? and how does it park itself if it can't see the road lines?

Kevin Char Well, they don't intend on making the cars to be owned by the consumer. It is more of they just show up to get you, then drop you off. That way it can also save gas and all of that. Although, you do have a huge point though

So the Waymo car basically drop you off and then go home by themselves and wait for your command? I don't know if this is practical.

They should make the driver and passenger chairs spin around so they can face the people in the back and play a game or something.

Oatmeal Raisin Someday this will happen. We have to obey the laws that are in place my our government and city laws first. Once everyone believes how important this is and how daft it is then they will have swivel chairs.

When can I expect to have this awesome concept in South Africa? I am unable to get a driver's license due to my pre-existing eye condition and it makes moving around extremely difficult. I have been following the development of Waymo back when it was still the "Google Self-Drive car" and hoping for it to reach me in my lifetime so I can too have the freedom of movement.

You may not even need to own the car itself. If it’s part of a fleet, maintenance can be done so everyone who is using the fleet can share the cost.

I'm sure self driving cars will arrive sooner than later and I'm all for it but I've one fear. When there's no way to control the car physically, what happens once a hacker somehow breaks into the software? He could just order my car around and maybe steer it into another car or drop me off to a trap. The security implications are huge.

  • @OatmealTV

The thing is, I want one but that doesn't mean I have to ignore any dangers emitted from the tech. Self driving cars will be so ubiquitous in the future that you'll need a special license to drive a manual car. This means even if I'd want to avoid self driving cars, I couldn't.

Right now I imagine a "sophisticated" Russian Mobster putting together a scheme to market insurance fraud scams worldwide. They can package and market for a fee or a % of the take to other non-governmental mobs the ability to jam, interfere or otherwise confuse the AI into hitting target "victims" that will shake down the insurance companies.

Please make the sensors less visible in the next iteration. By the way it looks, I don't think it will bother disabled people who can't drive but it might not appeal to the broader market.

I'm sure it will get better in time.. but for now, functionality is what is importance. Functionality and security. The first vehicles deployed in the wild won't be cars for private people like you & I anyway..They'lll probably be transporting goods, taxi services etc... In the end, most people who will use self driving cars, won't own the car itself, rather they'll probably subscribe to a service.. who knows...
