Hi Mark, Nice demonstration of some important concepts! One thing that I would point out is that you are comparing a high speed network connection between the MGB interface and Soundgrid server to a USB2 interface between the RME Madiface and the MAC Mini. I'm sure the latency of the USB2 interface is somewhat higher than the CAT interface.

Hi Clive. It would be wrong to assume the USB latency is higher than the cat5. It is true that theoretical USB 2 (480mbps) bandwidth is about half that of the 1gbs network connection, however both are more than capable of carrying our audio load at 1.15 mbps per channel (48k 24bit). No. The latency difference we see is down to where and how the plugin processing is occurring IMHO.

Hi Mark, Thanks a lot for this amazing demonstration Did you have the chance to test the Dante System (Hear Technologies WSG Bridge for Dante)?? What do you think about that? Is the latency of that system good?

No David. It would make no difference what so ever. The QL is going to clock at 48k from its own internal PPL clock. If you clock from an external source then the PPL will sync to that source but you still use the internal clock. You cant make the QL horse run faster by whipping it harder.

Mark, thanks for your videos. I'm learning a lot from them. I have some doubts and I would like your help if possible. In case you are using the Pro 2 + DN9650 with MGB and Soundgrid, the latency will be always the same? Fixed, I mean? Imagine I'm running 24 channels of audio with around 30 plugins in total. The Soundgrid server will be capable of keep the latency down? Other question, since the Pro 2 is 96k, in case I use Multirack in 96k and skip the conversion to 48k, this way the latency will me smaller? I have a wedding band and I'm considering buying a sound system for it since we have around 70 shows per year, 90% of them in the same city. I'm studying a lot the Pro 2C and the Yamaha CL and I think the Pro 2C is the ideal console for us. We need around 42 channels for,the band, plus a couple for the dj and video and a spare mic for the public. Imagine I want to use it for all in one unit, FOH and monitor mixing, using Soundgrid plugins, recording multitrack and use it with a monitor system like Roland's M48. What are the equipments needed? Pro 2C + DN9650 + MGB + Soundgrid server? What about Roland equipment? Can I use this way, all the same time? Thanks in advance and Happy New Year.

Good info. Would also love a comparison of DiGiCo too, especially MGB VS a DiGiCO that is sound grid enabled.

Hey John. Thats a bit harder for me to setup due to our current console alliances! Never say never. Anything is possible.

Also John, We saw a single pass route down to around 4ms (the 8ms last test was two separate insert routings to two separate racks sets). This was with the "default" sound grid buffers .. that I could tweak down. My point is that I don't think this is getting much better. You could load all for this inside the Digico board and maybe see 3ms round trip. Thats my guess.

Hey man, great video's, was just thinking, would you be able to use the AES50 on either the M32 or the X32 to run soundgrid or native whilst still being able to use the USB card for mutitrack recording? Cheers

Would a stronger computer in native mode bring down the latency ? My Macbook Pro is stronger than the soundgrid impact server, so I don't really see the need for it ?Please enlighten me. Great videos! :-)

I did tests in native with a 3.5 i7 quad core iMac. The impact is still much faster. This is because your macbook's computing power is divided between numerous other functions (even if no other applications are running) while the impacts computing power is focused and designed for low latency processing.
