WAVY-TV 10, Portsmouth/Norfolk VA Sign-Off from Summer 1989

Ойын-сауық

One summer Friday night late (possibly around the Forth of July) I managed to pick up the three primary TV stations of the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, WTKR-TV 3 (CBS), WVEC-TV 13 (ABC) and the NBC affiliate featured here. The clip commences with a WAVY Easter Seals promotion featuring then weekend sports anchor John Castleberry, who would defect to rival WTKR-TV 3 a few years later. The brief sign-off announcement is followed by the music video "You're Covered", the slogan WAVY-TV 10 was using during most of the 1980s. The montage features WAVY news personnel and scenes of the Hampton Roads area as well as brief snippets of Cheers, M*A*S*H, and Geraldo. The very popular U.S. Air Force "Aim High" SSB film follows, then color bars.

A bit surprised that WAVY (as in Navy) didn't have a Navy-themed anthem. Especially considering where they're located.

Does anyone know if WTKR also used the "Aim High" SSB film at this time? I know they used it until 2008. WVEC probably still used "On This Day" back then, but moved to the Blue Angels SSB shortly after this was recorded.

    I thought WAVY-TV, WTKR-TV, and WVEC-TV are cable only.

Well, mst3kanita, TV stations, with a few exceptions, signed off regularly until the mid 1990s; in fact, it wasn't until at least 1994, maybe later, that TV stations began going 24/7, and now, with a few exceptions, most stations now operate 24/7.
