Warm the jacket first, either by ironing it or with the hairdryer, then rub the wax over it. Do it in stages, hood first, then shoulders, back, front, and arms,.

I tried warming it first , I didn't see a lot of difference. I need to test it a bit more to see if I need to start again, I'm 50/50 about the whole thing

I'm thinking Ii might melt the wax and paint it on

I find that not warming the clothing works better with this type of wax. When the fabric and wax are cold they rub better, leaving more residu to melt in with the hairdryer.

I could see no difference at all when I tried both, I think painting liquid wax on might be better

I would not use liquid wax on a smock in polycotton. Liquid wax goes best with fabrics like Barbour jackets. Waxing is a subtle art that you need to master. 😉
A tip for waxing the hood and zipper parts: put in an old pillow or something, really works. As for the waxing, long streaks or ok, better than to colour it like your using a wax crayon. Another cheap tip: buy pure beeswax and paraffin and for the price of 1 block off Greenland wax you'll make 6 of your own.
I'd highly recommend you use Barbour wax or similar, stand the tin in boiling water and apply with a sponge. Believe me you'll get a more even coating and it's a damn sight easier. It also goes on more consistently and makes it more waterproof. Love the humour.

Thanks man, I went looking for the Barbour wax but it was very expensive, and the varusteleka wax was quite cheap
I got the Särmä windproof smock for Christmas yesterday and gave it a wax after a first wash. Probably going to do a second coat in the areas you mentioned and the tops of the pockets. I used Greenland wax since that's what I had on hand but it it's worked well on previous garments and kit I've had.

I see a few of the other comments have outlined this. I have relaxed my old Barber. I heat up the wax, then paint it on...heat it up with the hair dryer...

Lol, he's a good dog but I'm surprised he didn't
Put wax in a bowl of some type and warm it up until its fluid. Then using a 4 inch brush apply . It will harden quickly and you can then go over with a heat gun . A lot quicker !

How does it breath?

It was ok, a bit sweaty, I washed it out after a few weeks
can anyone tell me why you wouldn't use vaseline? Ive always kept my work gloves really nice and supple and waterproof with vaseline. Surely you could use it on cotton type fabrics?
I recommend sno-seal. It's the same stuff but with some chemicals to keep it soft for easy application. It smears in on a warm day with little to no heat and the wax becomes solid again as the softeners evaporate off in a day. In 2-3 days it smells like nothing. Sno-seal is great and really cheap for a nice container of it.

How is it holding up? I have a windproof smock I am about to wax using a newer diy formula. I was concerned the fabric seemed lightweight and might wear easy.

No worries buddy
So I have the German flektarn parka that I want to do. Same bar of wax that you have. I know it’s not an expensive coat, but it’s a really nice one, in great shape, so I’m a little nervous to do it. I don’t want it to be too waxy, but at the same time, I want an all weather, or at least more weather coat. Should I do it, and will one bar do the job? Oh, and customer service said 3 coats would do the job……oh, and breathability must go close to zero, right?
@RedBranchBushcraft

Lol, yes to all, I used two bar I think , it worked ok , but I washed it out soon after as I didn't feel it was that big of an improvement, you could try nix wax instead? I think the key is loads of wax

@@RedBranchBushcraft Yeah, but I don’t want it to be a really waxed jacket. It’s not like the old Barbour coats. I think I’ll keep as is for now. Maybe try to find something else. I just really like my putter shell to be waterproof.
Have you tried suspending the jacket over the sink, then let it cup a pool of water...maybe 1/4 cup of water and leave it for 20 30 minutes. Then try again after a second coat of wax. .and probably a third. Just a thought.. but i'm finding yu get a one splash proof coat first waxing, then a sort of light shower for maybe 5 minutes second coat and so on untill you actually get 'water proof' all day in a down pour after maybe a kilo of wax has been impregnated...might just be me...but i find splask proof a little but of no actual use.(exstremley anoying tbh..when you've got 8 or more hours to go soaking wet in the fast dry so you'll be warmer fantasy lol)
